Chapter 2 - The Wings of Butterflies and the Moonstone

A Grimm's Fairy Tale: The Legend of the Butterfly Fairy

On the border of the distant Glimmer Kingdom lay a flower field shrouded by a magical barrier—the Silver Star Flower Field. Here, colorful Butterfly Dance Flowers bloomed year-round, their petals patterned like butterfly wings in dazzling hues. Yet ever since the kingdom was struck by dark magic a century ago, the field had been gradually forgotten by people, with only fragments remaining in an ancient ballad: "Where silver stars gleam, butterfly wings bear hope; when the moonstone awakens, the fairy returns home..."

Beneath the old oak tree at the heart of the field slumbered an extraordinary butterfly—not with ordinary bright colors, but wings shimmering like silver moonlight, tipped with three tiny specks of starlight. When the first wisp of morning mist drifted over the field, it finally emerged from its cocoon. As it spread its wings, all the Butterfly Dance Flowers around burst into bloom in unison, soft light flowing across their petals.

"You are awake, my child." An ancient face appeared on the oak tree's trunk, its voice rustling like wind through leaves. "I am Grandfather Oak, guardian of this field. You are the last butterfly fairy born here—your name is Yueli."

Yueli fluttered her silver wings and alighted on the largest flower. "Grandfather Oak, what is a butterfly fairy? Why am I here?"

"Long ago, the butterfly fairies of the Glimmer Kingdom were messengers of the earth and flowers, able to paint magical patterns with their wings to heal all wounds." Images flickered through the oak's growth rings. "But a hundred years ago, the dark wizard Draken poisoned the kingdom's Spring of Life with black magic. To protect the spring, the fairies exhausted all their magic to seal Draken within a moonstone. They themselves transformed into Butterfly Dance Flowers, leaving only one egg carrying the fairy bloodline to awaken when the time was right."

Just then, hurried footsteps sounded beyond the field, and a girl in coarse cloth stumbled through the barrier. Her ankle was bleeding, and she was being chased by soldiers in black armor.

"Please... save me!" The girl fell beside Yueli, her pale face etched with fear. "They are Draken's followers—they want to steal the moonstone from me!"

Yueli looked at the pale blue stone hanging around the girl's neck. It glowed faintly in the morning light, resonating with the starlight on her own wings. Without hesitation, she flew above the girl, and her silver radiance fell on the wound, which healed before their eyes.

"There's magical energy here! Search the place!" Shouted the soldiers. Grandfather Oak shook his branches violently, and countless petals drifted down like snow, weaving an invisible veil over the field. When the soldiers rushed in, they saw only empty grass and had to leave cursing under their breath.

The girl was Lena, personal maid to the old king of the Glimmer Kingdom. She told Yueli that the king had fallen gravely ill recently, growing weaker each day, and no royal physician could cure him. The previous night, she had found a moonstone carved with ancient script in the king's secret chamber. The words read: "Only the silver radiance of the butterfly fairy can awaken the sealing power within the moonstone and save the crumbling kingdom." But the news had leaked, and Draken's followers had hunted her all the way here.

"So this is my destiny..." Yueli looked down at her wings. "But Grandfather Oak says I haven't mastered all the fairy magic yet. If I go to the palace now, I may not be a match for Draken's followers."

"Child, though you are not fully awakened, the magic of your wings will serve you as long as you hold love for all life in your heart." Grandfather Oak dropped a leaf that transformed into a small silver butterfly. "It will guide you to awaken your power. Now go—time is running out for the kingdom. Draken's seal is weakening; once he breaks free, darkness will swallow everything!"

Yueli nodded and set off with Lena. Following the silver butterfly's lead, they traveled onward, and Yueli discovered her wings could bring wilted plants back to life and dispel dark energy in the air. But when they reached the Misty Forest on the kingdom's border, a swarm of black butterflies blocked their path—their wings were as dark as ink, barbed along the edges, forged by Draken's dark magic.

"Surrender the moonstone, and we'll spare your lives!" The swarm's leader fluttered its massive wings, its voice laced with bewitching magic. "Lord Draken will grant you eternal power, freeing you from fate's control!"

Lena cowered behind Yueli, but Yueli flew forward bravely. "Darkness can never triumph over light—I won't let you harm anyone!" She beat her wings hard, sending waves of silver light spreading outward. Yet the dark butterflies remained unharmed, letting out sharp jeers.

