Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: The Void Mother

The name echoed through the ruined arena: the Void Mother. No one recognised it. Not the Elders, not Magnus, not Kaiden, and not even Lucien. Yet the reaction from the ancient beings told us everything we needed to know.

The First Alpha looked devastated. Aether had gone completely pale. Nyra's hands were trembling. Three legends. Three beings powerful enough to shake kingdoms. And all three of them were afraid.

The darkness inside the abyss moved not like smoke, not like shadow, but like something alive. Something watching. The temperature kept dropping until frost spread across the shattered floor. Every instinct inside me screamed to run, but my feet refused to move.

The voice came again. Soft. Gentle. Almost loving.

"My children."

The chained creature beneath the arena began sobbing. Please don't come out, it begged, its massive body trembling violently.

"Please."

The First Alpha stepped toward the abyss, his golden eyes burning with determination. You will not escape again.

The darkness laughed not cruelly, not in anger, but sadly.

Still protecting them after all this time? It whispered.

Aether joined his father. So long as we exist.

Nyra moved to stand beside them. And we still exist.

For one brief moment, I saw the truth of it. Not enemies. Not broken legends. A family, standing together again.

The Void Mother's voice softened. "

Eight hundred years, eight hundred years alone.

Something about those words made my heart ache. Because beneath the terror, there was loneliness.

The First Alpha's expression became pained. You brought this upon yourself.

Silence.

Then the darkness whispered, Did I?

Suddenly, memories flashed through my mind. Not mine. Not the First Luna's. Someone else's entirely. I saw a woman with silver-black hair, gentle eyes, and a warm laugh. She held the First Alpha's hand while Aether sat beside her as a child. Nyra laughed nearby.

And little Aria the First Luna ran through a field of flowers, happy, safe, and loved.

Then everything changed. Darkness. War. Screaming. And that same woman, crying alone.

I gasped and nearly collapsed. Kaiden caught me.

"Selene!"

His voice sounded distant, because the answer had already formed in my mind before anyone could speak. The Void Mother was not a monster. She had once been their family.

I lifted my head slowly and whispered, She was your mate.

The entire arena froze.

The First Alpha closed his eyes. Pain crossed his face. Aether lowered his head. Nyra began to cry again. The darkness went silent.

Then the voice whispered, Someone finally remembers.

My heart pounded. No, the First Alpha said, his voice shaking. Don't listen to her.

But I had seen it. Felt it. The loneliness, the grief, and the love.

You loved her, I said softly.

His golden eyes filled with sorrow. More than life itself. The darkness trembled not with rage, but with emotion.

And he killed me, the voice said.

Shock exploded through the arena.

What? Magnus breathed.

"No!"

The First Alpha roared. I sealed you!

After destroying me!

Dark energy burst from the abyss. The entire mountain shook. Cracks spread across the sky itself. The blood moon darkened.

And then the First Luna's voice returned inside my mind, urgent, desperate.

Stop them!

Tears filled my eyes.

How?

Because the truth is incomplete.

The vision shifted. I saw the woman again, the Void Mother, crying in the First Alpha's arms. And then she kissed his forehead, smiled, and walked willingly into the darkness.

My breath stopped. She had chosen it. Just as the First Luna had chosen her own sacrifice. History had lied again.

But before I could speak, the abyss exploded. A massive hand made entirely of living darkness reached out from below. The Void Mother was climbing out.

The mountain trembled. Stone crumbled into the abyss as the enormous hand gripped the broken earth. Everyone is prepared to fight. Kaiden stepped in front of me.

Magnus moved beside him. Lucien and Orion took defensive positions. Even Ragnar, despite his injuries, stood ready.

But the First Alpha didn't move. Neither did Aether. Neither did Nyra. Because they knew something the rest of us didn't.

The giant hand dissolved. The darkness shrank and compressed, then slowly changed shape. And from the abyss, a woman emerged.

Not a monster. Not a beast. A woman.

She looked no older than thirty. Long silver-black hair fell down her back. Her eyes held a universe of darkness within them, yet they carried a deep, ancient sadness.

She wore a simple black dress that moved like living shadows. And she was beautiful, not frighteningly or unnaturally, but in a way that made my chest ache.

The Void Mother looked around the ruined arena. Her eyes found Aether first.

"My son."

Aether froze. Eight hundred years of grief broke open across his face. Mother." His voice cracked.

Nyra burst into tears. Mother!

The woman smiled softly. My sweet daughter.

Nyra didn't hesitate. Not as a warrior, not as a legend, but as a daughter, she ran forward and threw herself into the Void Mother's arms, sobbing. And the Void Mother held her gently, the way a mother holds a child who has been lost for too long.

I'm here, she whispered. I'm here.

Tears filled my own eyes. After everything. After centuries of hatred and pain, this family had finally found each other again.

Then her gaze shifted to the First Alpha.

