Chapter 16 - The boy who stood

🌌 STARLOST

Episode 16 — "The Boy Who Stood Before the End"

The sky is breaking.

The oceans are trembling.

And somewhere above the world, something enormous is trying to enter reality.

---

THE FIRST COUNTERATTACK

Nova stands in the middle of the street.

His golden eyes reflect the crack stretching across the heavens.

Beside him, Aira holds his arm.

Not because she thinks she can stop what's coming.

But because she refuses to let him face it alone.

Nova looks at her.

"Aira."

"Hmm?"

"If I tell you to run—"

"No."

"You haven't heard what I was going to say."

"Don't need to."

Nova stares at her.

"That is not a logical response."

"And you're an alien who argues with people during the apocalypse. We're both doing our best."

For one brief moment—

Nova almost smiles.

Almost.

Then the ground shakes.

BOOOOOOM!

A wave of pressure sweeps across the city.

Windows rattle.

Cars slide across the road.

People stumble as gravity suddenly pulls sideways.

Nova immediately raises his hand.

The air bends.

The falling debris freezes in midair.

For three seconds, the entire street becomes a photograph.

Then Nova closes his fist.

Everything gently settles onto the ground.

Aira stares at him.

"Okay."

She points at the floating car that has just landed perfectly between two parking spaces.

"That was actually pretty cool."

Nova looks exhausted.

"Please appreciate it later."

"Fine. I'll schedule my appreciation for tomorrow."

"Thank you."

"Assuming we have a tomorrow."

Nova turns toward her.

"Aira."

"What?"

"You're making the situation worse."

She gives him a small grin.

"You're welcome."

Then the darkness moves.

And the jokes stop.

---

THE COMMANDER'S ARRIVAL

High above Earth—

The Ascension Vessel changes direction.

Its enormous engines ignite.

A scientist rushes toward the Commander.

"Sir! The vessel is entering the planet's upper atmosphere!"

The Commander doesn't look away from the viewscreen.

"Open a channel."

"To the target?"

"No."

He pauses.

"To Earth."

---

Across the planet, televisions and communication systems flicker back to life.

A strange symbol appears on every functioning screen.

Then a face emerges.

The alien Commander.

For the first time, humanity sees the leader of the civilization that has been hunting Nova.

His voice reaches the entire world.

"Residents of Earth. You are currently facing an entity designated the Devourer."

A scientist beside him whispers something.

The Commander ignores it.

"Your weapons cannot harm it. Your technology cannot contain it. And the destruction of your planet would be an insignificant consequence of its arrival."

Aira looks at the nearest screen.

"Wow. He really knows how to introduce himself."

Nova watches silently.

The Commander continues.

"We have pursued the individual known to you as Nova because his existence is connected to the origin of this phenomenon."

The screen changes.

An image of Nova appears.

Then a second designation.

ASTRA — FINAL KEY.

Aira slowly turns toward Nova.

"You're famous."

Nova doesn't respond.

"Nova?"

He looks down.

"I didn't know."

For once, she doesn't tease him.

Because she can see the truth in his eyes.

He genuinely doesn't know.

The Commander speaks again.

"If the Final Key awakens completely, the consequences may be irreversible."

The transmission abruptly ends.

Silence fills the street.

Aira looks at Nova.

"So, just checking."

She raises one finger.

"Are we dealing with an alien invasion, an ancient cosmic monster, or a mysterious boy with an identity crisis?"

Nova thinks for a moment.

"All three."

Aira closes her eyes.

"Of course we are."

---

THE THING BEYOND THE SKY

Far above the planet—

The gigantic hand pulls farther through the crack.

Its fingers stretch across the atmosphere.

But something is wrong.

The creature isn't simply entering Earth.

Reality itself is bending around it.

Wherever its shadow passes, the stars disappear.

The ancient structure retreats into the darkness.

Its enormous eye turns toward Nova.

A message enters his mind.

THE SEAL IS FAILING.

Nova looks up.

"What seal?"

The voice answers.

THE ONE YOU WERE CREATED TO BECOME.

Nova freezes.

Created?

Before he can ask another question—

the darkness speaks.

"Little Key."

Its voice echoes through every living mind.

