Chapter 4 - Chapter Four : Walking Through The Ruins

Adrian's steps were slow, deliberate, though his legs still ached from the morning's chaos. The ash and dust clung to his skin, mixing with the sweat that refused to dry in the still-heat of the shattered city. Stormfang walked beside him, moving with a calm, steady presence, its silver lines dimmed but glowing faintly with residual energy. Every now and then, Adrian felt a small, comforting pulse from the wolf, almost as if it was checking in with him, reminding him that they were still alive, still moving.

Lina walked beside him, keeping close but not leaning on him too heavily. Her hands still trembled slightly, though she had recovered a fraction of composure since the small battle in the store. Her eyes scanned the ruined street constantly, flicking from burnt-out cars to the collapsed buildings, to the shadows that seemed to move just at the edge of vision. Despite the fear, there was a sharpness in her gaze—a clarity that made Adrian realize she wasn't just surviving; she was assessing, calculating, preparing herself for what might come next.

"I can't believe this is happening," Lina said quietly, her voice breaking slightly as she glanced at the sky above. It was torn by the Rift, jagged ribbons of violet and black light stretching endlessly, giving the clouds an unnatural, sickly glow. "I mean… one moment, it was just a normal day. School. My cousin making fun of me for studying too much. Then… this." She gestured vaguely at the burning streets around them.

Adrian nodded, feeling a similar pang of disbelief. "I know," he said softly. "I was… well, trying to focus on school too. My little sister… I keep thinking about her. Amara." He swallowed hard, jaw tightening. "And my parents… I don't even know where they are now. It's like everything I thought I understood about my life just… ended."

There was a pause, broken only by the distant crackle of fires and the occasional rumble of debris falling somewhere off in the distance. Stormfang padded silently alongside them, the faint hum of its body reminding Adrian that he was not completely helpless. The wolf had saved both of them, and in some strange way, that presence gave him a little of the confidence he had thought he lost.

Lina spoke again, her voice quieter this time, almost to herself. "I never thought I'd be… afraid like this. Not really. I mean, we all hear about disasters or accidents, but it's never… real until it's right in front of you." She shivered slightly and crossed her arms. "I thought I was ready. I thought I could handle anything. But this… I wasn't ready for this."

Adrian understood that more than he wanted to admit. He forced himself to look at her, to give her some sense of reassurance, though he had very little for himself. "We weren't ready," he said. "None of us were. And that's fine. You're doing fine. You've made it this far. That counts for something."

Lina looked at him then, really looked, and he could see the flicker of relief in her expression. Not relief in the danger passing, but in the understanding that someone else was here with her. That someone else wasn't panicking. That someone else was trying to be steady when the world had stopped being steady.

For the first time in hours, Adrian allowed himself a small smile. "I guess we're… learning as we go," he said. "Which is the only way to survive anyway."

Lina nodded, though her eyes drifted toward the shattered buildings, the crumpled cars, the smoke curling into the sky. "I don't know if my cousin made it," she admitted quietly. "And… my parents…" Her voice cracked, and she looked away, swallowing hard before continuing. "I don't even know if I'll ever see them again."

Adrian felt a familiar tightness in his chest. He wanted to say something that would make it better, something that would make the fear vanish, but there were no words that could do that. Not really. He could only nod and offer a steadying hand if she needed it.

They walked in silence for a few minutes, the only sounds being the scrape of debris underfoot and Stormfang's soft padding beside them. Then, almost casually, Lina asked, "Before all this… what was your life like?"

Adrian looked at her. He almost laughed bitterly, but the sound got caught in his throat. "Mine? It was… normal, I guess. Boring, even. I went to school, came home, helped my mom and dad when I could, tried to keep Amara out of trouble. My sister… she's little. She's smart, but stubborn. Always asking too many questions. My elder sister, she graduated last year, so she's gone mostly, living her own life. Our parents… well, they worked a lot. Not a lot of money, not a lot of time. But they tried." He shook his head, rubbing his temples as if the act could erase the memory of the ordinary worries he had carried just that morning. "And now… I don't even know if that matters anymore."

Lina's brow furrowed. "I get it," she said softly. "Before the Rift, I had my routine too. School, chores, my cousin dragging me along… little fights, little victories, stupid stuff that mattered so much at the time. And now… none of it matters. Everything is upside down. Everything I thought I could control is gone." She swallowed hard, eyes flicking at him for a brief moment, as if seeking confirmation that someone else felt the same.

Adrian nodded. "Yeah. That's exactly how it feels."

They walked like that for a while, talking quietly, remembering their small, ordinary lives, sharing memories that seemed almost sacred against the backdrop of a city in ruin. Each story they told reminded them both of who they had been before the Rift, before the chaos. And somehow, it made them feel less small, less powerless.

Then, suddenly, the world reminded them again how fragile that feeling was. A low, guttural growl came from around the corner of a nearby alley. Adrian's body stiffened immediately. Stormfang's fur bristled, silver lines brightening faintly. Lina froze, her hand gripping his sleeve for a brief moment.

Adrian scanned the alley. From the shadows, a creature stepped forward. It was smaller than the last one, but lean and fast, with long limbs and glowing eyes. Its movement was deliberate, calculating, and it paused only long enough to stare at the three of them before it lunged.

Stormfang didn't hesitate. It leaped forward, teeth bared, silver lightning dancing along its body. Adrian grabbed Lina's hand, pulling her back, but she stumbled. He cursed under his breath, but the wolf's presence was like a shield. The creature collided with Stormfang, claws slashing, and Adrian felt the energy surge through the bond. The shock hit him hard, chest tightening, but he held his ground, gripping Lina's hand.

Then it happened.

Lina's eyes widened. A strange cold, a surge of energy, rolled through her body without warning. Her palms glowed faintly with a soft blue light. The creature's attack faltered mid-lunge as Lina instinctively pushed her hands forward, releasing a pulse that threw it back several feet.

Adrian's jaw dropped. "Lina… what—"

She shook her head, shock written across her face. "I—I don't know!"

Stormfang stayed close, calm, but alert, watching the interaction carefully. The wolf's ears flicked at every movement of Lina's glowing hands. Adrian felt the connection between them, between human and wolf, deepen even as new uncertainty grew.

The creature recovered quickly, hissing, and lunged again, but this time Lina moved with confidence, instinct guiding her. She sent out another pulse, more controlled, striking the creature squarely. It collapsed with a low, guttural groan, unable to continue.

Adrian's hands dropped from hers as she straightened, breathing heavily. "You… you just…" His voice caught. "You saved us."

Lina exhaled slowly, trying to calm herself. Her hands glowed faintly, pulsing with residual energy. "I didn't… I didn't even know I could do that," she admitted, shaking. "I… I didn't know."

Stormfang gave a low, approving rumble. Adrian put a hand on its neck, feeling the warmth of its fur. The wolf nudged him gently, almost as if it was acknowledging Lina's contribution, recognizing her as part of their team.
