Fred and George arrived the following morning.
They came with the specific energy of people who had heard something interesting and had waited as long as they were capable of waiting, which was approximately sixteen hours.
Fred came through the door, looked at Sirius, and said: 'You're Padfoot.'
Sirius looked at them. 'Where did you hear that name?'
'We have our sources,' George said.
'You have a map and you overheard my conversation with Moony as you entered the floo,' Sirius said.
Fred and George went still in the way Ron had seen before — the attention of people who had just discovered that the person across from them knew something they didn't expect the person to know, and who were simultaneously pleased and recalibrating. They sat down on the floor near the fire, which was where Fred and George always sat when a conversation was about to become interesting, and looked at Sirius with the expression they used when they were assessing the probability of obtaining information.
'The map,' Fred said carefully, 'is a device of considerable sophistication.'
'I know,' Sirius said. 'I helped make it.'
The silence that followed had the quality of a pause before something reorganized itself.
Ron sat back in his chair and took a photograph of Sirius's face, and Fred and George's faces, and did not say anything because there was nothing to add and everything to observe.
What followed was two hours. Sirius talked about the map — how it had been built, what it had taken, the specific magic of the Animagus tracking and the Homonculous Charm and the way the four of them had argued about the naming scheme for months before settling on the one that was there. Lupin filled in the parts Sirius underplayed, which were the parts that required the most skill and which Sirius attributed to collective effort with the reflexive modesty of someone who had always been better than he admitted. Fred and George asked questions with the focused intelligence of people who had been using a piece of magic for two years without fully understanding it and were now getting the architecture for the first time.
'The notes,' Fred said, at some point in the second hour. 'You had working notes. For the construction.'
'Somewhere,' Sirius said. 'In storage. I haven't gone through everything from — before.'
'If you find them,' George said, 'we would be very interested in reviewing them. Academically.'
'For research purposes,' Fred agreed.
'You want to build a better one,' Sirius said.
Fred and George said nothing, which was confirmation.
Sirius looked at Lupin. Lupin made a gesture that communicated something between 'this is your decision' and 'I am mildly interested in what happens next.'
'If I find the notes,' Sirius said, 'I'll consider it. In exchange for the map itself now. It should be Harry's.'
The negotiation that followed took approximately four minutes and produced a handshake. Ron photographed the handshake.
After Fred and George had gone — with the specific energized quality of people who had arrived for a conversation and were leaving with a project — Ron waited until Sirius and Lupin were in the kitchen, and said, quietly, so only Harry could hear:
'The map shows everyone in the castle. By name. Every person, every room, every passage.'
Harry looked at him.
'That's going to be useful,' Ron said.
Harry was quiet for a moment, turning this over. Then he nodded, with the nod he had developed over the autumn — the one that did not ask how Ron knew things, just filed the information and used it.
'Yes,' Harry said. 'It is.'
The Patronus lesson happened on the afternoon of the twenty-seventh, in the living room of the flat with the boggart-Dementor in a battered trunk that Lupin had brought with the matter-of-fact preparedness of someone who traveled with a boggart the way other people traveled with an umbrella.
Harry went first.
The boggart emerged and the room changed — the temperature dropped and the light went flat and the quality of a Dementor's presence arrived in the air like something that had been waiting. Ron felt it at the edges, distant and cold, the way you might register weather through glass. His Occlumency was not a technique he applied; it was structural, present the way bone was present, and the Dementor's reach moved against it and found nothing to grip. He was aware of the cold. It did not enter him.
Harry was not shielded.
He heard it before he saw it — the sharp intake of breath, the way Harry's posture changed, the posture of someone whose body was reacting to something their mind had not finished processing. Harry cast through it with the determination he brought to everything that mattered and produced a silver mist that drove the boggart back without fully resolving. It was good work. For someone learning the spell without its completion, casting under genuine pressure, it was genuinely impressive.
Lupin guided him through three attempts, each one denser than the last, and by the third Harry's silver had the purposeful quality of something building toward a shape it had not yet reached. The boggart retreated to its trunk.
Then Lupin looked at Ron.
'Your turn,' Lupin said.
The boggart emerged. The cold came — distant, registering at the surface, finding no way in.
Ron cast.
The silver came out immediately and strong — denser than his October practice, denser than last week, the weight of three months of accumulated work visible in the quality of it. It moved with direction. At its center, for a moment, the suggestion of form: large, low to the ground in its movement, the light gathering at the outline of something that had not yet committed to its full shape. It lasted five seconds before dispersing.
The boggart retreated.
Lupin closed the trunk. He looked at the space where the Patronus had been with the careful attention of someone taking inventory.
'The Dementor didn't reach you,' he said. Not an accusation. An observation.
'No,' Ron said.
Lupin nodded once, with the quality of someone filing a fact they had already suspected and were now confirming. He did not ask how or why. 'The silver is strong,' he said. 'The form is there — or close to there. But it hasn't resolved.' He looked at Ron. 'What memory are you using?'
Ron told him — not the full architecture of it, but the shape: layered, several things at once, the people and the places that constituted what he had chosen and what had chosen him.
Lupin was quiet for a moment. 'It's a good memory,' he said. 'Possibly too broad. The Patronus responds to something specific and certain — a single point of complete conviction, not a collection of warmth. What you have is powerful but diffuse. The form can't lock onto it because it's being asked to represent several things simultaneously.' He paused. 'You're close. The silver tells me you're close. But the memory needs sharpening, not replacing.'
'How do I sharpen it?' Ron said.
'Time, mostly,' Lupin said. 'And practice under pressure — not because the pressure is necessary for the spell, but because pressure strips away everything that isn't essential and shows you what the core of the memory actually is. Once or twice a month, my office, we use the trunk. You'll find the memory clarifying itself over several sessions.' He paused. 'And when it resolves — when the form is fully corporeal and stable — we move to the advanced work.'
'Advanced forms,' Ron said.
'The corporeal Patronus is not the end of it,' Lupin said. 'There are uses for a fully realized Patronus that go well beyond a defensive cast. Communication. Guidance. Things that become possible once the form is stable and you understand it.' He looked at Ron with the specific quality he had brought to the boggart lesson in September, the one that acknowledged something larger than the immediate conversation. 'I think you'll find the advanced work interesting.'
'I think so too,' Ron said.
Sirius was watching from the armchair with quiet attention. Harry was looking at the space where the silver had been.
'January,' Lupin said. 'Second week. My office.'
Ron nodded.
He took a photograph of the battered trunk, closed on the floor of the flat, before Lupin took it away.
