Eliana burst out of the library, her lungs burning as she inhaled the sharp night air. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear. As she stumbled into the dim glow of a flickering streetlamp, a familiar figure stepped out from the darkness. It was Marcus, the one person she trusted above all others.
"Marcus! Thank God... you're here," she gasped, her legs nearly giving way. But Marcus didn't move to catch her. The warm, protective smile she knew was gone, replaced by a cold, vacant stare. His eyes, usually bright, seemed swallowed by an unnatural gloom.
"I knew you'd find the scroll, Eliana. But your greed in keeping it for yourself... that was your first mistake," he said. His voice was a stranger's—devoid of the kindness that had once been her anchor.
"What are you talking about? We're in this together!" she cried, taking a step back.
Marcus slowly drew a slender, silver dagger from beneath his cloak. Etched into the hilt was the 'Twin Serpents'—the dreaded emblem of the Everdark nobility. "I promised to protect you, yes. But protecting you means delivering your power to those who can actually control it. You were always just a vessel, Eliana. A beautiful, tragic bird carrying wings too heavy for its flight."
The realization hit her harder than any physical blow. The man she would have died for was the very architect of her undoing. Betrayal tasted like ash in her mouth. But from that hollow ache, a new, violent energy surged.
"Forgive me, Eliana, but I need your Shadow Wings," Marcus hissed as he lunged forward, the silver blade aimed for her heart.
In that heartbeat, the shadows Eliana had seen in the library erupted from her back. Two massive, obsidian wings tore through her coat, shimmering with dark stardust. Her eyes flared a brilliant, predatory violet. With a single wave of her hand, a shockwave of dark energy sent Marcus flying across the cobblestones. Yet, the air grew colder. A thick, oily black mist began to descend from the sky, taking the shape of something far more ancient and dangerous than Marcus.
Who was Marcus truly working for? And what was the monstrous entity forming in the mist?
