Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: The Night Before Round Two

Kai didn't sleep much that night.

After the black car drove away, he stayed by the window for nearly an hour, watching the empty street. The city lights of Yangon flickered quietly in the distance, reflecting off damp pavement from a late-night drizzle.

In his previous life, the first real-world surveillance had happened months after he became famous.

Now it had begun before the second preliminary round.

Everything was moving faster.

Too fast.

His phone buzzed again.

SilverLune calling.

He answered immediately.

"You're still awake," she said.

"You too."

"Yeah… after that scan warning, I couldn't log back in."

Kai sat down on the edge of his bed.

"That was the right decision."

"You said it was corporate curiosity," she continued quietly. "But it didn't feel like curiosity."

He considered his words carefully.

"It was an evaluation."

"For what?"

"Risk."

Silence hung on the line.

Then Luna sighed.

"You're starting to scare me a little."

Kai closed his eyes briefly.

In the previous timeline, she hadn't known anything about the corporate side of the game until it was too late.

He didn't want to drag her into that world again.

But keeping her completely blind might be worse.

"Just focus on tomorrow's match," he said.

"You always change the subject."

"I prioritize the tournament."

She paused.

"…You're doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Acting like the tournament matters more than everything else."

Kai almost laughed bitterly.

If only she knew.

In 2048, the Eternum Global Championship wasn't just a competition.

It was a global stage where corporate control over Eternum Online solidified.

Winning it had turned him into the most valuable player in the world.

And the most dangerous asset.

"Trust me," he said quietly. "The tournament matters."

Another long pause.

Then Luna's tone softened.

"Alright."

"…But after tomorrow's matches, you owe me an explanation."

Kai didn't promise.

He didn't refuse either.

"Get some sleep," he said instead.

"Goodnight, Kai."

The call ended.

He set the phone down slowly.

She was getting closer to the truth.

Faster than expected.

Morning — Eternum Arena

The coliseum was even louder today.

Word about NoctisReign's first match had spread overnight. Spectators packed the upper platforms while floating cameras captured every angle.

Kai entered the waiting hall quietly.

Several players recognized him immediately.

Whispers spread.

"That's him."

"Shadow class guy."

"He beat RivenBlade in under two minutes."

He ignored them and checked the bracket.

Round Two opponent:

IronClaw.

A tank-class warrior with massive defense stats.

Kai remembered him well.

In the original timeline, IronClaw had been eliminated in the quarterfinals by a coordinated team burst strategy.

But in a one-on-one duel—

He was extremely difficult to defeat.

High defense.

Massive HP pool.

And one ability that reflected damage.

Kai smiled faintly.

Most players tried to overpower IronClaw.

That was the mistake.

You didn't break a wall.

You walked around it.

Luna's Match

Kai watched from the sideline as Luna's duel began.

Her opponent rushed aggressively with a dual dagger build.

Fast.

Unpredictable.

But Luna had improved since their training session.

She waited half a beat longer before releasing her arrows.

Exactly like he taught her.

First arrow—leg slow.

Second—shoulder hit.

Third—perfect headshot.

The match ended quickly.

Winner: SilverLune

She looked toward the sidelines immediately.

Kai gave a small nod.

Her smile was brighter than usual.

Kai vs. IronClaw

The arena gate closed.

IronClaw stepped forward like a moving fortress.

Heavy armor.

Tower shield.

Warhammer the size of a small tree.

He grinned confidently.

"I've been waiting for this fight."

Kai said nothing.

The countdown reached zero.

IronClaw didn't charge immediately.

Smart.

He advanced slowly, shield raised.

Waiting for Kai to make the first move.

Most assassins relied on burst damage.

Against him, that burst would trigger the reflect ability.

Kai walked in a slow circle.

Studying.

Calculating.

IronClaw suddenly lunged with a wide hammer swing.

Kai dodged easily.

But he didn't counterattack.

He kept circling.

The crowd murmured.

"Why isn't he attacking?"

IronClaw frowned.

