Charlotte Shaw was asleep, nestled in Felix Preston's arms, but Felix himself was wide awake.
He gazed at the woman sleeping in his arms, his heart feeling as if it were stuffed with cotton, making it difficult to breathe, impossible to calm down.
Charlotte Shaw hadn't said a single word about how agonizing her days of captivity under Willow Quincy had been. But from her gaunt frame and desolate eyes, he could clearly sense the despair and breakdown she must have endured.
She always focused on the good and hid the bad. As long as she wasn't completely broken, she would never stoop to burdening others with her suffering.
"Mmmph..."
She must have been having a nightmare, for she suddenly frowned and whimpered in her sleep.
"Shh..." Felix quickly patted her back, soothing her in a low voice. "It's okay, sweetie, don't be afraid. I'm here. Felix is here."
The moment she heard Felix's name, her tightly furrowed brow instantly smoothed out.