"Do you remember your purpose?"

Nova clenches his fists.

"No."

A pause.

"Good."

The creature's eye narrows.

"Then you may suffer the surprise."

Suddenly—

a black wave bursts from the crack.

It races toward Earth.

Nova steps forward.

Time fractures around him.

He sees the wave arriving.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three.

In one possible future, the city disappears.

In another, the entire planet is covered by darkness.

In another—

Nova sees himself standing alone beneath a completely empty sky.

No Aira.

No Earth.

Nothing.

He gasps.

The visions collapse.

Aira catches his shoulder.

"Hey! Stay with me!"

Nova looks at her.

"I saw what happens if I fail."

"Then we'll try something else."

"You don't understand. Every possibility—"

"Nova!"

He falls silent.

Aira takes both his hands.

"Look at me."

He does.

"I'm not asking you to save the universe in one move."

She takes a shaky breath.

"I'm asking you to figure out the next move."

For a moment, Nova simply looks at her.

Then he nods.

"One move."

"Exactly."

She releases his hands.

"And preferably one that doesn't destroy the planet."

"I will consider that."

"Please do more than consider it!"

---

THE FIRST LIGHT

Nova closes his eyes.

The golden light around him begins to change.

It isn't brighter.

It isn't stronger.

It is quieter.

The air becomes perfectly still.

Even the enormous crack seems to pause.

Nova hears a sound from somewhere deep within himself.

A heartbeat.

Not his own.

Something ancient.

Something familiar.

Then—

a memory opens.

A child stands inside a vast chamber made of light.

Around him, figures move like constellations.

One of them kneels before the child.

"Remember this, Astra."

The child's eyes are golden.

"Power does not make you the key."

The figure places a hand against his chest.

"Your choice does."

The memory changes.

The chamber is collapsing.

Stars vanish beyond its walls.

Someone screams.

The child reaches toward a blinding light.

And a voice whispers—

"When the First Light falls, you must choose what survives."

The memory ends.

Nova opens his eyes.

His expression has changed.

He still doesn't understand everything.

But he understands one thing.

The darkness expects him to become a weapon.

And perhaps that is precisely what it wants.

---

NOVA'S CHOICE

The Devourer pushes farther into the sky.

Its eye fixes on Nova.

"Awaken."

Nova raises his hand.

The golden light around him spreads across the street.

But instead of attacking the creature—

he reaches toward the crack itself.

Aira watches in disbelief.

"Wait. You're not going to fight it?"

Nova's voice is steady.

"No."

He looks at the broken sky.

"I'm going to close the door."

The Commander watches from the Ascension Vessel.

His eyes widen.

"Stop him!"

A scientist turns.

"Sir?"

"He's not attacking the entity!"

The Commander steps toward the screen.

"He's attempting to reactivate the seal!"

Nova's power surges.

Golden symbols appear around the crack.

For a moment, the darkness begins retreating.

The Devourer stops moving.

Its eye widens.

Then—

it laughs.

"You still don't understand."

The symbols suddenly turn black.

Nova's power reverses.

The crack expands.

A violent shock wave throws Nova backward.

"AIRA!"

She reaches him just as he falls.

They hit the ground together.

The golden light vanishes.

Above them, the crack becomes wider than ever.

Nova struggles to stand.

"What did I do wrong?"

Aira helps him up.

"I don't know."

He looks at the sky.

"I nearly made it worse."

"Nearly."

"Aira—"

"Nova."

She looks directly at him.

"You're allowed to get something wrong."

He stares at her.

"But not this."

"Then we'll learn."

She pauses.

"Unless your plan was to stand here looking tragic until the universe gives up."

Nova blinks.

"...That was not my plan."

"Good. Because it was a terrible plan."

Despite everything—

Nova laughs.

Just once.

A small, disbelieving laugh.

And then he notices something.

The darkness has stopped laughing too.

Because the Devourer is looking at Aira.

Not Nova.

Aira.

---

THE VARIABLE

The creature's voice changes.

For the first time, it sounds uncertain.

"That is impossible."

Aira looks around.

"Why is everyone saying that today?"

The Devourer speaks again.

"THE SECOND SIGNAL."

The black sphere in the field suddenly rises into the air.

