Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – The Woman Who Changed

The Zhao family mansion lay submerged in silence that night, heavy and suffocating.

Lina Zhao stood alone in the garden.

The moonlight fell softly across the white marble fountain, casting pale silver reflections across the rippling water.

The air carried the faint, sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine, but it did little to mask the tension hanging over the estate.

Three days had passed since she visited Lu Corporation Tower.

Three days since she signed the contract with Adrian Lu.

And three days since she refused Victor Han's engagement fitting invitation.

The world was starting to react.

Her phone had been ringing continuously throughout the day.

Family members.

Business board members.

Melissa Zhao.

But Lina ignored all of them.

She let them ring.

Let them worry.

Because she was waiting.

Waiting for the moment when her enemies would realize something was wrong.

Waiting for the trap to spring.

Footsteps sounded behind her on the gravel path.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"Miss Zhao."

It was the house butler. His voice was tight.

"Yes?" Lina did not turn around. She kept her eyes on the water.

"The Han family sent another invitation."

Lina remained still.

"What is it this time?"

"The engagement ceremony preparation meeting."

The butler hesitated slightly, clutching the envelope harder.

"Mr. Victor Han said… if you refuse again, he will personally visit the Zhao mansion."

Silence.

Only the sound of fountain water flowing broke the stillness.

Lina smiled faintly.

The expression did not reach her eyes.

"Let him come."

The butler bowed quickly and left, relieved to escape the chilling air around her.

Lina closed her eyes briefly.

Victor was starting to feel pressure.

Good.

That was exactly what she wanted.

Pressure made people careless.

Careless people made mistakes.

***

Across the city.

Han Corporation Headquarters.

Victor Han stood beside the large glass window of his office, looking out over the skyline.

His assistant stood behind him, speaking carefully.

"Sir, Miss Zhao has rejected three engagement preparation meetings."

Victor did not move.

"Continue."

"She also visited Lu Corporation Tower."

The air inside the room suddenly felt heavier.

The ambient hum of the air conditioning seemed to fade.

Victor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Adrian Lu?"

"Yes, sir."

Victor's fingers slowly tightened against the windowsill.

For a moment, silence filled the office.

Then Victor smiled.

But it was not a warm smile.

It was the smile of a predator who saw prey walking willingly into a trap.

"She is rebelling," Victor said quietly.

"Let her rebel."

"People who gain sudden confidence usually make mistakes."

"And mistakes… are fatal."

***

The next morning.

Zhao Mansion.

Luxury black cars stopped outside the entrance, engines idling low before cutting off.

Servants hurried nervously through the halls.

Because they recognized the car.

The Han family.

Victor Han himself had arrived.

Lina stood at the top of the staircase when the main door opened.

Victor walked inside.

Tall.

Elegant.

Cold.

Like someone who belonged to the upper world of power, where rules did not apply to him.

Behind him were two bodyguards, hands ready near their jackets.

Victor's gaze immediately locked onto Lina.

Something subtle changed in his expression.

Because Lina was different.

She was wearing a simple white dress.

No expensive jewelry.

No engagement symbol.

Her long hair fell naturally across her shoulders.

Calm.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

Victor spoke first. His voice echoed in the grand foyer.

"You refused my invitations."

Lina nodded.

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Servants did not dare move. The air was thick with unspoken violence.

Victor studied her face carefully.

Something was wrong.

The woman standing in front of him was still Lina Zhao.

But something inside her eyes had changed.

It was like…

Someone who had already died once.

Someone who had nothing left to lose.

Victor stepped closer, ascending the first few steps.

"You are angry."

"No."

"Then why are you acting like this?"

Lina smiled faintly.

"Because I don't want to marry you."

The words were simple.

But they struck like ice water.

Melissa Zhao suddenly spoke from behind Victor, stepping forward.

"Cousin, don't be childish."

Lina glanced at her.

The gaze was cold.

Sharp.

Melissa felt something strange tighten in her chest.

Fear.

She took a half-step back instinctively.

Victor frowned slightly.

"Do you understand the consequences if you break the engagement?"

"Yes."

"Your family business will suffer."

"Yes."

"Your father's reputation will be questioned."

"Yes."

Victor narrowed his eyes.

"Then why?"

Lina answered calmly.

"Because I don't love you."

Silence.

The servants felt tension pressing inside their chests, making it hard to breathe.

Victor suddenly smiled.

But the smile was colder than before.

"You think you can survive without Han Corporation?"

Lina tilted her head slightly.

"Why not?"

Victor stared at her.

Something inside him felt uncomfortable.

Like a plan he could not see.

Like a variable he hadn't accounted for.

Then Victor said quietly:

"You changed."

Lina did not answer.

Because she knew.

Victor was starting to feel it.

The fear of losing control.

Victor stepped closer.

He lowered his voice, so only she could hear.

"Did someone influence you?"

Lina smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Victor's eyes darkened.

"Adrian Lu?"

The name was spoken slowly.

Like poison.

Lina did not confirm.

But she did not deny it either.

Victor suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist.

The movement was fast.

Strong.

His fingers dug into her skin.

But Lina did not struggle.

She did not flinch.

She only looked at him.

Calm.

Cold.

Like looking at a stranger.

Like looking at a corpse.

Victor's voice dropped lower.

"Do you know what you are doing?"

"Yes."

"You are choosing war."

Lina smiled.

"Victor."

Her voice was very soft.

"This war started three years ago."

Something inside Victor's expression changed slightly.

A flicker of confusion.

But before he could speak—

A servant rushed inside, breathless.

"Sir! There is a message from Lu Corporation!"

Victor released Lina's wrist slowly.

He took the envelope.

Opened it.

Inside was a single line typed on heavy stock paper.

Stop touching what belongs to me.

No signature.

But Victor knew who sent it.

Victor's face darkened.

Then he suddenly laughed softly.

The sound was dry.

"So this is it."

He looked at Lina.

"Adrian Lu is protecting you."

Lina said nothing.

But inside her chest…

Something moved strangely.

A ripple of uncertainty.

Victor placed the paper back inside the envelope.

"Very well."

"If you want war…"

He smiled.

"I will show you what real power looks like."

Then he turned and walked away.

The bodyguards followed.

The heavy door slammed shut behind them.

***

That night.

Lu Corporation Tower.

Adrian Lu stood alone beside the window.

The city lights blurred below him.

His assistant spoke behind him.

"Sir, the message has been delivered."

Adrian nodded.

After a long silence, he said one sentence.

"Victor will move soon."

"Yes, sir."

Adrian's eyes were dark.

Reflecting the skyline.

"And when he does…"

He paused.

"Protect her."

The assistant bowed.

"Yes, sir."

***

Far away, inside her bedroom.

Lina Zhao looked at the night sky.

She didn't know why.

But she felt something strange inside her heart.

Like danger.

And something else…

That she could not name.

A warmth amidst the cold.

A promise amidst the threat.

She touched her wrist where Victor had grabbed her.

The skin was bruised.

But she was alive.

And for the first time in three years…

She was not alone.
