Chapter 7 - KEEPING DISTANCE

Dante Moretti POV

Dante leaves the penthouse at 5:15 AM before Sophia wakes up.

This is the pattern now. He leaves before sunrise and doesn't return until after midnight. Elena handles all communication. When Sophia tries to ask follow-up questions about his condition, he has her send them through email instead. Professional. Distant. Controlled.

He's built walls his entire life. Every relationship reduced to transaction. Every connection stripped down to what he needs and what they can provide. He brought Sophia here to maintain control of his situation.

But control is slipping.

She's observant. She's clever. She's starting to see through the façade in ways that terrify him. And the more she sees, the more dangerous she becomes. Not because she's a threat to him. Because she's becoming something he can't afford to care about.

His phone rings at 2 PM. Dr. Nathan Pierce.

Dante considers not answering. Nathan Pierce has become a liability. But sometimes it's better to handle liabilities directly.

"Nathan."

"Dante, thank you for taking my call. I wanted to discuss the arrangement we made. I need to increase my fee."

The words are calm but underneath them Dante hears desperation. Nathan is threatening him. Subtly. But threatening nonetheless.

"You want more money to stay silent."

"I want more money to keep quiet and to assure you that I'm completely trustworthy. The person who approached me originally, they increased their offer. They're willing to pay me half a million dollars to confirm your diagnosis. Half a million, Dante. That's a lot of money to turn down."

Dante stops walking. The city continues around him but he's frozen in the middle of Manhattan with a phone pressed to his ear and rage building in his chest.

"You're telling me you're considering their offer."

"I'm telling you that I'm a human being. I'm telling you that half a million dollars would change my life. I'm telling you that I need to know you value my silence more than someone else values my betrayal."

Nathan's voice cracks slightly. He's afraid. He should be.

"How much?" Dante asks quietly.

"A million. I want a million dollars and a guarantee that you'll never come after me or my family if I leave New York."

Dante ends the call and makes one phone call to his lawyer. Twenty minutes later, Nathan Pierce receives a wire transfer of one and a half million dollars. With a message attached: "This is triple what you asked. Take it and disappear. Go somewhere far from New York. Go somewhere I can't find you if you ever decide to talk. Because if you do, no amount of distance will save you."

Nathan understands the message perfectly. He takes the money and understands exactly what Dante is capable of. Understanding that he's just made a deal with a man who'll eliminate him without hesitation if he becomes more valuable as a corpse than as a paid silence.

That evening, Dante sits in his office and watches Sophia on the security camera.

She doesn't know he's watching. She sits at the penthouse computer researching conditions at midnight. Her face is illuminated by the screen. Her fingers move quickly across the keyboard. She's not just doing her job. She's trying to figure him out. She's trying to solve the puzzle of what's happening to his body.

That's dangerous.

That's the reason he needs to stay away from her.

If he lets her matter, if he lets her become something more than an expensive tool, then her safety becomes his responsibility. And his enemies are countless. Anyone who finds out she matters to him will use her as leverage. They'll hurt her to hurt him.

Better to keep distance. Better to maintain walls.

His phone buzzes. A message from Isabella: "When are you coming to dinner? Mom's favorite restaurant. Sunday? I miss you."

His sister. The only person in his family who doesn't know what's happening to him. Isabella who lost their mother to the same disease. Isabella who watched their mother deteriorate piece by piece. Isabella who'll recognize the signs the moment she sees him.

He can't let her see him like this.

He can't show weakness in front of family. He can't let anyone know that the untouchable mafia boss is slowly falling apart. He can't let Isabella see that she's about to lose him the same way she lost their mother.

He types back: "Busy. Rain check."

Isabella responds immediately: "You're always busy. You're always avoiding me. Is something wrong? Are you sick?"

The last question hits like a blade.

He doesn't respond.

Instead, he sits in the darkness of his office and watches the city below him. The city that belongs to him. The city that will destroy him. The city that has no idea that its most powerful man is slowly losing his mind.

His email notification chimes at 11:47 PM.

From: Dr. Sophia Chen

Subject: Additional Testing Required

He opens it and reads.

"Mr. Moretti, I've completed the initial blood work analysis. The results show elevated markers consistent with a specific genetic condition. Your medical history doesn't account for these findings. I need permission to run additional tests to confirm my suspicions. Specifically, genetic screening and advanced neurological imaging. I'm afraid of what these tests will reveal, but I'm more afraid of not knowing. Please respond with authorization. Dr. Chen."

She knows.

She doesn't know the name yet. She doesn't have confirmation. But she knows something is very wrong with him. And she's afraid. The email is carefully professional but underneath the clinical language is fear. Fear for his health. Fear for what comes next. Fear of the diagnosis she's about to have to deliver.

Dante reads the email three times.

I'm afraid of what these tests will reveal, but I'm more afraid of not knowing.

She's describing more than medical investigation. She's describing the moment when suspicion becomes certainty. She's describing the moment when he stops being her employer and becomes a patient with a terminal diagnosis.

She's telling him that once she confirms what she already suspects, everything changes.

He sits in the darkness with her email glowing on his screen and types his response:

"Authorization granted. Run all tests. I want complete results by Friday. And Dr. Chen? Thank you for being brave enough to look."

He hits send and realizes that he's just given her the final piece of control. He's given her the keys to his destruction. She's going to confirm his diagnosis. She's going to understand exactly how much time he has left. She's going to become the only person in the world who holds the truth that will destroy his empire.

And he just invited her to do it.
