Chapter 2 - Chapter 1 — The Awakening

The village square of Ember Hollow was usually never this crowded.

Nearly every villager had gathered around the stone platform at the center of the clearing. Hunters stood beside farmers. Children whispered nervously while parents watched with quiet anticipation.

At the center of it all stood ten stone pillars.

Each pillar rose taller than a man and was carved with glowing marks running from one to ten.

Kael stared at them.

He had seen the pillars before, but today they felt different.

Important.

Today they would decide the future of every child standing in the square.

The man in ceremonial robes stepped forward.

The Awakening Officiant.

Even standing still, he radiated a quiet pressure that made the air feel heavier.

Kael had heard whispers that the man was a Knight-level cultivator—someone powerful enough to command Essence Rings and battle spirit beasts.

To the villagers, that was almost unimaginable strength.

The officiant raised his hand and the crowd slowly fell silent.

"Today," he said, his voice calm but carrying easily across the square, "the children of Ember Hollow will awaken their Sigils."

Several of the younger kids shifted nervously.

Kael felt his stomach tighten.

Every human in the world carried a dormant Sigil from birth.

But it only awakened once.

At the age eight.

The officiant gestured toward the pillars.

"First, the Talent Pillars will measure your resonance with essence."

He placed a palm against the first pillar.

Soft light spread through the carved markings.

"These marks represent the scale of potential," he explained.

"One… to ten."

Murmurs rippled through the watching villagers.

Even reaching five was considered respectable.

Seven or higher was extremely rare in frontier villages like Ember Hollow.

"Step forward," the officiant said.

The first child approached the pillars.

A nervous boy named Ren.

He placed his hand against the stone.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the third mark glowed faintly.

The pillar pulsed once.

"Three," the officiant said.

A few villagers nodded approvingly.

Not exceptional.

But not poor either.

Ren hurried back to the crowd, relief written across his face.

One by one, the children stepped forward.

A girl reached four.

Another boy reached two.

Someone even reached five, drawing surprised whispers from the crowd.

Kael waited near the back of the line, his pulse hammering in his ears.

Every result made his turn feel closer.

Finally the officiant looked toward him.

"Kael."

The square felt suddenly very quiet.

Kael stepped forward.

He could feel the eyes of the entire village on him.

Even his father stood silently near the edge of the crowd.

Waiting.

Kael reached the pillar.

The stone was cool beneath his hand.

For a moment…

Nothing happened.

Then the first mark lit.

A soft glow.

The second mark followed.

Then the third.

The light climbed steadily up the pillar.

Four.

Five.

The crowd murmured.

Six.

Someone gasped.

Seven.

Now the entire pillar was glowing brightly.

The villagers stared in awe.

Even the officiant's expression sharpened.

Very few frontier children ever reached seven.

But the light didn't stop.

It climbed higher.

Eight.

A sharp intake of breath spread through the crowd.

The glow reached the ninth mark—

Then stopped.

The pillar pulsed with brilliant light before fading slowly.

Silence filled the square.

Nine.

The officiant studied Kael carefully.

"A resonance of nine," he said.

"That is… remarkable."

Whispers exploded among the villagers.

Kael barely heard them.

His heart was pounding too loudly.

The officiant turned toward the final ritual circle carved into the stone platform.

"Now," he said, "we awaken the Sigil."

Kael stepped into the circle.

The officiant raised his hands.

Energy gathered in the air.

A faint glow spread across the ground as ancient symbols lit one by one.

Kael felt warmth spreading through his chest.

Then heat.

Then something deeper.

Something inside him was waking up.

The heat within him surged.

Not like fire.

Like a forge.

Something ancient and powerful stirred in his core.

Kael clenched his fists as the energy rose through his body.

The air around him shimmered.

The crowd leaned forward.

Waiting.

Watching.

Behind Kael…

Light suddenly erupted into existence.

A shape formed.

Massive.

Radiant.

The outline of a lion made of blazing gold.

Its mane burned like sunlight.

Gasps filled the square.

"A lion Sigil…"

But before the whispers could settle—

Shadow flowed through the golden light.

Dark scales rippled beneath the mane.

A long serpentine form coiled through the lion's body like living eclipse shadow.

The Sigil roared silently.

Lion and serpent intertwined.

Sunlight and abyss.

The image hovered behind Kael like a living spirit.

The crowd fell completely silent.

No one had ever seen a Sigil like it.

Even the officiant stared.

Then he spoke slowly.

"…An Eclipse Sunlion."

Kael stood frozen in the center of the circle.

The heat within him was no longer like a forge.

It was like an erupting volcano .

And somewhere deep inside it…

Something powerful had just begun to awaken.
