Sebastian snapped back into his carefully crafted mask instantly. That fleeting moment of raw honesty vanished like it had never existed.
"This will be over before you know it," he declared, clicking his seatbelt into place. "Weather conditions down south are ideal."
I secured my own belt, watching that vulnerable crack seal itself shut completely. Whatever he'd been about to reveal about discovering something about her was locked away now. The fortress walls had rebuilt themselves in seconds.
While the aircraft shuddered through more turbulence, my thoughts spiraled relentlessly. She was what exactly? Unfaithful? Was that the revelation that had shattered him? Sebastian Sterling, this man who appeared to possess everything imaginable, had also tasted the bitter sting of betrayal?
More pressing still: how did this change things between us, this strange contract we'd stumbled into together?
