Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2 : THE TUNNEL

The tunnel swallowed sound.

Kaera walked alone through the narrow passage, her footsteps echoing against walls carved from ancient stone. Dried roots twisted along the surface like veins, pale and brittle. Faded glyphs lined the walls, their colors long stripped by time, illuminated only by the faint glow of luminescent fungi.

She had cleaned her katana. The blood was gone. But the weight in her chest remained, heavy and familiar.

She stopped.

Her hunter's instincts caught something. Soft. Subtle. The barest scrape of a boot against stone.

Tap..Tap..Tap...

Someone was following her.

Kaera's hand on the hilt. Her jaw tightened. Her thumb pressed against the guard, a small movement. Controlled. But her fingers trembled, just slightly.

Not now. Not today.

She had been hunting for weeks. Months. Even years. Every lead had turned to dust. Every demon she killed left her no closer to the truth. The answers she wanted, the ones about her father, about that night, they stayed buried. Always out of reach.

And now this.

"I told you not to follow me." Her voice echoed through the tunnel. Flat. Cold.

No reply. Only the drip of water from rotting roots.

"Show yourself. Now!" Her hand tightened on the hilt. Her knuckles were white.

From behind a curtain of crawling roots, Eira emerged. Her hands were empty. Her emerald eyes studied Kaera with calm curiosity, searching for something behind the mask of coldness.

"I mean no harm. I just want to know who you really are." Eira's voice was quiet. Gentle.

"Because I feel like..we're not that different."

Kaera's jaw tightened. She could feel it. The heat at the back of her skull. The pressure building behind her eyes. This elf stood in front of her, looking at her like she was something to be understood.

A bitter smile twisted across her face.

"You want to know who I am?" Her voice dropped. "Fine. Let my katana speak."

SCHLING.

The blade left its sheath.

Kaera lunged. Fast. Too fast.

Eira barely threw herself sideways. The katana carved through the space where her head had been. She rolled, came up low, and reached for her bow.

"Why the sudden?!"

Kaera didn't answer. Her next strike came lower. Eira jumped, the blade grazing her cloak. A strand of hair fell to the ground.

"You're not thinking straight!"

"Shut up."

Something stirred in Kaera's chest. It wasn't just anger. It was older. Darker. A rejection written into her blood. This elf's light was pressing against her demon side, like salt in the wound.

' She's not like the others. She's pure. Clean. Everything you're not.'

Kaera's vision reddened at the edges.

"Hey!" Eira shouted. "Your hand—"

Kaera looked down.

Her palm was bleeding. She had cut it without realizing. The blood hovered in the air. Trembling. Responding to something inside her.

KILL.

Kaera attacked relentlessly. Every swing carried killing intent. No space to breathe.

Eira relied on agility. Narrowly evading each strike that nearly claimed her life.

"Hah!"

Eira slammed her foot against the ground. A pulse of green magic shot through the earth. Ancient roots stirred. They shot upward like whips, wrapping around Kaera's waist, her arms, her legs.

Kaera didn't move. She didn't need to.

The blood responded. Hardened into crimson crystals. Spinning. With a single thought, she sent them flying. The roots severed in an instant, falling to the ground in tattered pieces.

Kaera dropped to her knees. Free. But she wasn't moving. Her eyes locked onto the blood still flowing from her palm. Red. Warm. Familiar.

The tunnel faded. The walls dissolved.

She was eight years old again. Small hands. Blood everywhere. Her mother's blood.

"Run, Kaera. Please...don't look back."

The memory slammed into her suddenly. Hard. She gasped, but no air came. Her chest was too tight. Her head was too full of screaming.

She clutched her skull with her bloody hand. "Not now. Stop. Stop.."

Her mother's voice. Soft. Dying. "Don't let this broken face of mine be the last thing you remember."

' SHUT UP. SHUT UP. '

"Hey!" Eira's voice cut through the memory. "You're not there! Look at me!"

Let me go! I hate you! All of you!

Dark purple markings began crawling across Kaera's skin. Her eyes darkened, shifting from blue to deep crimson. The pressure in her chest exploded.

" You're fighting everything. Even yourself!"

"Shut up! You don't know anything!" But the voice that came out wasn't fully human. There was a rasp beneath it. A growl. Something hungry.

Eira's Echo Vein shrieked. The vibration she received wasn't the frequency of a girl anymore. It was something darker. Older. Violent.

Then Kaera looked up.

Her eyes weren't blue. They were crimson. Deep. Burning. Dark purple markings crawled across her neck, her arms, her cheeks, pulsing like living tattoos.

The ground beneath her began to fracture. Not from magic. From pressure.

The air grew heavy. Suffocating.

And then she moved.

One leap. The stone beneath her cracked. A shadow of crimson and rage.

Eira stumbled backward, raising her bow. But she wasn't fast enough.

The katana came horizontal.

ZAASS.

Eira's back hit the wall. Cold stone pressed against her shoulders. She had nowhere to run.

Then she felt it. Cold steel against her throat. Kaera's katana was there. Inches from her skin. Close enough that Eira could see her own reflection in the blade.

Kaera stood before her. The katana trembled in her grip, vibrating violently. Her teeth were clenched so hard blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. The veins along her arm bulged, straining, fighting against something unseen.

Eira didn't move. She didn't blink. She stared into Kaera's burning crimson eyes.

And in that moment, the Echo Vein reaced deeper than sound. It caught something else. A fragment. A memory.

A little girl crying in terror. A mother falling, her arms still reaching. A sorrowful face of a father as he dragged into the darkness.

Eira understood. She drew a slow, careful breath.

"You just want him back," she said softly. "Don't you?"

Kaera's blade froze. The crimson in her eyes flickered. Her grip on the katana loosened. Her knees buckled.

She didn't fall. But she swayed. Her breath came in ragged gasps, and her eyes were wide, unfocused, as though she had just woken from a nightmare.

"Get away from me." Kaera's voice broke. "I'll kill you."

"No, you won't."

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do." Eira stepped closer. "Because I saw you in that memory. You were just a child, carrying that pain ever since."

Kaera's katana was still held high. Her blade was still inches from Eira's throat. But her hand was shaking.

"Stop looking at me like that." Her voice cracked. "I'm not something to be saved."

"I'm not trying to save you," Eira said. "I'm trying to stand beside you."

The words hung in the air.

Kaera's blade lowered. Not slowly. Not with control. It dropped. The tip struck the stone floor with a dull clang. Her hand fell to her side, empty.

The demonic markings on her skin began to fade. The red in her vision receded. Her chest was still heavy, but the pressure was gone. Crushed. Dissolved.

She stared at the stone floor for a long time. When she spoke, her voice was quiet. Hollow.

"...I don't need anyone."

"Maybe not," Eira said. "But you don't have to be alone."

Kaera didn't answer. She didn't look up. She didn't tell Eira to leave either.
