Chapter 10 - Chapter 7:

Chapter 7: Midnight ConfessionsThe silence that followed the snap of the branch was heavier than the noise itself. Julian stood at the edge of the porch, a statue of coiled tension, his hand resting on the hilt of a blackened steel knife tucked into his waistband. He didn't blink. He didn't breathe. He simply stared into the abyss of the tree line."Julian?" Elowyn whispered, her voice trembling. "What is it? A deer? A coyote?""Coyotes don't wear heavy-soled boots, Wyn," he said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying vibration. He waited another minute, his eyes tracking something only he could see in the shifting shadows. Finally, he relaxed—just a fraction. He didn't pull his hand away from the weapon, but he turned back to her, his face a mask of cold, hard stone. The man who had almost kissed her was gone. In his place was a soldier who had seen too much."Get inside," he commanded. "Lock the door. Don't open it unless you hear me say your name twice.""No," Elowyn said, her fear sparking into anger. She stood her ground, her heart hammering against her ribs. "This is my house. My meadow. You don't get to bark orders at me in the dark. Tell me who is out there."Julian looked at her, and for a fleeting second, the exhaustion in his eyes returned. He reached out, grabbing her arm—not roughly, but with an urgency that silenced her. He pulled her into the kitchen, slamming the heavy oak door and throwing the bolt.He leaned his forehead against the wood, his chest heaving. "I told you the ghosts followed me, Elowyn. I wasn't being poetic.""Who, Julian?"He turned around, sliding down the door until he was sitting on the floor, his long legs stretched out across the linoleum. He looked up at her, the light from the overhead bulb casting deep shadows under his eyes."When I left ten years ago, I didn't just run. I was taken," he began, his voice hollow. "My father had gambled away money that didn't belong to him—money belonging to a syndicate that doesn't believe in bankruptcy. They gave me a choice: I could watch them burn this cottage with you inside it, or I could work for them. I could become their 'fixer' in Europe until the debt was erased."Elowyn sank onto a kitchen chair, her hands shaking. "A fixer? What does that mean?"Julian let out a short, bitter laugh. "It means I spent a decade in the dark corners of Marseille and Berlin, making sure 'problems' went away. I traded my soul for your safety, Wyn. I did things... things that make me a monster. And six months ago, when I finally killed the last of the debt, I thought I was free.""But you aren't," she whispered."The Blackwood Group? They aren't just developers, Elowyn. They're a front. A shell company for the same people I used to work for. They didn't just want the land; they wanted to draw me out. They knew this meadow was the only thing I ever loved. The only place I'd return to."He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled note. He tossed it onto the table.Elowyn picked it up. In jagged, black ink, it read: The elm still bleeds. Pay the rest."There is no rest," Julian said, his eyes unfocused. "They don't want money anymore. They want me back in the fold. And they're using you as the bait."The realization hit Elowyn like a physical blow. The "First Slip" of their kiss wasn't just a romantic moment; it was a target. Every time she got close to him, she was putting a bullseye on her own back."So, what do we do?" she asked, her voice surprisingly steady.Julian looked up at her, a fierce, protective light burning in his dark eyes. "We fight. I spent ten years learning how to destroy men like them. This time, I'm not running. This time, I'm burning their world down before they touch a single leaf on your tree."He reached out, his fingers brushing the hem of her dress. "But you have to promise me one thing, Elowyn. No matter what happens, no matter what you see me do... don't look at me like I'm the boy you loved. That boy died a long time ago."Elowyn knelt on the floor in front of him, taking his scarred hands in hers. "He didn't die, Julian. He's just hiding. And I'm going to help you find him."
