Chapter 4 - Evidence Gathering

The room is cold, much colder than the other rooms. It's basically a large drawing room, complete with a sofa, armchair, small desk, and bookshelves. Several pens and bookmarks and papers are already scattered about the floor, having fallen off or been tossed about. Amongst the furniture, wooden crates and cardboard boxes are settled, as though the person wanted the space but also the storage, and decided to just shove everything under the rug.

In one case, quite literally.

"Uh, I already saw something," Sparky says immediately, pointing to a corner. "It looked like a ghost but in high contrast?"

Tussle sighs. He knows what that is.

"If it doesn't look realistic, aka like a person or monster or something, and seems almost featureless, that would be the apparition evidence. Mark it off. We narrowed our ghosts a little."

Unfortunately, some of the worst are still on the list.

He gestures at Thrasher and Snow, who both start their work. The sensors and cameras are set up in prime locations, which makes Tussle want to give the kid a pat on the back. He doesn't, because boundaries and all that, but the kid took initiative to grab some cameras and even knows how to optimize layout.

What was this kid's job? Was he a cameraman? Maybe a security officer or something. Those guys always have absurd awareness when they like their jobs.

Thrasher, meanwhile, has started walking around the room, talking into the spirit box. The kid is practically chanting the same question, "Are you here?", which is good.

And, just like Snow, the kid is smart enough to rush over towards where a pen was thrown from, asking the question directly atop the spot. When that doesn't receive anything after a few more repetitions, he glances at Tussle.

"Yeah, cross out spirit box. It was there, it just doesn't answer that. Keep your camera out, we're here to get evidence as well as find the ghost out. Sparky, how's the thermo looking?"

"Uh..." She moves to better lighting, which prompts Snow to take out a flashlight for her, aiming it at the device in her hand. "Thanks, it, uh, seems pretty close to freezing. I think that it keeps fluctuating because of how big the room is, but it just has to touch below freezing, right?"

"Correct, keep walking around, just like Thrasher did. If it is in a space, that space is colder. Snow, go to the van and keep an eye on the monitors. If the blue light on the audio section pops up, that means EVP, got it?"

"On it!" The kid is gone before the words finish. The sound of him pounding down the stairs say he's very much rushing and very much in danger of falling over if he trips. Tussle sighs at that. He's been sighing a lot more than usual, but who can blame him? He has interns.

He's not meant to have a pet, let alone be around children. Which idiot in management wanted to help him 'mellow out' with interns?

"Freezing!"

"Alright, check freezing temps," Tussle puts into the radio, watching as the two remaining newbies quickly change their handhelds to the chest, perfectly in line with his own positioning of his one.

[You said bluelight?] Snow's voice crackles back.

"Yeah, blue means EVP. Sparky's about to come back, don't startle yourself into a heart attack." As he says this, he gestures to the EMF. It gets handed over, and he makes a cross with his hands, sending her off in record time.

One good thing is they chose decently sensible interns to send him.

Another pen launches again, this time practically aiming for Tussle. He gives it a crude gesture. Yeah, yeah, he knows it's there, and he doesn't care for it.

Apparition and freezing temps means either ghoul or onryo. Both aren't exactly nice folks.

A flash comes through, and suddenly there's an image being turned towards his face. He looks, squinting at the little screen. Thrasher's skills are good. He caught the ghost on its best angle...

Well, if a ghoul can have one.

"Okay, see this?" He points at the teeth, nasty little things. They're sharp and rotted and horrible to look at. The rest of the ghost's manifestation is just a normal person.

"The teeth?"

"Yeah, that means that it's a ghoul. They always look precisely like normal people except for those ivories. Ghouls are eaters, cannibals. Well, cannibals alive, still got the taste now. Teeth built to eat meat, and they don't care about how much those teeth rot away just as long as they get a bite. You saw it thr-"

A book thumps into Thrasher's side, though thankfully flat side first, meaning it just falls uselessly to the ground.

The kid looks up, and if he was any less composed, he'd have immediately collapsed into chattering teeth and fetal positions. His eyes are terrified, even as he tries for casual.

"I'll grab some of those smudges, yeah?"
