Chapter 9 - ###CHAPTER NINE: When the World Turns to Watch

The scandal exploded the next morning.

It wasn't just whispers anymore.

It was screens.

Phones buzzed nonstop across campus. Group chats lit up. Social media feeds flooded with blurry photos, cropped videos, and captions that twisted the truth into something ugly and irresistible.

Billionaire CEO Claims University Student.

Love Triangle Turns Toxic on Campus.

Scholarship Girl Caught Between Power and Obsession.

I stared at my phone, hands shaking, stomach hollow.

Someone had uploaded a video from the student lounge the moment Ethan grabbed my arms. The moment Dominic stepped in. The moment his hand found mine.

The comments were cruel.

She wanted it.

Gold digger.

That CEO owns her now.

I felt sick.

By noon, the university administration requested a meeting with me.

Dominic was already waiting outside the building when I arrived.

He took one look at my face and his restraint fractured.

"Who did this?" he asked quietly.

"I don't know," I whispered. "But it's everywhere."

His jaw tightened. He removed his jacket and draped it over my shoulders like instinct, like ownership he no longer bothered hiding.

"You're not walking in there alone," he said.

"They asked for me, not"

"They asked for you," he interrupted, eyes darkening, "which means they get me."

Inside the boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocating.

The dean cleared his throat nervously. "Miss Blake, the university's reputation"

Dominic's hand came down on the table.

Not hard.

Just enough.

"Careful," he said calmly. "You're speaking about a woman who has done nothing wrong."

Silence.

"I won't allow her to be interrogated, blamed, or humiliated for other people's obsession," he continued. "If this institution fails to protect her, I will withdraw every investment and ensure the media understands exactly why."

The meeting ended in ten minutes.

Outside, my knees nearly buckled.

Dominic caught me instantly.

"That was reckless," I whispered.

"That was necessary," he replied, voice low. "You're being hunted, Aria. And I'm done pretending this is harmless."

Ethan chose that moment to lose control completely.

He was waiting outside the building.

His eyes were bloodshot. His clothes wrinkled like he hadn't slept. When he saw Dominic's arm around my shoulders, something inside him snapped.

"So it's true," Ethan said loudly. "You really belong to him now."

Students slowed. Phones lifted.

"Ethan, stop," I pleaded.

"You don't get to tell me to stop," he said, voice shaking. "You let him humiliate me. You let him parade you around like a prize."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Watch your mouth."

Ethan laughed broken, wild. "You think you won? You think money means she'll love you?"

He turned to me, eyes shining with tears and fury. "Tell them the truth. Tell them you didn't choose him because you love him tell them you were scared to say no."

The crowd murmured.

My chest constricted.

"That's not true," I said.

"Then why won't you look at me?" he demanded.

I did.

And that's when he knew.

His face collapsed.

"You love him," he whispered. "God… you really do."

Dominic's restraint shattered.

He moved fast placing himself fully in front of me, one arm behind me, shielding me from the crowd, from Ethan, from everything.

"You're done," Dominic said, voice ice-cold. "You don't get to weaponize her feelings because you can't accept rejection."

Ethan stepped closer anyway.

"You think she's safe with you?" he spat. "You think a man like you doesn't ruin everything he touches?"

Dominic leaned down, voice so low only Ethan could hear but I felt it like thunder.

"She's safer with me than she ever was with someone who confuses love with entitlement."

Ethan's breath hitched.

Security arrive but the damage was already done.

Someone had been livestreaming.

That night, I broke.

I sat on the edge of Dominic's penthouse couch, staring at nothing, chest aching like it might split open.

"I didn't want it to become this," I whispered.

Dominic knelt in front of me.

He took my hands carefully, like I might disappear if he moved too fast.

"I tried to stay in control," he admitted. "For you. But when the world turned on you… I don't regret any of it."

Tears spilled freely now. "I hurt him."

"Yes," Dominic said gently. "And he hurt you back. That doesn't make you cruel. It makes you human."

I pressed my forehead to his shoulder, finally collapsing.

"I'm so tired," I sobbed. "Everyone wants something from me."

His arms came around me firm, enclosing, undeniable.

"I want you to rest," he said softly. "And when you're ready… I want you to choose. Not out of fear. Not out of guilt. Only because you want me."

I pulled back just enough to look at him.

"And if I do?" I asked.

His eyes burned.

"Then I'll stop holding back."

The words sent a shiver through me.

Outside, the city buzzed with scandal, speculation, and judgment.

Inside, I was standing at the edge of a choice that would change everything.

And Ethan

Ethan was no longer just heartbroken.

He was dangerous.