"Running already?"

Kai stepped forward slightly.

Then retreated again.

Baiting.

Testing.

IronClaw grew impatient.

He slammed the hammer into the ground.

Shockwave ability.

Kai jumped over it.

Still no attack.

The tank-class warrior finally activated his reflect aura.

A glowing red barrier formed around his armor.

"There!" someone in the crowd shouted.

"If the assassin attacks now, he'll kill himself!"

But Kai still didn't strike.

He waited.

Three seconds.

Four.

Five.

The reflect aura flickered.

Expired.

In that exact instant—

Kai moved.

Shadow Step.

Behind the shield.

Three rapid strikes along armor joints.

HP dropped 15%.

IronClaw roared and turned.

Too slow.

Kai vanished into shadow again.

The pattern repeated.

Hit.

Disappear.

Wait for reflect.

Strike during cooldown.

Within two minutes, the giant warrior's HP dropped to critical.

IronClaw realized the trap too late.

"You memorized my skill timing…"

Kai didn't answer.

Final strike.

Shadow Rend.

The tank collapsed.

Winner: NoctisReign

The arena exploded with cheers.

Even commentators sounded shocked.

"He dismantled IronClaw like a puzzle!"

"Perfect timing control!"

Kai looked up again.

The VIP platform was occupied.

Victor Hale watched calmly from behind the glass.

This time—

He applauded slowly.

After the Match

Kai exited the arena corridor.

Luna ran toward him.

"That was insane!"

"Predictable opponent."

She laughed.

"You're going to say that about everyone, aren't you?"

"Most players repeat patterns."

She walked beside him toward the balcony.

"You don't."

"I learned not to."

They leaned against the railing overlooking the arena floor.

For a moment, the noise below faded.

"You know," Luna said softly, "you're not what I expected."

"What did you expect?"

"A cocky esports prodigy."

"And?"

"You're more like…" she searched for the word.

"…someone carrying too many memories."

Kai stiffened slightly.

That observation was too close to the truth.

Before he could respond—

A voice interrupted.

"Impressive performance."

Kai turned.

Victor Hale stood behind them.

His avatar looked simple compared to other executives.

Elegant black coat.

Minimal armor.

But the authority in his presence was unmistakable.

"Mr. NoctisReign," Victor continued calmly. "Or should I say… Kai Ren?"

Luna's eyes widened.

"How do you know his real name?"

Victor smiled politely.

"NeuroCore invests heavily in talent scouting."

Kai stepped slightly forward.

Positioning himself between Victor and Luna.

"Can we help you?" he asked coldly.

Victor studied him with interest.

"You've accelerated the competitive ladder in ways we didn't predict."

"Is that a problem?"

"Not necessarily."

Victor's gaze shifted briefly to Luna.

"And your partner here is quite popular."

Kai's jaw tightened.

Victor noticed.

"Relax," the executive said smoothly. "I'm only here to offer opportunity."

"We're not interested," Kai replied immediately.

Victor chuckled softly.

"You refused my recruitment call this morning."

Luna looked between them.

"You called him already?"

"Yes," Victor said pleasantly.

"Then you have your answer," Kai said.

Victor stepped closer.

Just enough that his voice dropped lower.

"You're very confident for someone so early in the tournament."

Kai met his eyes without blinking.

"I plan ahead."

Victor's smile faded slightly.

"Good."

"Because so do I."

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Victor turned away.

"Enjoy your victories, Mr. Ren."

He began walking toward the VIP platform again.

"But remember…"

He paused.

"Every system eventually corrects anomalies."

Victor disappeared into the crowd.

Luna exhaled slowly.

"…I really don't like that guy."

Kai stared at the empty corridor where Victor vanished.

"Neither do I."

Because he already knew exactly what Victor was capable of.

Murder.

Manipulation.

Control.

And now—

The game between them had officially begun.

Above the arena, the tournament brackets shifted again.

Round Three approaching.

But the real battle had already started.

And this time—

Kai Ren intended to win long before the final match.
