Chapter 31 - Chapter 30 - Visions

That night, Travis dragged himself back to his room. As he opened the door, Lance was on his side with his arm around Travis' shoulder.

"So, you spent a whole day just you and Vanessa. How'd it go?"

"Trust me, not the way you think. First Sergeant kicked the shit out of me, then made me work out the rest of the day."

"Oh. Well how was it fighting fighting the first ranked in the company?"

"Let me tell you, it wasn't even a fight. He kicked the shit out of me. It was over in three punches, and not one of them was thrown by me."

"Are you serious? I thought you could see the future."

"It didn't help. He was so fast I couldn't even react. He said that's what we are working to fix. So that it doesn't happen on the battlefield."

"Well, we are going to the bar tonight, do you want to come?"

"Nah man, I'm going to shower, then sleep so I can get up and do this again tomorrow. And for many days after that."

"Alright, well if you change your mind, you know where to find us."

With that, he walked off towards the stairs and Travis went inside. After cleaning up, he collapsed on the bed, asleep before his head hit the pillow.

As Travis opened his eyes, he had the same odd feeling he'd had when he saw the visions of his friend's deaths. At first it was a black abyss, then the first scene exploded into view.

He saw himself in a hallway, with people whose faces he couldn't see.

"Alright, we've got to go, see you all soon."

He heard himself say, and a portion of the group broke off, heading down the hallway. Then one of the ones who stayed reached out and caught Travis' arms.

"You can't go on this mission." The man said. "If you go on this mission, you'll die."

The vision Travis turned and looked the man in the eyes for a moment, then he responded.

"I know. Don't worry, everything will be fine."

"Fine?" The man said almost shouting. "How can this possibly be fine?"

"I've known for a long time how I'd die." As he said this, the vision Travis looked directly at the real one, although it didn't seem like he really saw him. "As I said, everything will work out, so stop worrying so much."

As he turned to head down the hall, the scene changed. He saw Rebecca, alone in a room sitting on a plush looking chair, turned towards a window overlooking a beautiful view of a city. She had a whiskey glass in her hand and a bottle on a table to her right.

She sighed and set the glass on the table, rubbing tears away.

"Why me?" She said in a quiet, shaky voice.

The empty room said nothing back. And suddenly she jumped to her feet, grabbed the bottle and hurled it into the left wall. She stood there silently, a moment, tears starting to fall more freely, then the scene changed.

Travis stood over a ruined city. No building was left untouched. Most were cut down to only a few feet tall. All of the free space was occupied by corpses. Soldiers from all four powers as well as civilians. The elderly mangled and torn apart. Parents clutching their children. Trying in vain to keep them alive. Couples clinging to each other, holding on to their partners even in death.

The scene was eerily silent. No screams. No sounds of fighting. No burning fires or collapsing buildings. Just a still, empty silence and the wind occasionally running unobstructed through the ruins, carrying the scent of death to vultures overhead. Then the scene changed.

Travis stood before a red portal. It was about the 8 feet tall, and in the middle of a city. A man and a woman ran out of it, and it closed behind them. They both had jet black hair, but his eyes were red, while hers were blue. They looked around, with what looked like fear in their eyes.

The man grabbed the woman's hand and ran down an alleyway. Soon after they left, an emergency shelter siren blared, and a voice announced that all civilians should head to the nearest shelter immediately. The scene changed one last time.

Travis saw the first sergeant standing on a hill, with a long sword in his hands. He shouted at the top of his lungs.

"Come on you bastards! Come get me!"

Then a horde of soldiers decended upon him. Travis was horrified as he saw dozens of soldiers fall before the blade. The first sergeant laughed so maniacally that Travis thought for sure he had gone insane, but when he looked into the man's eyes what he saw was a barely contained fury, and the soldiers were nothing more than punching bags to vent his rage on.

After what felt like hours but was less than 10 minutes, the first sergeant was covered in blood and surrounded by corpses.

Suddenly a voice called out from behind him. "Had enough yet?"

"Not even remotely. Killing these insignificant bugs means nothing to me."

"Well then, I have some good news for you, we found them."

"Lets go then. No point in delaying further."

Travis shot upright, breathing heavily. He was covered in sweat and his throat was so dry he felt like he could drink an entire lake and still be thirsty.

He got up and drank 3 glasses of water, then tried to find any of his visions of the future.

"Why can't I do it?" He asked the silent room. "When are these visions supposed to take place?"

The room held no answers.