Its surface splits open.

Inside it—

a symbol appears.

The same symbol that flashed on the mysterious student's hand.

Nova stares at it.

Then at Aira.

Then back at the sphere.

"No..."

The Commander rises from his chair.

"Impossible."

A scientist rushes toward him.

"What is it?"

The Commander doesn't answer.

He is staring at a reading on the screen.

FINAL KEY: ASTRA.

Below it, a second line appears.

COUNTERPART: UNIDENTIFIED.

The scientist whispers.

"There are two?"

The Commander slowly shakes his head.

"No."

His expression becomes darker.

"There were never supposed to be two."

---

THE GIRL WHO WASN'T IN THE PROPHECY

Back on Earth—

Aira feels something warm against her palm.

She looks down.

A faint golden symbol has appeared on her skin.

Nova immediately steps back.

Aira notices.

"Hey."

He looks at her.

"What's wrong?"

Nova's voice is barely audible.

"That symbol..."

"What about it?"

"I saw it in my memory."

Aira studies her palm.

"Okay. That's new."

The symbol pulses.

The entire sky responds.

For a single second, the crack stops expanding.

The Devourer pulls its hand backward.

Not much.

Just enough to reveal something impossible.

Fear.

The creature looks directly at Aira.

Then it speaks.

"YOU SHOULD NOT EXIST."

Aira goes completely still.

Nova steps in front of her.

His golden eyes flare.

"Don't speak to her."

The Devourer slowly closes its eye.

"Then keep her away from the truth."

The crack suddenly folds inward.

A tremendous flash fills the heavens.

And the creature disappears.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Withdrawn.

The sky remains broken, but the immediate pressure vanishes.

Across Earth, gravity returns to normal.

The oceans settle.

The stars reappear.

For the first time since the invasion began—

the world can breathe.

---

AFTER THE IMPOSSIBLE

Several minutes later—

Nova and Aira sit on the rooftop of a nearby building.

Neither speaks for a while.

Then Aira raises her marked hand.

"So."

Nova looks at her.

"Yes?"

"Am I an alien now?"

"No."

"Cosmic princess?"

"No."

"Secret weapon?"

Nova hesitates.

Aira turns slowly toward him.

"Nova."

"I don't know."

She drops her head into her hands.

"Wonderful. I've gone from worrying about homework to possibly being a classified universal mistake."

Nova looks at her palm.

"I'm sorry."

Aira lowers her hands.

"Don't be."

She gives him a small smile.

"Whatever this is, we'll figure it out."

Nova looks at her for a long moment.

Then, quietly—

"Thank you."

Aira's expression softens.

"You're welcome."

Their hands rest beside each other on the rooftop.

Neither moves away.

And for a brief moment, the universe feels very far away.

---

THE LAST TRANSMISSION

Far beyond Earth—

the ancient structure drifts through darkness.

Its eye remains fixed on the distant planet.

A voice emerges from within it.

"The seal has recognized them both."

Another voice answers.

"Then the prophecy was incomplete."

Silence.

Then the first voice speaks again.

"No."

A pause.

"The prophecy was deliberately changed."

The enormous eye closes.

And deep inside the structure—

a chamber opens.

Within it lies an empty cradle.

Made for two.

---

Back on Earth—

Nova suddenly hears the signal again.

But this time, it contains no command.

No warning.

No demand.

Only a name.

ASTRA.

Then another.

A name he has never heard before.

A name he cannot understand.

A name that makes Aira's symbol glow.

Nova turns toward her.

"Aira?"

She looks up.

"What?"

He hesitates.

Then looks toward the stars.

"I think the truth about me..."

He pauses.

"...is connected to you."

Aira stares at him.

Then sighs.

"Of course it is."

She leans back and looks at the broken sky.

"Just promise me one thing."

"What?"

"Next time the universe tries to destroy us..."

She glances at him.

"...let's have breakfast first."

Nova considers this.

"That seems inefficient."

Aira smiles.

"You're impossible."

Nova looks at her.

And this time—

he knows what he wants to say.

"No."

A small smile appears on his face.

"I'm learning."

One was created to open the door.

The other was never supposed to exist.

And the most dangerous question is no longer who Nova really is.
