Chapter 23 - Struggle

Solaris felt a large sting of pain shoot through his stomach, his feet left the ground, and his body went flying upwards.

The frigid air left his lungs as she shot upwards into the sky; all he felt was pain throughout his entire body. If his stomach hadn't been empty, then he would have certainly thrown up.

Damn it, I don't have time for this. I need to eat.

flying through the air, Solaris began racking his brain for a way to stop moving. The force of the strike was immense and hurt like hell, but the worst part was that he was still moving without any signs of slowing.

Soon, an idea formulated in his head. He had no idea if it would work, but he didn't have an option; the demon had already left the ground in pursuit, its massive wings flapping, and its body shot upwards towards Solaris.

Seeing the approaching threat, Solaris began to move his body so that he was angled and was looking at the ground, then he sent out four shards, two attaching onto the heels of his boots and two onto the toes, then he let the shards be carried by him, before he began forcing the shards to slowly stop moving, slow enough that his legs weren't going to break from the sudden impact.

As he increased the rigidity of the shards, his speed diminished to a halt, and then, before the gravity forced him to fall, he shifted the shards and stood in the air. Still maintaining a gaze over the demon, he had stopped his speed just in time to dodge the next attack, this time with a spear.

The silver spear shot through the sky, directed at Solaris's head. Not being used to the new degree of movement, Solaris couldn't dodge as effectively, and so he was forced to block.

Moving the remaining shards from under his skin, he formed a shield, the silver blade simply bounced off the shield, the trajectory was thrown off by the sudden appearance of the shards, after feeling the shaft of the weapon bounce off, he leaned backwards and willed the shards on his feet to move, pushing him back, his body flew backwards and then contoured so that he was heading towards the gound, as he did the other shards dashed over to him including the ones that he had left near the ground.

As he grew closer to the ground, a sound appeared behind him, the sound of flapping wings. The demon was upon him. Solaris ' eyes shot open in terror. The demon had already caught up to him. turning his head and spotting the demon Solaris, he began to panic. This creature was much too fast, much too strong, and much too vile. Solaris was filled with fear and began forcing himself to think.

If I send the shards, I can....

"AGAGHHHHH"

The silver spear punctured Solaris ' leg.

His mind went blank as the roaring pain seared across his body; the weapon hurt so much more than anything else.

But the pain wasn't all that affected Solaris; his heartbeat increased as he felt an uncontrollable rage boiling from the depths of his soul. His face contorted into a vicious snarl.

As his body flipped and turned to face the demon, his fist was already being swung at its face.

Striking with all his might, he launched at the demon's beak, yet the demon dodged without any trouble and launched a counterattack with his spear. Aiming for his heart this time, yet six shards moved into a shield and blocked the attack with ease. As soon as it did, the remaining ten shards reached Solaris and formed a circle. before being launched at the creature.

A vile, disturbing scream left the demon's beak as the shards stabbed into its chest. Having a split second to recover, Solaris moved his body and swung his fist into the lower part of the beak, which was still soaked with the blood of its previous prey.

"SHUT UP! JUST DIE ALREADY!"

CLACK!

A loud echo sounded as the beak was forced shut. As it did, the creature's arm retaliated and punched Solaris across the face, sending him flying once again.

This time, Solaris made sure to keep his shards with him; the four on his feet moved and began to slow his movement before coming to a stop. As it did, the monster flashed across the sky, its silver spear creating a mesmerising arc, as it sliced through the air and towards Solaris.

With no options left, he moved his arms into a block and added the shards above them in an X to stop the attack.

As the blade struck the X, a ringing of metals echoed throughout the city, and the anger within Solaris began to shrink, as if it had been an external force applying it to his psyche.

Now all he felt was fear and hunger, as a tear rolled down his face, a face of terror, the tear evaporated into steam, as a bright light surrounded the area.

"Ember?"

As soon as these frightened words left his mouth, the pressure of the demon's spear disappeared, as well as the demon's body.

Looking up, he saw three figures all with wings, fighting a distance away, one engulfed in a burning fire, one with a beak and a long neck, and a third with the face of a hyena and a hunched back.

"Why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve this?!"
