The city was already awake.
Traffic roared through the wide roads like a restless river of steel and light. Street vendors shouted their morning prices. Buses groaned under the weight of passengers.
But inside the old government archive building, silence ruled.
Arif stood beside the tall windows of the records office, watching the busy street below.
From the outside, the building looked ordinary.
Just another government department drowning in paperwork.
But Arif knew the truth now.
Somewhere inside this building… the roots of The Shadow Network were buried.
Behind him, Karim placed a file onto the dusty wooden table.
"You still think the evidence is here?" he asked quietly.
Arif didn't turn.
"I don't think," he said.
"I know."
Karim frowned.
"How?"
Arif finally turned toward him and held up the thin black notebook they had taken from Rashid Khan's mansion days ago.
The notebook was filled with coded numbers, land transactions, and names of companies that technically didn't exist.
But one entry had caught Arif's attention.
A short note written in red ink.
ARCHIVE – FLOOR B3
Karim crossed his arms.
"This building only has two underground floors."
Arif nodded slowly.
"That's what the public map says."
Karim stared at him.
"You think there's a hidden floor?"
Arif's voice dropped to a whisper.
"I'm certain."
The Hidden Records
Thirty minutes later they were inside the archive storage room.
Tall metal shelves filled the room from wall to wall.
Thousands of files.
Decades of forgotten documents.
Dust floated through the air like grey snow.
A single old fan rotated lazily on the ceiling.
Karim locked the door behind them.
"No one should come here for another hour," he said.
Arif walked between the shelves carefully, his eyes scanning the layout.
Then he stopped.
At the far end of the room stood a large metal cabinet bolted to the wall.
It looked newer than everything else around it.
Too new.
Karim followed Arif's gaze.
"You think that's it?"
Arif stepped closer.
The cabinet had no labels.
No handles.
Just a flat steel door.
Arif pressed his hand against it.
Cold.
Solid.
But something felt wrong.
He knocked on it twice.
CLANK.
The sound echoed deeper than it should have.
Karim raised an eyebrow.
"That's hollow."
Arif crouched and examined the base of the cabinet.
A thin line of dust marked the floor.
Except for one small section.
That part was clean.
As if the cabinet had been moved recently.
Arif smiled slightly.
"Help me."
Karim grabbed the side of the cabinet.
Together they pushed.
For a moment nothing happened.
Then—
SCRRRRRR
The cabinet slowly slid sideways.
Behind it appeared a narrow steel door embedded in the concrete wall.
Karim stared.
"Okay… that's definitely not on the building map."
The door had a small keypad.
And above it—
A camera.
Arif looked directly at it.
Somewhere in the city, someone might already be watching them.
Someone Was Watching
Twenty kilometers away, inside a glass office tower, a man leaned back in his chair.
Dozens of surveillance screens glowed across the wall in front of him.
On one of the monitors…
Arif and Karim stood in front of the hidden door.
The man smiled faintly.
His name was Director Hasan Ali.
Head of the Internal Security Directorate.
Officially, he protected the country from corruption and foreign threats.
Unofficially…
He was one of the architects of The Shadow Network.
A woman standing beside him spoke quietly.
"Sir… they found the door."
Hasan Ali didn't look worried.
"Of course they did."
The woman hesitated.
"Should we stop them?"
Hasan Ali slowly shook his head.
"No."
His eyes remained fixed on Arif's face on the screen.
"Let them go inside."
The woman looked confused.
"Why?"
Hasan Ali's smile widened slightly.
"Because sometimes the best way to destroy an enemy…"
He leaned forward.
"…is to let them discover the truth."
The Code
Back in the archive basement, Karim examined the keypad.
"Six digits," he said.
Arif flipped through Rashid Khan's notebook again.
There were dozens of numbers.
Dates.
Coordinates.
Transaction codes.
But one number appeared again and again.
071214
Karim looked skeptical.
"You're guessing?"
Arif shrugged.
"Every system has a pattern."
He typed the numbers.
0…7…1…2…1…4
The keypad beeped.
Red light.
"Wrong code."
Karim sighed.
"Great."
Arif didn't move.
He stared at the keypad again.
Then he noticed something.
The 7 key was slightly worn.
So was 2.
And 9.
He smiled slowly.
"Try again."
This time he typed:
2…7…9…7…2…9
For two seconds nothing happened.
Then—
CLICK
The steel door unlocked.
Karim exhaled.
"I hate when you're right."
Arif pushed the door open.
Cold air rushed out from the darkness below.
A narrow stairway descended into the earth.
Karim looked down.
"How far do you think that goes?"
Arif stepped inside.
"Only one way to find out."
Floor B3
The staircase ended in a long underground corridor.
White fluorescent lights flickered overhead.
The air smelled sterile.
Clean.
Too clean for an abandoned space.
Karim whispered.
"This place is still active."
Arif nodded.
On the wall beside them was a small metal sign.
ARCHIVE LEVEL B3 – RESTRICTED ACCESS
Karim laughed quietly.
"So the rumors were true."
Rows of sealed vault doors lined the hallway.
Each door had a number.
And a digital lock.
