Chapter 1 - THE EMBER HEART HEIST

Chapter 1: The Gutter and the Gold

The rain in the lower district of Oakhaven didn't wash things clean; it just turned the soot into a thick, black sludge.

Kaelen stood in the shadows of a collapsing archway, his hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of a sword that was no longer there. Two years ago, he had been the Commander of the Crimson Guard, draped in gold-leaf armor. Today, he wore a hooded cloak that smelled of cheap ale and desperation.

"You're late, Captain," a voice honeyed with mischief drifted from the rooftops.

Kaelen looked up. Perched on a gargoyle was Nyra—a thief whose name was whispered in every tavern and cursed in every palace. She hopped down, landing silently in the mud, her violet eyes glowing with a faint, illegal magical hum.

"I'm not a Captain anymore," Kaelen growled, stepping into the light. "And you're supposed to be in the Iron Keep. I personally locked the door."

Nyra smirked, adjusting the leather straps of her gear. "Locking the door is easy, Kael. It's the staying inside that's boring. But enough with the nostalgia. Do you want the Ember Heart or not?"

The Impossible Task

The Ember Heart wasn't just a jewel; it was a condensed sun. Legend said it could rewrite a person's history. For Kaelen, it was a chance to undo the betrayal that had cost him his honor. For Nyra, it was a payday big enough to buy a kingdom—or burn one down.

"The gala starts at midnight," Nyra continued, her tone turning sharp. "The High-Glass District is crawling with your former buddies. If they see your face, they won't arrest you. They'll execute you on sight."

"Then we'll just have to make sure they're looking at you instead," Kaelen retorted.

The Spark

Suddenly, the sound of rhythmic marching echoed through the alley. The rhythmic clank of Star-Steel armor—The Royal Inquisitors.

"Company!" Kaelen hissed, drawing a rusted dagger.

Nyra didn't look scared; she looked bored. She snapped her fingers, and a vial of glowing blue liquid appeared in her palm. "I hope you still remember how to run, 'Captain.' Because I'm about to blow the roof off this slum."

She smashed the vial at their feet. A massive surge of kinetic energy exploded outward.

"Hold your breath!" Nyra screamed.

As the blue fire engulfed the alley, Kaelen realized two things: he was about to commit high treason, and he was actually starting to enjoy it.
