Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – Fired in One Night

Emily Carter knew something was wrong the moment she walked into the office.

The air felt different.

Too quiet.

Too tense.

Conversations that normally filled the open space with laughter and keyboard clicks had turned into whispers. Heads turned as she passed by, then quickly looked away.

Her heels slowed against the marble floor.

What now?

She had worked at Morrison & Hale for three years. Three exhausting, coffee-fueled, deadline-chasing years. She wasn't the best employee, but she wasn't the worst either.

So why did it feel like she was walking toward her own execution?

"Emily."

Her manager's voice cut through the silence.

Mr. Donovan stood outside his glass office, arms folded tightly across his chest. His expression was unreadable.

"Can you come in for a moment?"

Her stomach dropped.

"Of course."

She stepped inside. The glass door closed behind her with a soft click that sounded far too final.

Mr. Donovan didn't ask her to sit.

That was never a good sign.

He cleared his throat. "We're making structural changes in the company."

Structural changes.

Corporate language for disaster.

"I don't understand," she said carefully.

"It's not about your performance," he added quickly, avoiding her eyes. "The company is downsizing. Your position has been… eliminated."

Eliminated.

Like she was a mistake.

Like she never existed.

Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. "You're firing me?"

"It's not personal."

It always was.

"When?"

"Effective immediately."

The words hit harder than she expected.

Immediate.

No warning. No preparation.

Just gone.

Three years reduced to a handshake and a cardboard box.

"I see," she whispered, though she didn't. Not really.

Her rent was due next week. Her savings were barely enough for two months.

What was she supposed to do now?

Mr. Donovan slid a white envelope across the desk. "Your final payment."

She stared at it for a moment before taking it. It felt heavier than it should.

"Good luck, Emily."

Good luck.

She forced a polite smile, because pride was the only thing she had left.

"Thank you for the opportunity."

And just like that, it was over.

---

The elevator ride down felt suffocating.

She kept her chin up, refusing to cry in front of curious coworkers pretending not to stare.

The moment the elevator doors opened to the lobby, her composure cracked.

The city outside was loud and indifferent. Cars honked. People rushed past her without a second glance.

How could the world continue so normally when hers had just collapsed?

She walked blindly, not caring where she was going. The cool evening wind brushed against her face, drying the tears she refused to let fall.

"You should've seen it coming," she muttered to herself.

The company had been unstable for months. Rumors of acquisitions. New investors. New leadership.

New leadership…

A sleek black car suddenly pulled up to the curb in front of her.

She stepped back instinctively.

The car door opened.

And he stepped out.

Tall.

Impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit that screamed money and authority. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his sharp jawline rigid with control.

But it was his eyes that froze her in place.

Cold.

Calculating.

Dangerously unreadable.

He didn't look at her at first. His attention was on his phone, his expression bored, almost irritated.

Then—

He moved.

Straight toward her.

She panicked and tried to step aside.

Too late.

Her heel twisted against the pavement.

Her balance faltered.

And before she could stop herself—

She crashed into him.

Hard.

Her bag slipped from her shoulder, papers scattering across the sidewalk like fallen leaves.

"I'm so sorry!" she blurted, dropping to her knees to gather the mess.

Silence answered her.

A heavy, suffocating silence.

She felt it before she saw it.

His gaze.

Slowly, she looked up.

Big mistake.

Up close, he was even more intimidating.

Sharp features. Perfect posture. Not a single wrinkle on his suit despite her collision.

He didn't look angry.

He looked… displeased.

Like she had inconvenienced him simply by existing.

"Watch where you're going," his voice was low, smooth—dangerously calm.

Her cheeks burned. "I said I'm sorry."

He didn't respond immediately.

Instead, his eyes scanned her face.

Not with interest.

With assessment.

As if measuring her worth in seconds.

She swallowed.

Why did that feel more humiliating than being fired?

One of his assistants rushed forward. "Sir, the meeting—"

"I know," he interrupted coldly.

Sir?

Emily glanced at the black car. The discreet logo near the back door caught her attention.

Knight Corporation.

Her heart skipped.

Everyone in the city knew that name.

Alexander Knight.

The youngest CEO to take control of a multi-billion-dollar empire.

Ruthless in business.

Emotionless in interviews.

Untouchable.

And she had just crashed into him like an idiot.

Fantastic.

She quickly stood up, clutching her papers to her chest. "It won't happen again."

She turned to leave, mortified beyond words.

"Wait."

The single word stopped her mid-step.

Her back stiffened.

Slowly, she faced him again.

His eyes hadn't left her.

"What's your name?" he asked.

The question caught her off guard.

"E-Emily Carter."

He repeated it softly, as if testing the sound.

"Emily."

Why did it feel like he was memorizing it?

"Do you work nearby?" he continued.

Her pride hesitated.

But what did she have left to lose?

"Not anymore."

A flicker of something passed through his eyes.

Interest?

No. Impossible.

"You were fired."

It wasn't a question.

She hated how easily he read her.

"Yes."

Silence stretched between them.

The city noise faded into the background.

Then he did something unexpected.

He smiled.

It wasn't warm.

It wasn't kind.

It was strategic.

"How would you like a job?"

Her brain froze.

"What?"

"My assistant resigned this morning," he said calmly. "I need someone immediately."

Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it.

This had to be a joke.

"You don't even know me."

"I don't need to."

The arrogance in his voice should have angered her.

Instead, it unsettled her.

"I learn quickly," she said defensively.

"I'm aware."

That confused her even more.

"How?"

His lips curved slightly.

"You walked into me without hesitation. That tells me you're distracted. Probably desperate. Desperate people work hard."

Her chest tightened.

Was that supposed to be a compliment?

"I'm not desperate."

His gaze sharpened.

"No?"

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Rent.

Bills.

Zero savings.

Right.

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Close enough that she could smell his cologne—dark, expensive, intoxicating.

"This is not a normal job, Miss Carter," he said quietly. "It requires loyalty. Availability. Absolute discretion."

The words felt heavy.

"What exactly would I be doing?"

"Anything I ask."

Her pulse skipped.

That sounded… dangerous.

"And if I refuse?"

His expression didn't change.

"You walk away."

Simple.

Cold.

Controlled.

This was insane.

Taking a job from a stranger. A powerful, intimidating billionaire she had just collided with.

But wasn't being unemployed more terrifying?

He glanced at his watch. "You have ten seconds to decide."

Ten seconds?

Was he serious?

"Ten."

Her breath quickened.

"Nine."

This was crazy.

"Eight."

She needed income.

"Seven."

He was watching her like she was already his decision.

"Six."

Why did she feel like this choice would change her entire life?

"Five."

Her heart screamed to run.

"Four."

Her mind whispered stay.

"Three."

She met his eyes.

They weren't just cold.

They were challenging her.

"Two."

If she said yes… there would be no turning back.

"One."

She inhaled sharply.

"I'll take it."

Silence.

Then—

That same dangerous smile returned.

"Good."

He opened the car door for her.

"Get in."

Emily hesitated for half a second.

Then she stepped forward.

As she slid into the back seat beside Alexander Knight, she had no idea—

She had just entered a world far more dangerous than unemployment.

And Alexander Knight never made offers without a price.
