Spring had arrived, but the weather in Emberfall was still cold.
A winter wind stripped the last few leaves from the trees lining the road. A withered, yellow leaf swirled through the air and landed on Nathan Trenton's shoulder.
Instantly, a chill shot up from the soles of Nathan Trenton's feet, and his blood ran cold.
He stared, stunned, at the young woman before him. Her skin was so fair it seemed to glow, making her look like a precious porcelain doll that might shatter at the slightest touch.
"You..."
Nathan Trenton opened his mouth.
Looking at Chloe Sinclair, he was at a loss for a moment, unsure whether to offer words of comfort or to voice his outrage on her behalf.
He'd seen the couple's vile expressions clearly. He couldn't imagine what kind of environment Chloe Sinclair must have grown up in.
"I'm fine." Chloe Sinclair's expression was placid, her words just as devoid of emotion.