Arif walked slowly past them.
Then he stopped.
One vault door had a label.
PROJECT BLACK LEDGER
Karim's face darkened.
"I don't like the sound of that."
Arif typed the code again.
The door opened.
Inside the vault stood rows of black storage drives.
Hundreds of them.
Each labeled with dates.
Companies.
Government departments.
Karim picked up one drive.
His eyes widened.
"These are financial records."
Arif opened another case.
Contracts.
Bribery payments.
Secret land transfers.
Everything connected.
Politicians.
Corporations.
Military officers.
The entire country's corruption mapped out in perfect detail.
Karim whispered.
"This isn't just a network."
He looked at Arif.
"This is control."
Arif felt a cold chill.
The Shadow Network wasn't hiding from the system.
It was the system.
The Trap
Suddenly—
BEEP.
Red lights flashed across the ceiling.
Karim froze.
"That's not good."
A mechanical voice echoed through the hallway.
"Unauthorized access detected."
Arif's heart dropped.
"Alarm."
Heavy metal doors began slamming shut along the corridor.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
Karim grabbed the storage drive.
"We need to go!"
But the stairway door had already sealed.
Locked from above.
Karim cursed.
"We're trapped."
Footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
A tall man stepped into view.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Director Hasan Ali.
He clapped slowly.
"Well done."
Arif stared at him.
"You set this up."
Hasan Ali nodded.
"Of course."
Karim stepped forward angrily.
"You're part of the Shadow Network."
Hasan Ali laughed softly.
"Part?"
He looked around the vault.
"I built half of it."
Arif felt his stomach tighten.
"Why?"
Hasan Ali's eyes hardened.
"Because chaos needs control."
He gestured toward the drives.
"These records… these secrets… they keep powerful people obedient."
Karim shook his head.
"You're blackmailing the entire government."
Hasan Ali corrected him.
"No."
His voice turned cold.
"I'm stabilizing it."
Arif's fists tightened.
"You're destroying it."
For the first time, Hasan Ali's smile faded.
"Am I?"
He pressed a small remote in his hand.
Every vault door locked instantly.
"Tell me, Arif… if the public saw those files… if every secret deal and betrayal was exposed…"
He stepped closer.
"What do you think would happen to this country?"
Arif didn't answer.
Hasan Ali answered for him.
"Riots."
"Civil war."
"Collapse."
He looked at Karim.
"Sometimes truth is more dangerous than lies."
Karim glared at him.
"So you think you're the hero?"
Hasan Ali shrugged.
"History will decide."
Then he turned toward the hallway exit.
Guards began approaching behind him.
Armed.
Professional.
Hasan Ali paused before leaving.
"One last thing."
He looked back at Arif.
"You were never supposed to survive this investigation."
The guards raised their rifles.
"Goodbye."
The Escape
But Hasan Ali had made one mistake.
He underestimated Karim.
Before the guards could fire, Karim slammed the emergency power switch beside the vault door.
The lights exploded into darkness.
The entire underground floor plunged into blackness.
Gunshots echoed wildly.
Arif grabbed Karim.
"Move!"
They sprinted down the corridor.
Guards shouted behind them.
Flashlights cut through the dark.
Karim kicked open a maintenance panel along the wall.
"Here!"
Inside was a narrow service tunnel.
Barely wide enough to crawl.
They squeezed inside just as bullets hit the wall behind them.
Karim pulled the panel shut.
Silence.
Only their breathing filled the darkness.
Arif held the stolen storage drive tightly.
Karim whispered.
"Please tell me that thing is worth it."
Arif nodded.
His voice was calm.
"More than worth it."
Karim exhaled slowly.
"Good."
He looked down the dark tunnel ahead.
"Because after tonight…"
He smiled faintly.
"…this war just became real."
Arif stared into the darkness.
Somewhere above them, the Shadow Network still ruled in silence.
But now…
They had proof.
And the silent war had officially begun.
The tunnel was darker than Arif expected.
Dust and rust filled the narrow passage. Old electrical cables hung loosely from the ceiling, occasionally brushing against their heads as they crawled forward.
Karim moved first.
Arif followed closely behind him, holding the stolen storage drive tightly in his jacket.
Behind them, faint sounds echoed through the walls.
Boots.
Shouting voices.
Metal doors opening.
The guards were still searching.
Karim whispered without turning around.
"They'll check the tunnels."
Arif nodded even though Karim couldn't see him.
"Yeah."
"And when they do…"
Karim finished the sentence quietly.
"…we're dead."
They kept crawling.
The tunnel sloped slightly upward, leading deeper beneath the city.
Water dripped somewhere in the darkness.
Each drop echoed like a ticking clock.
Arif's mind raced.
They had what they needed.
Proof.
Real proof of the Shadow Network's operations.
But that proof also made them the most hunted men in the city.
After nearly ten minutes of crawling, the tunnel finally widened enough for them to stand.
Karim stretched his back painfully.
"Next time we investigate a secret conspiracy," he muttered, "remind me to choose one that doesn't involve crawling through rat tunnels."
Arif allowed a small smile.
But his eyes were serious.
"We're not finished yet."
