The library was quieter than usual that afternoon. Sunlight spilled through tall windows, casting long shadows across the study tables. Eun-ji slipped inside, her backpack bouncing lightly as she carried her books.
She paused when she saw Ji-ho already sitting at their usual corner table, his jacket draped neatly over the chair, dark notebook open, and pen moving in short, precise strokes. He looked… focused, almost studious—but her sharper senses immediately noticed the way his hand twitched slightly when sunlight hit the page.
Always the perfect image, even when he's hiding something, she thought, tilting her head. But what is he hiding this time?
Sliding into the chair across from him, she let her gaze drift to his notebook. "Pumpkin," she said casually, letting the nickname slip without thinking.
"Cherry," he murmured, barely looking up, though the tiniest twitch at the corner of his eye betrayed him.
Eun-ji smirked. He notices.
She opened her own notebook but couldn't focus. Her curiosity about Ji-ho had been growing ever since she started noticing little things—the way he avoided sunlight, his reactions to… certain situations, and now, subtle details she couldn't ignore.
Like that vein in his hand just now.
She leaned slightly forward, brushing her fingers almost casually against the edge of his notebook. "You always look so serious here," she teased. "Do you ever relax, or is that just your natural state?"
Ji-ho's head snapped up, dark eyes locking on hers. "I relax," he said quickly, though his voice carried an edge that made her suppress a laugh. "Just… not here."
"Not here?" Eun-ji repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Where, exactly? Somewhere exotic? A vampire hideout?" She grinned at the teasing joke, careful to keep her tone light.
He froze for half a second, expression unreadable. Then a flicker of embarrassment crossed his face—just enough for her to notice. Bingo.
They returned to studying, the library quiet except for the soft scratching of pens and occasional shuffle of pages. Eun-ji's mind, however, refused to stay on the textbook.
She observed:
How he flinched slightly when someone walked in from the sunlit hallway.
The way he tilted his head when he thought she wasn't looking.
The sharpness in his gaze when a classmate mentioned a Halloween-themed café event.
There's definitely something off about him, she thought, biting her lip in curiosity.
At the same time, she noticed hers
elf leaning closer than necessary.
Focus, Eun-ji. You're not supposed to be staring like this.
Ji-ho cleared his throat, snapping her out of her thoughts. "Cherry, you're spacing out again."
"I'm… um…" she stammered, cheeks heating. "Studying?"
His lips twitched, almost a smile. "Studying?" he repeated, mock disbelief in his tone. "Sure."
Eun-ji smirked back, daring him. "You know, you're really easy to read sometimes. I could practically write a thesis on your expressions."
"Be careful," he murmured, dark eyes flicking up from his notebook. "You might learn too much."
She laughed softly, hiding a blush. Oh, this is exactly the thrill I needed.
Hours passed quietly. Occasionally, their elbows brushed as they reached for the same pen or book. Every time, Ji-ho's reaction was subtle but telling: a slight stiffening of posture, a small shift in gaze, and just the faintest hint of fluster on his otherwise unreadable face.
Eun-ji noticed every detail, storing them in the back of her mind. I'm piecing it together… slowly, but surely.
Just as she was reaching for her water bottle, he paused mid-note and looked up sharply. "Cherry…"
She blinked. "Yes?"
He leaned slightly forward, lowering his voice. "Be careful. Not everything you notice… is safe to explore."
Her grin widened. "I know… I like a little danger."
His gaze darkened, almost a challenge. "You do, huh?"
"Yes," she replied smoothly. "And you're just… tempting me too much."
A pause stretched between them, heavy but playful. Eun-ji's heart raced as she watched him hesitate, the faintest twitch at the corner of his lips betraying his fluster.
Finally, she broke the tension, closing her notebook with a soft thud. "Alright, pumpkin," she said lightly, tapping the corner of his notebook. "Study break?"
Ji-ho raised an eyebrow. "Break? You mean… conversation?"
"Exactly," she said, leaning back and crossing her arms. "We could discuss… anything. Books. Movies. Your mysterious habits that make me suspicious."
He groaned softly, hiding his face in his hands for a second. "Suspicious? I don't know what you're talking about."
Eun-ji grinned, hiding her laughter behind her hand. Sure, pretend, Ji-ho.
Then, a tiny scrape from a chair in the next row drew his attention. His body tensed instantly, muscles coiling like a predator ready to react. Eun-ji noticed and tilted her head, curious. "Still… protective?"
He didn't answer, only watched the row of students nearby with the faintest hint of intensity in his gaze.
She leaned slightly closer, voice teasing: "You know, I think you're hiding something."
He finally looked at her, eyes dark but soft, and let out a low sigh. "Cherry… you have no idea."
Her grin widened. "Maybe I do."
He blinked, caught off guard, just enough for a flicker of a smile to escape.
And just like that, the library—quiet, sunlit, and ordinary—felt charged with unspoken truths, teasing, and barely-contained emotions.
