Chapter 21 - Into The Tunnels

The storm arrived just after midnight.

Rain tapped against the bookstore windows, and distant thunder rolled across the hills of Seravalle.

Elena stood at the table, staring at the old map.

"Tonight," she said quietly.

Daniel looked up. "You're serious."

"If we wait, someone else might find the tunnels first."

Or seal them forever.

Daniel studied the map again.

"The entrance should still be in the old Moretti cellar."

Elena grabbed two flashlights and an old lantern from the storage room. The beams cut thin lines through the darkness.

They crossed the silent town and reached the abandoned vineyard at the edge of Seravalle.

The cellar door creaked when Daniel pushed it open.

The smell of old wood and damp stone filled the air.

They stepped down the narrow stairs.

The cellar looked just as Elena remembered from childhood stories — rows of empty wine racks and dust-covered barrels.

But the back wall was different.

Daniel brushed away loose dirt and cobwebs.

Behind an old wooden rack was a stone archway.

Half-buried.

"Found it," he whispered.

Together they moved the rack aside.

The tunnel entrance yawned open like a dark mouth in the stone.

Cold air drifted out.

Older air.

Heavier.

Elena felt a chill run through her.

"Are you sure about this?" Daniel asked.

She nodded.

"If Lucia's truth is down there… someone deserves to find it."

They stepped inside.

The tunnel was narrow, carved from rough stone.

Water dripped slowly from the ceiling.

Each step echoed softly along the passage.

Daniel shone his flashlight ahead.

The tunnel curved deeper underground.

Then suddenly—

The beam stopped.

Elena froze.

Something lay on the ground ahead.

Bones.

Not human.

Old animal bones scattered across the dirt floor.

But beside them…

Something metallic glinted in the light.

Daniel knelt carefully and picked it up.

A rusted pendant.

Heart-shaped.

Elena gasped.

She had seen it before.

In the old photograph of Lucia Bellini.

Her hand trembled.

"This was hers," she whispered.

Daniel's voice lowered.

"Then we're close."

The tunnel stretched deeper into the darkness ahead.

And somewhere beyond that darkness—

Lucia Bellini's final secret was waiting.