Karim leaned against the wall.
"What do you mean? We got the data."
He pointed at the storage drive.
"That thing probably contains half the country's secrets."
Arif shook his head slowly.
"No."
Karim frowned.
"What?"
Arif looked down at the drive.
"This is only one piece."
Karim stared at him.
"You're kidding."
Arif's voice was quiet.
"Hasan Ali said something important."
Karim crossed his arms.
"Which part? The part where he tried to kill us?"
Arif ignored the sarcasm.
"He said he built half the Shadow Network."
Karim's expression slowly changed.
"…half."
Arif nodded.
"That means someone else built the other half."
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Then Karim exhaled slowly.
"Well that's fantastic."
He rubbed his face.
"So we're not fighting one monster."
Arif finished the thought.
"We're fighting two."
The Hidden Exit
At the end of the tunnel, they found a rusty ladder leading upward.
A small metal hatch blocked the way.
Karim climbed first.
He pushed gently.
The hatch didn't move.
Locked.
Karim whispered.
"Great."
Arif climbed up beside him.
He examined the edges carefully.
Then he noticed a small latch mechanism hidden inside the frame.
"Wait."
He pulled the latch.
The hatch slowly creaked open.
Fresh night air rushed inside.
Karim peeked out.
Above them was a narrow alley between two abandoned buildings.
Trash bins.
Broken streetlights.
Perfectly empty.
Karim climbed out first and helped Arif up.
They closed the hatch carefully.
For a moment they both stood there in silence, breathing the cool air.
The city lights glowed in the distance.
Traffic noise drifted through the night.
Karim looked at Arif.
"You realize Hasan Ali will lock down half the city by morning."
Arif nodded.
"He already has."
Karim scratched his head.
"So what's the plan now?"
Arif thought for a moment.
Then he said something unexpected.
"We find Rahman."
Karim blinked.
"Rahman?"
"Your old contact in cyber security?"
Arif nodded.
"If anyone can open this drive without triggering security protocols, it's him."
Karim sighed.
"Yeah… about that."
Arif looked at him.
"What?"
Karim hesitated.
Then he spoke slowly.
"Rahman disappeared last week."
Arif froze.
"Disappeared?"
Karim nodded.
"No calls. No messages."
"His apartment was empty."
Arif's stomach tightened.
"Do you think Hasan Ali took him?"
Karim shook his head slowly.
"That's the strange part."
"What?"
Karim looked around the alley cautiously.
"He vanished before we broke into the archive."
Arif felt a cold realization forming in his mind.
"That means…"
Karim finished the sentence.
"…someone else was already watching this case."
The Message
They walked carefully through the dark streets.
Arif kept checking behind them.
No cars following.
No footsteps.
But the feeling of being watched refused to leave.
After several blocks, they reached Karim's old jeep parked behind a closed shop.
Karim opened the door and sat inside.
Arif followed.
The engine started quietly.
For a few minutes they drove in silence.
Then something strange happened.
Arif's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He hesitated.
Karim noticed.
"Who is it?"
Arif answered.
"Hello?"
Static filled the line.
Then a distorted voice spoke.
Slow.
Calm.
"You shouldn't have taken the drive."
Arif's grip tightened.
"Who is this?"
The voice ignored the question.
"You have no idea what you've uncovered."
Karim glanced at him nervously.
Arif turned on speaker mode.
"Are you with Hasan Ali?"
A quiet chuckle came from the phone.
"Hasan Ali?"
The voice sounded amused.
"He's just one piece of the machine."
Arif felt his heart beat faster.
"Then who are you?"
The voice paused for a moment.
Then it said something that made both men freeze.
"I'm the one who built the other half."
Karim slammed the brakes.
The jeep screeched to a stop.
Arif's voice hardened.
"What do you want?"
The voice answered calmly.
"To help you."
Karim whispered.
"This is definitely a trap."
Arif ignored him.
"Why would you help us?"
The voice replied:
"Because Hasan Ali broke the rules."
"What rules?"
Silence filled the line for several seconds.
Then the voice spoke again.
"The Shadow Network was never meant to control the country."
"It was meant to protect it."
Karim shook his head.
"Yeah right."
Arif leaned forward.
"Then meet us."
The voice responded immediately.
"Tomorrow night."
"Old Riverside Station."
"Come alone."
The call ended.
The phone screen went dark.
Karim slowly looked at Arif.
"Well…"
He exhaled heavily.
"…that was terrifying."
Arif stared out the windshield.
The city lights reflected in his eyes.
"This just got bigger."
Karim laughed nervously.
"Bigger?"
He pointed at the drive again.
"We already stole the most dangerous data in the country."
Arif's voice was quiet.
"Yes."
"But now…"
He looked at Karim.
"…we're about to meet the man who created the Shadow Network."
Karim leaned back in his seat.
"Fantastic."
Then he started the engine again.
"Let's just hope he doesn't try to kill us too."
Arif looked down at the storage drive one more time.
Inside that small device were secrets powerful enough to destroy governments.
But something told him…
The real danger was still waiting in the shadows.
And tomorrow night…
They would finally meet it.