"Useless! Your magic is still asleep—you're no match for us!" The leader lunged at Lena to snatch the moonstone. At that critical moment, the three stars on Yueli's wings blazed bright, and a silver beam shot out, striking the leader. With a shriek, it began to dissolve into nothingness.

"What... what just happened?" Yueli stared at her wings in wonder. The silver butterfly landed beside her ear. "A fairy's power comes from courage in the heart. When you are willing to sacrifice everything for others, your hidden strength awakens. Now follow me to the forest's heart—there lies what will fully awaken you."

They followed the butterfly to the deep forest, where an ancient altar wrapped in vines stood before them. On the stone platform at its center lay a yellowed spellbook, its cover depicting a silver butterfly just like Yueli. When she opened it gently, the pages revealed all the secrets of the butterfly fairies:

Butterfly fairies were beings forged by Mother Earth from moonlight and flower petals, each with a unique purpose. As the last fairy, Yueli must not only awaken the moonstone's seal but also gather the fairies' souls to restore the field to its former glory. To do this, she had to find three "Butterfly Soul Shards" scattered across the kingdom and merge them into her wings.

The first shard lay in Frosthold City in the kingdom's north, a place frozen in snow and ice year-round—the coldest corner of the Glimmer Kingdom. When Yueli and Lena arrived, they found the entire city encased in a shell of black ice. Residents huddled inside their homes, their faces twisted with suffering.

"The ice here is tainted by dark magic—ordinary fire can't melt it." An old man in a fur coat told them. "They say atop the Icepeak to the north lives a snow spirit with an ice crystal that can purify darkness, but no one has ever reached it alive."

Yueli looked at the black ice covering the city walls, then waved her silver wings. A warm glow fell on the walls, and the ice began to melt slowly. "I can feel the shard is here in the city." She said to Lena. "Let's help the people break free from this ice first, then find the snow spirit."

In the days that followed, Yueli flew over the city each day. Wherever her silver light touched, black ice melted, plants sprouted anew, and smiles returned to the people's faces. Just as the last of the ice was about to disappear, black snow began to fall from the sky, and Draken's followers appeared on the city walls.

"How dare you ruin our plans!" The lead follower raised his dark staff. "Lord Draken says anyone who stops his return will pay with their life!" He chanted a spell, and countless black snow pellets shot toward Yueli and the people like bullets.

Yueli rushed into the air to block most of them, but some hit the residents, sending them into unconsciousness. At that moment, a woman in a white gown drifted down from the sky—her hair was as white as snow, and she held a clear ice crystal. "Stop! Dark magic has no place on this land!"

The woman waved the crystal, and a brilliant white light shot out, scattering all the black snow. She walked to Yueli with a smile. "I am Elsa, the snow spirit. I have long awaited the return of the butterfly fairy. Your light has brought warmth we haven't felt in ages—the first soul shard lies within this crystal."

When Elsa handed her the crystal, it touched Yueli's wing and transformed into a blue glow, merging into her left wing. Yueli felt her magic grow stronger, and the starlight on her wings shone brighter still.

"The second shard is in the Flame Valley to the south, home of the fire elements." Elsa warned. "The valley's guardian has a fiery temper—be careful. Besides, Draken's seal is growing weaker by the hour—you must find all shards quickly!"

Yueli and Lena hurried to the Flame Valley, feeling waves of intense heat even before they drew near. The valley was filled with gushing magma, the air thick with the acrid smell of sulfur, and plants grew twisted and fierce.

"Halt! No outsiders allowed in Flame Valley!" A giant wreathed in flames rose from the magma—he was Yanlie, guardian of the valley. "This is the home of fire elements—no dark or light power shall disturb us here!"

"Lord Yanlie, we mean no harm." Lena explained hastily. "We seek the butterfly soul shard. Only by gathering all shards can we stop Draken's resurrection and protect the entire kingdom!"

"Draken?" Fury flashed in Yanlie's eyes. "A century ago, he tried to enslave the valley with dark magic, but we fought him off together with the butterfly fairies. Since you stand against him, I'll give you a chance—pass the valley's trial, and you shall have the second shard."

