Chapter 61 - The Weight of Letting Go

The vineyard felt different now.

Not because Elena was gone.

But because she wasn't.

Daniel stood at the entrance again the next night.

And the night after that.

But this time—

He said nothing.

No "I'm here."

No calling her name.

Just silence.

Because now he knew—

Every word could pull her back.

And every moment she stayed…

Came with a cost.

His hands tightened at his sides.

"I could just say it," he whispered to himself.

"One word… and she'd come back."

The thought hurt.

Because it was true.

Behind him, footsteps approached softly.

Maria.

"You came again," she said gently.

Daniel gave a faint, tired smile.

"Yeah."

She stood beside him, looking at the quiet stone entrance.

"You haven't called her, have you?"

He shook his head.

Maria nodded slowly.

"That must be harder than calling her."

Daniel let out a quiet breath.

"You have no idea."

Silence stretched between them.

Then Maria spoke again.

"She told you the truth, didn't she?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Every time she comes back… it weakens everything."

Maria closed her eyes briefly.

"I thought so."

He looked at her.

"So what do I do?" he asked quietly. "Pretend she's gone? Just… move on?"

Maria shook her head.

"No," she said softly.

"Then what?"

She hesitated.

"You live," she said.

Daniel let out a bitter laugh.

"That's it?"

"It's not 'just' living," Maria replied. "It's choosing not to break what she sacrificed herself to protect."

The words hit hard.

Daniel looked back at the entrance.

"She said she'd find another way."

Maria smiled faintly.

"Then trust her."

He stayed silent.

Because trust—

Didn't make it easier.

But it gave him something to hold onto.

Later that night—

Daniel returned alone.

One last time.

The sky above was clear.

Filled with quiet stars.

He stepped closer to the stone.

Took a breath.

And whispered—

"I'm here."

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

And for a second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

A faint glow.

So soft.

So familiar.

Daniel closed his eyes, pain and relief crashing together.

"I'm sorry," he said quickly. "I shouldn't have—"

The light flickered.

Gentle.

Not forming.

Not pulling.

Just… there.

Listening.

Daniel swallowed hard.

"I won't do this again," he whispered.

The glow pulsed once.

"I just needed to know…" his voice broke slightly, "…that you're still there."

The light shimmered.

Warm.

Steady.

Answering.

Daniel took a slow step back.

"I trust you," he said quietly.

The glow softened.

And slowly—

Faded.

This time—

He didn't try to stop it.

Didn't call her name.

He just stood there.

And let her go.

For real.

But not forever.