Complete silence fell between them. Neither moved. Neither spoke. Eight hundred years of separation stood between them like a wall.

Finally, the Void Mother smiled sadly. You grew old.

The First Alpha let out a broken laugh. Not nearly enough. His voice shook. "Lyria."

So that was her name. Lyria. The Void Mother. The woman history had forgotten.

Her eyes softened. You remembered.

I never forgot.

The pain in those words made the entire arena feel sacred.

Lyria stepped closer. The First Alpha looked like a man witnessing a miracle.

You should hate me, he whispered.

She raised one hand and gently touched his face. No.

Tears rolled down his cheeks. For the first time, the First Alpha cried not from fear, not from pain, but because the woman he had mourned for centuries was standing before him.

Then Lyria turned toward me, and the mark on my skin exploded with warmth. Not pain. Warmth.

She smiled. So you're the one she chose.

Who? I asked.

Aria.

The First Luna. My breath caught. She chose me?

Lyria nodded. She protected your soul long before you were born.

The First Alpha frowned. What do you mean?

But before Lyria could answer, the blood moon cracked. Actually cracked. Everyone looked up in horror as a massive black fracture split across the crimson moon. Lyria's expression changed instantly.

"No."

Aether stepped beside her. What is it?

Her answer froze the room.

He found us.

Magnus narrowed his eyes. Who?

Lyria looked toward the heavens, and for the first time since awakening, the Void Mother looked genuinely terrified.

The Devourer.

The sky exploded. Something enormous opened its eyes beyond the broken moon.

The sky didn't just darken, it shattered. The blood-red moon split apart like broken glass, and black cracks spread across the heavens. Everyone stared upward in horror.

Then two enormous eyes opened beyond the fractured moon. Ancient. Endless. Hungry. The eyes alone were larger than mountains, and they were looking directly at us.

A terrible pressure pressed down on the world. Warriors outside collapsed to the ground. Corrupted beasts whimpered and hid. Even the earth seemed to tremble in fear.

Lyria had gone completely pale. "No."

The First Alpha immediately moved to her side. What has it done?

Lyria couldn't look away from the sky. It followed the fracture.

Magnus frowned. Can someone explain what that thing actually is?

Silence. Then Aether answered quietly: The end.

Nobody liked that answer.

Orion rubbed his forehead. Wonderful. We went from pack politics to cosmic catastrophe.

For once, no one argued with him.

Nyra stepped beside her mother. This is impossible.

Lyria shook her head. Nothing is impossible anymore. Her dark eyes moved toward me, and I suddenly understood the fear in them. It wasn't for herself. It was for me.

Why are you looking at me like that? I asked quietly.

Lyria's expression became sorrowful. Because Aria's final wish involved you.

My heart skipped. The First Luna?

Lyria nodded. Before she sacrificed herself, she saw fragments of the future.

Kaiden stepped closer immediately. What future?

Lyria looked toward the broken sky. The future where the Devourer returned.

The arena fell completely silent.

Lucien crossed his arms. And let me guess, Selene is somehow involved.

Very involved, Lyria whispered.

I really didn't like the sound of that.

The giant eyes beyond the moon blinked just once. The shockwave from that single movement sent cracks racing across the mountains.

The Devourer had noticed us. No. It had noticed me.

My mark suddenly burned with unbearable heat. I cried out and dropped to one knee. Kaiden caught me instantly, and the moment his hand touched me, the pain eased slightly. His eyes widened; he had felt it too.

Lyria noticed. So did Aether. So did the First Alpha, who studied Kaiden carefully.

Interesting, the old Alpha murmured.

Magnus narrowed his eyes.

What?

The bond, the First Alpha said.

Kaiden stiffened. What about it?

Lyria's expression changed slowly to real surprise, the kind that doesn't come easily to ancient beings.

Aria she whispered. You truly planned everything.

Confusion spread through the room. I looked between them desperately. Can someone please explain what's happening?

Lyria looked at me, then at Kaiden, and spoke quietly.

The First Luna knew she couldn't stop the Devourer forever, so she created a backup plan.

My blood ran cold. What plan?

"She chose the bloodline that would one day produce her successor, Lyria said. And she chose the Alpha bloodline that would protect that successor.

Kaiden froze. I froze. The First Alpha's eyes widened slightly. Aether looked genuinely shocked. Nyra covered her mouth. Lucien blinked. Magnus slowly turned toward Kaiden.

No way, Magnus breathed.

Lyria nodded gently. Selene's bloodline and Kaiden's bloodline were linked long before either of them was born.

The world stopped.

The rejection. The bond. The impossible connection between us that had never made sense. All of it had begun centuries ago.

Then the giant eyes beyond the moon narrowed.

And for the first time, the Devourer spoke. Its voice rolled across the entire world like thunder. found you, Little Star.

Somehow, I knew it wasn't speaking to Lyria.

It was speaking to me.
