Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Tracing Shadows

The city streets were quieter than usual, but Daniel couldn't shake the feeling of being followed. Every glance over his shoulder made him flinch. Mara moved beside him, calm but alert, her eyes scanning every alley and parked car.

"We have to start somewhere," Mara said, tapping the folder in her bag. "The people we saw at the estate—they're not the top. But they're part of the web. If we follow them, we might find cracks."

Daniel nodded, tension tightening his chest. They began with names from the deal—intermediaries who handled children, shipments, and information.

Each lead took them deeper into the network's veins: abandoned warehouses, remote docks, back roads where no one else would travel.

At one warehouse, Daniel noticed faint tire tracks leading away from a docked cargo truck. Mara crouched beside him, tracing them with her fingers. "Someone left in a hurry," she said. "Or someone is already watching us."

They entered the warehouse cautiously. Dust and rust filled the air. Faint voices echoed from the shadows. As they approached, Daniel froze. Two masked figures were unloading crates. He held his breath. They were discussing something in hushed tones—numbers, names, schedules. Occasionally, they looked around nervously, as if expecting interference.

Mara whispered, "We're close. Too close."

A crate slipped, clattering to the floor. The masked figures stiffened. Daniel's heart raced. They were too visible now. They had been noticed, even if the network didn't know who was watching.

Suddenly, a gunshot cracked through the silence. One of the masked figures fell. Chaos erupted. Daniel and Mara ducked behind a stack of crates as bullets tore through the air. Adrenaline surged. They moved quickly, silently, as shadows shifted around them.

When the dust settled, they counted the bodies. One intermediary was gone, the other two had fled into the night. Daniel picked up a small notebook the fallen figure had dropped. It was full of coded entries, contacts, and locations. Every line hinted at deeper layers of the network, but nothing yet pointed to the mastermind.

Mara looked at him, grim. "They know someone is tracing them now. From here on… it's going to get dangerous. They won't let anyone meddle without consequences."

Daniel's jaw tightened. His family, Emily, Mara—everyone was in the crosshairs now.

The web was closing in. And the closer they got, the more they would be hunted.

Outside, the night wind carried the distant sound of sirens and dogs barking. Somewhere, the network was already moving.

And Daniel understood, with chilling clarity, that the game had changed.
