Chapter 8 - The voice on the Tape

They found an old cassette player in Elena's grandmother's attic.

It took longer than it should have to press play.

Daniel held the tape like it might burn him.

Elena watched his hands.

Click.

Static filled the room first. A low hiss. Then silence.

Then—

A woman's voice.

Soft. Controlled. Familiar in a way that made Daniel's shoulders stiffen.

" If you're listening to this… then something has gone wrong."

Daniel closed his eyes.

It was her.

Isabella.

"I never meant for it to happen this way," the voice continued. "But Lucia wouldn't stop. She threatened to expose everything. The land. The money. Matteo panicked."

Elena's breath caught.

Lucia.

Another name.

Another person.

" We met in the cellar," Isabella said on the tape. "I only wanted to scare her. To make her understand. But she pushed me. We argued. She slipped."

The recording crackled.

Then the sentence that changed everything—

" When she hit the ground, she wasn't breathing."

The room went silent except for the faint spinning of the tape.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

Elena felt frozen.

" We didn't plan to bury her," Isabella's voice continued, breaking slightly. "But if anyone found out, both our families would be ruined.

The tape ended abruptly.

Click.

Daniel didn't move for several seconds.

"Elena…" he said quietly.

She couldn't look at him.

Her grandfather hadn't just filed a missing report.

He had helped hide a body.

And Daniel's grandmother—

Had caused a death.

Not murder.

But not innocent either.

The weight of it pressed down on them.

Two families.

One accident.

Forty years of silence.

And now—

Only them standing in the middle of it.
