Chapter 8 - THE JEALOUSY IGNITES

MIRA POV

Mira watched the newspaper articles multiply and felt something dark bloom in her chest.

She had exposed him. She had brought Kael Vex into the light after seven years of hiding. She had told people his name and his story and his location. She had expected him to be arrested immediately or to disappear into the wilderness like the ghost he was supposed to be.

Instead, he had become more legendary.

The Crimson Tavern was packed every night. Adventurers who had never visited before now came specifically to see him. They came to drink in the same space as the Shadow Knight. They came to hear stories about the warrior who had destroyed a kingdom. They came because scandal made legend irresistible.

And Iris had become famous with him.

Mira sat in her apartment and read the articles over and over. The journalists called her brave for her hospitality. They called her strong for standing by him. They called her a hero for choosing kindness over judgment. The Crimson Tavern had become the most talked about establishment in the Adventurer District.

Because of Iris.

Because that tavern keeper had done nothing but pour whiskey and suddenly she was legendary.

Mira's hands clenched into fists.

She had loved Kael for two years. Two years of trying to build something with him. Two years of hoping that her strength and beauty and power would be enough to make him want her. Two years of being invisible to him because he was broken and preferred to be alone.

And then Iris had appeared.

Ordinary Iris. Tavern keeper Iris. A woman who had done nothing but serve him whiskey without judgment and suddenly he was looking at her like she was the most valuable thing in the world.

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't right.

Mira dressed in her golden armor the next evening and walked to the tavern. She needed to see it. Needed to see for herself how Iris had stolen what should have been hers.

The tavern was packed. Adventurers were laughing. Drinking. Watching Kael sit in his corner table like he was a piece of art they could admire. And Iris moved through the crowd like she belonged in the spotlight, basking in the attention that came from being near him.

Mira watched as Iris brought Kael his whiskey. She watched as their hands almost touched. She watched as Iris smiled at him like he was the only person who mattered.

Rage burned through Mira's chest so hot it felt like fire.

She left the tavern and found a quiet corner in the street. She began to talk to people. Other adventurers. Merchants. Anyone who would listen.

"Did you hear about the tavern keeper?" Mira said to a group of gold-rank fighters. "She's using the Shadow Knight for fame. She knew exactly who he was and she's been exploiting his legend to make her tavern famous."

"That's an interesting theory," one of them said. "But what's your evidence?"

"She could have turned him in," Mira continued, ignoring the question. "She could have contacted the Council immediately. Instead, she let him sit in her tavern for weeks. She let his presence make her famous. She seduced him to keep him there."

The words spread like poison through water.

By the next evening, people were whispering. By the following day, the rumors had taken on weight. People started to question whether Iris's kindness was genuine or calculated. Whether she had known who Kael was from the beginning. Whether she was manipulating him for profit.

Mira fed those rumors carefully.

She had conversations with merchants about how suspicious it was that the tavern's business had doubled overnight. She mentioned to journalists how convenient it was that Iris had become famous at exactly the moment Kael arrived. She told anyone who listened that she had warned them about Iris's character before the scandal broke.

The lies tasted like power.

But it wasn't enough.

Kael still looked at Iris like she was the only person in the world. Iris still served him whiskey with tenderness. The tavern was still packed. The scandal hadn't destroyed them. It had strengthened them.

Mira knew she needed to do something more.

She had connections. Information. She knew people who knew people. And she knew that Lord Commander Aldric Hayes had been searching for Kael for seven years. Hayes had resources. Hayes had authority. Hayes could do what she couldn't.

Mira went to find him.

The Adventurer's Council building was tall and imposing, filled with people who made decisions that affected the entire city. Mira had been there before for official business. She knew the layout. She knew where Hayes's office was.

She found him alone, reviewing documents.

Hayes looked up when she entered. He was older, with cold eyes and a military bearing. He studied her carefully.

"Mira Cross," he said. "This is unexpected."

"I have information," Mira said. She stepped inside and closed the door. "About Kael Vex. About where he is. About his routine."

Hayes set down his pen slowly. Interest flickered across his face.

"Go on," he said.

"He goes to The Crimson Tavern every night around midnight," Mira said. "He sits in the corner table that faces the door. He drinks whiskey neat. He's there alone, just sitting, until the tavern closes. He's vulnerable there. He's exposed."

"Why are you telling me this?" Hayes asked.

Mira wanted to say that she had evidence of conspiracy. That Iris was helping him hide. That she was protecting a fugitive. But the truth was simpler and uglier than that.

"Because I want her destroyed," Mira said. "She seduced him. She's using him. And I want him to see that she was never good. I want him to understand what she really is."

Hayes smiled. It was a cold smile. A predator's smile.

"I see," he said. "So this is about a woman."

Mira's face burned but she didn't deny it.

"That's fine," Hayes said. He leaned back in his chair. "I have my own reasons for wanting Kael Vex arrested. My son died because of him. Because of that explosion in the eastern kingdom. If you want the tavern keeper destroyed, well, arresting her for conspiracy might accomplish that."

"What about Kael?" Mira asked.

"Kael will face justice," Hayes said. "One way or another, that man will pay for what he did."

Mira should have felt satisfied. She should have felt like she was finally going to get what she wanted. But instead, she felt something cold settle in her stomach.

Hayes wasn't just going to arrest Iris. He was going to arrest both of them. He was going to destroy Kael too.

She had wanted Iris destroyed. She hadn't wanted Kael destroyed. She had wanted him to see that Iris wasn't good so that he would come back to her. She had wanted him to need her.

But Hayes didn't care about her fantasy. He just wanted revenge.

"Tell me everything," Hayes said. "Every detail about his routine. Every location he visits. Every moment he's unguarded. Give me what I need and I'll take care of both of them."

Mira opened her mouth to stop. To take back the information she had given him. To walk away from this.

But then she remembered Kael's face when he looked at Iris. That soft expression. That tenderness. That complete and total devotion to someone else.

She gave Hayes all the information he asked for.

She told him about the corner table. About midnight arrivals. About how Kael always faced the door. About the time the tavern closed. About where Iris lived. About the back room where they sometimes sat together.

She gave him a complete picture of their vulnerabilities.

When she left Hayes's office, Mira felt hollowed out. She had done it. She had set something in motion that couldn't be stopped. She had given the Lord Commander of the Adventurer's Council everything he needed to destroy them both.

She thought that would feel good.

But it didn't.

That night, Mira went back to the tavern. She sat at a table near the door and watched Iris serve Kael his whiskey. She watched as they stood together for a moment, not touching but clearly wanting to. She watched as Iris laughed at something he said.

They looked happy.

They looked like two people who had found something worth living for.

Mira had destroyed that. Not yet, but soon. In days, maybe hours, the City Watch would come with warrants and arrests. In days, maybe hours, everything they had built would collapse.

She had done that.

And Iris would hate Kael for bringing danger to her tavern. And Kael would hate himself for destroying her. And they would separate. And Mira would be alone with her victory.

A thought suddenly occurred to Mira, clear and terrible.

What if she was wrong?

What if Iris wasn't manipulating him? What if she genuinely loved him? What if her kindness was real and Mira had just destroyed the only good thing in that warrior's broken life?

What if Mira had made herself a villain?

Before she could process that thought, Iris looked up from the bar.

She made direct eye contact with Mira across the tavern. Her expression shifted from joy to realization to something darker. Iris saw something in Mira's face that made her understand. Made her realize what had happened.

Iris's hand reached toward Kael.

And Mira realized that she had already set events in motion that couldn't be stopped. The warrants were being prepared. Hayes was planning the arrest. The machinery of justice was turning.

There was no taking it back now.
