Chapter 48 - Chapter 48 – The Truth Beneath the Lotus

Rain continued through the night.

By dawn, little remained of the inn but blackened beams and drifting smoke.

The city had already begun to tell its own version of the story.

Some said it had been an accident.

Others whispered about assassins.

No one knew the truth.

Li Xuan and Shen Lian rode in silence until the city disappeared behind them.

An abandoned mountain shrine stood hidden among towering pines, forgotten by travelers and long reclaimed by nature.

Its roof sagged with age.

The stone lanterns were cracked.

For now, it was safe.

Li Xuan tethered the horses while Shen Lian examined the surroundings with practiced caution.

"No tracks," Shen Lian said.

"We have a few hours."

Li Xuan nodded.

"A few hours is enough."

Inside the shrine, rain tapped softly against broken roof tiles.

Neither spoke for a long time.

The silence was different now.

Not awkward.

Simply heavy.

Li Xuan finally looked across the room.

"You recognized that man."

Shen Lian didn't pretend otherwise.

"Yes."

"Who was he?"

After a long pause, Shen Lian answered.

"His name was Han Rui."

"He trained beside me."

"You said 'was.'"

"The person I knew no longer exists."

Li Xuan waited.

He had learned that silence often revealed more than questions.

Eventually, Shen Lian continued.

"We were children."

"There were twelve of us."

"Twelve?"

"Twelve taken from different places."

"Some were bought."

"Some were stolen."

"Some were simply... forgotten."

His voice never trembled.

That somehow made the words heavier.

"We weren't taught to dance."

"We were taught to survive."

"The dancing came later."

"It made people lower their guard."

Li Xuan listened without interrupting.

"Our instructors believed beauty was another weapon."

"A smile."

"A performance."

"A graceful movement."

"Anything that made someone underestimate you."

He looked at the silver bells hanging from his sleeve.

"Even these."

Li Xuan frowned.

"So the bells..."

"Weren't my choice."

Shen Lian touched one gently.

"They belonged to my mentor."

The words lingered in the quiet shrine.

"My mentor believed we could still choose who we became."

"He was wrong."

For the first time since they met...

Pain crossed Shen Lian's face.

Small.

Brief.

But unmistakable.

"He refused an order."

"They executed him."

Li Xuan's chest tightened.

"In front of everyone."

"I was forced to watch."

Shen Lian closed his eyes.

"Our master said..."

He repeated the words exactly as they had been spoken years ago.

"'Attachment is hesitation.'"

"'Hesitation is death.'"

"'Remember this feeling.'"

"'One day it will save your life.'"

The shrine fell silent again.

"I remembered."

"I survived."

"My mentor didn't."

Li Xuan finally understood.

Every time Shen Lian had walked away...

Every time he insisted they should end things...

Every time he disappeared...

It had never been because he didn't care.

It was because he cared too much.

Li Xuan stepped closer.

Not close enough to corner him.

Just close enough to be heard.

"You've been protecting me."

Shen Lian gave a faint, tired smile.

"I've been trying."

"You think staying beside me will get me killed."

"I know it will."

Li Xuan shook his head.

"No."

"You don't know."

"You only believe it because someone wanted you to."

Shen Lian looked away.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't certain.

Outside—

A twig snapped.

Both men reached for their weapons at the same time.

Not enemies.

A messenger.

The young man dropped to one knee.

"Your Highness."

Li Xuan stiffened.

Very few people knew where to find him.

"What is it?"

"The capital has changed."

"Advisor Chen has convinced the Emperor to begin a secret investigation."

"Into what?"

The messenger swallowed.

"You."

The shrine became deathly quiet.

The messenger continued carefully.

"They're reopening reports from the southern district."

"They've collected witness statements."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"They've recovered one of your discarded throwing knives."

Li Xuan's expression darkened.

It wasn't enough to prove anything.

But it was enough to start asking dangerous questions.

After the messenger departed, neither man spoke.

Rain continued to fall outside.

Finally, Shen Lian broke the silence.

"You have to return."

Li Xuan looked at him.

"If you stay away much longer..."

"They'll know."

"And if I return?"

"They'll watch every step."

Li Xuan gave a quiet laugh.

"They're already doing that."

Shen Lian stepped toward the doorway.

Mist drifted through the mountain trees.

"The next time we meet..."

"It may be as enemies."

Li Xuan answered immediately.

"No."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"How?"

Li Xuan met his eyes.

"Because I've already chosen my side."

For a moment, neither moved.

The distance between them felt impossibly small.

Shen Lian reached up slowly...

Not to touch Li Xuan.

But to remove one silver bell from his own sleeve.

He placed it in Li Xuan's hand.

"If we become separated..."

"...keep this."

Li Xuan closed his fingers around the bell.

"I'll return it."

Shen Lian's expression softened almost imperceptibly.

"I hope you do."

Far away in the capital...

Advisor Chen stood before a wall covered in maps, reports, and names.

He picked up a brush.

A single red line connected two names.

Fourth Prince Li Xuan.

Shen Lian.

Chen studied the connection for a long moment.

Then quietly said,

"So that's what you're protecting."

He extinguished the lantern.

Outside, thunder rolled across the palace.

The hunt had truly begun.