The trial Yanlie spoke of was to make the "Flame Flower" bloom in the magma pool at the valley's heart. The flower bloomed only once every hundred years, requiring both warmth and coolness to push through the molten rock.

Yueli flew above the magma pool. First, she used the ice power of her left wing to form a thin layer of ice over the magma's surface, then infused her silver magic into it with her right wing. As the ice melted under heat and magic, just as it was about to vanish completely, a fiery red flower rose slowly from the magma—water droplets glistened on its petals, the legendary Flame Flower!

"Wonderful! You command both ice and light!" Yanlie laughed with delight. "The second soul shard hides within its stamen."

A red glow drifted from the flower's center and merged into Yueli's right wing. Her wings now shone even more brilliantly, silver light interwoven with blue and red, able to radiate both warmth and coolness.

"The third shard lies at the kingdom's heart—beside the Spring of Life beneath the palace." Yanlie's expression grew serious. "But the palace is now in Draken's followers' hands, and the old king is imprisoned. Be careful—Draken could break free at any moment!"

When they reached the palace, everything had changed—the once-white walls were painted black, a statue of Draken stood in the square, and soldiers in black armor patrolled with empty eyes.

"Lena, go find the old king. I'll look for the third shard by the Spring of Life." Yueli said. "The followers will focus on me—be careful!"

Yueli flew over the palace, and her silver glow immediately drew all the followers' attention. "It's the butterfly fairy! Capture her—Lord Draken needs her magic to break free!" The followers raised their staffs, and countless black beams shot toward her.

Yueli dodged nimbly while counterattacking with her wing magic. Blue and red light wove together like a net over the palace, and followers touched by the light regained their senses, staring in shock at their black armor.

"Impossible! How can you break free from dark magic!" The lead follower roared in rage. "Lord Draken, awaken now!"

At his cry, the ground shook violently, and a black pillar of light rose from beneath the palace. A tall figure emerged slowly—Draken the dark wizard! His skin was as hard as stone, his eyes glinting with malice, and broken chains of the seal still wrapped around him.

"Butterfly fairy! You failed to destroy me a century ago—today the whole kingdom shall be mine!" Draken swung his arm hard, sending a massive black shockwave toward Yueli. She had no time to dodge, was struck hard, and fell to the ground, her wings dimming.

Just as Draken prepared to deliver the final blow, Lena rushed over with the old king and a group of awakened soldiers. "Don't hurt her!" Lena held the moonstone high above her head. "Moonstone, grant us strength to help the butterfly fairy defeat darkness!"

The moonstone burst into brilliant blue light, resonating powerfully with Yueli's wings. A surge of strength welled up within her, and she stood again. Her blue and red wing light merged with the moonstone's glow, forming an impenetrable shield.

"Draken, your ambition will not prevail!" Yueli flew into the air and beat her wings hard, sending countless beams of magic toward him. At the same time, she felt a familiar presence from the Spring of Life—the third shard was there!

Ignoring Draken's attacks, she flew swiftly to the spring. A transparent shard floated on the water's surface—the last butterfly soul shard. As it merged into her wings, patterns of all the butterfly fairies appeared on them, and silver light illuminated the entire palace.

"This... all the fairies' souls!" Draken stepped back in terror. "Impossible—you were supposed to be gone forever as flowers!"

"As long as there are flowers on the earth and hope in people's hearts, butterfly fairies will never vanish!" Yueli waved her wings, and a beam made of countless butterfly shadows shot toward Draken. The moment it struck him, the sealing chains wrapped around him again, pulling him slowly back into the moonstone.

As Draken was sealed away once more, the dark magic faded from the palace, and everything returned to normal. The old king took Yueli's hand gratefully. "Thank you, butterfly fairy—you saved our kingdom. From now on, the Silver Star Flower Field shall be a sacred place, protected forever!"

Yueli shook her head with a smile. "I did not save the kingdom alone—it was the power of all people with hope in their hearts. Now I must return to the field, use the fairies' power to bring it back to life, and let new butterfly fairies be born to guard this beautiful land!"

Since then, peace and prosperity returned to the Glimmer Kingdom. Whenever people passed the Silver Star Flower Field, they would see countless silver-glowing butterflies dancing among the flowers, their wings carrying the light of hope and telling the tale of the butterfly fairy. And Yueli, the great fairy, lived on in people's hearts forever as a symbol of courage and hope.
