Chapter 27 - The Grand Audit Gala

The three million dragons from the Sovereign Bank of Valos didn't just fill my treasury; they changed the physical geography of Tortuga's Reach. The old pirate lighthouse was now the Lexen Tower of Finance, a ten-story beacon of polished stone and gear-driven architecture.

"My Lady," Hans said, his voice now confident and professional (he had a new suit and a staff of five junior junior accountants). "The final numbers for the quarter are in. We have achieved a 415% growth in maritime trade since the Bank of Valos... 'restructuring.'"

"415%?" I repeated, not looking up from a complex currency-conversion chart. "Tell the Port Authority to lower the harbor fee by 0.5% for the next week. We don't want to get complacent, Hans. Complacency is how inflation starts."

"Indeed, My Lady. However, there is a more pressing matter. His Highness the Crown Prince Kaelen is in the waiting room. He has... requested an audience regarding a 'Joint-Venture Proposal' that requires immediate 'Signing.'"

The door burst open. Kaelen walked in, no longer looking like a mercenary or a spy. He was in full Royal uniform—a black velvet tunic with a gold-threaded lion, his sword polished to a mirror shine. But his eyes... his eyes were full of a boyish, terrifying excitement.

"Elara!" he said, slamming a leather-bound case onto my desk. "I've reviewed your 'Lexen maritime code.' I think you missed a chapter."

"Kaelen," I sighed, setting down my quill. "You cannot just draft maritime code without my review. We need a 'Legislative Audit' process."

"I don't need code, Elara. I need a Trade Treaty." He opened the case, revealing a single, official document with the Imperial Seal. "My father, the Emperor, has reviewed your work in the Southern Isles. He's... impressed. More accurately, he's terrified of you."

I smiled, a genuine one this time. "Fear is the beginning of respect."

"He has authorized me to sign a 10-year, exclusive trade treaty between the Lexen Free Zone and the Oakhaven Empire. He's acknowledging Tortuga's Reach as a sovereign city-state. In exchange, he wants 5% of all spice trade revenues, and... a 'Permanent Trade Ambassador' stationed in Oakhaven."

"Wait," I said, my "Auditress" brain clicking. "He wants to tax my trade zone? That is a form of imperial taxation without representation!"

"No, it's a 'Security and Intelligence Cooperation Levy,'" Kaelen grinned, leaning close. "And the 'Ambassador' isn't for diplomacy. He wants you, Elara. The 'Villainess' has been invited to return to the Capital for the Grand Gala of Finance. They want to give you a medal... and then probably arrest you for high-functioning capital manipulation."

Kaelen took my hand, his thumb tracing the gears of my new signet ring. "He also has one other request. He... wants to formally announce our engagement at the Gala. Signed and witnessed by the International Guild."

My heart, which I always thought ran on logical compound interest, suddenly did a very un-mathematical double-skip.

"Engagement?" I whispered. "That carries a lot of legal weight, Your Highness. We'd have to pre-calculate the merging of the Lexen and Royal estates."

"I don't want to merge the estates, Elara," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper that sent a different kind of thrill through me. "I want to merge the people. And I'm going to need that in writing, because you're the most dangerous woman in the world, and I'm pretty sure you're the only person who can keep me from accidentally invading a neighboring kingdom."

He pulled me from my chair, and for the first time in our relationship, there was no math in my head. There was just the warmth of his presence and the realization that my "Retirement Island" was looking less like a place... and more like a permanent partner.

"An engagement announcement at the Grand Gala," I said, a slow, calculated smile spreading across my face. "That will increase the value of the Lexen Port Bonds by 15% overnight. Fine, Kaelen. I'll accept. But the wedding contract will have a 'No-Fault Financial Separation' clause. I'm not losing my island for a pretty face."

Kaelen laughed, a rich, happy sound. "Deal. Now, pack your bags, Auditress. We're going back to the Capital. The 'Villainess' is returning. And this time, she has an Empire at her back... and a ledger to balance."
