I sighed, ignoring the sharp, protesting twinge in my lower back as I tried to pull myself up against the headboard. The heavy silk sheets felt like leads weight, but the urge to cover my bare skin was stronger. I grabbed a soft, oversized tunic from the edge of the bed and dragged it over my head, my hands still covered in the sticky, drying residue of the ultrasound gel.
The human doctor, however, was in no state to let me rest. Her face was still a stark, ghostly white, but her professional instincts seemed to have kicked into overdrive out of sheer survival panic. She was frantically scribbling on a notepad, her pen scratching violently against the paper.
