Chapter 48 - Chapter 46. Closer

Oscar

No matter how hard we tried we couldn't get past the barrier of mages blocking the breach. We had been there for over a week, observing and trying to get in when people weren't looking, but they always caught us and told us to go back. It was getting frustrating.

If it were up to me I would've just killed everyone and let the demons rampage while we took the chance to get to the other side of the breach, but Jack and Orus said that was bad, as if I gave a damn, and had told me to wait, so here we were, waiting.

" We should just kill them all" I whispered for the hundredth time that day.

" We don't want to kill innocent people for no reason" Ours said, shaking his head from where he was hiding behind a bush a few feet away from me.

" You don't" I whispered. I clearly didn't give a damn, what's more I was actually in favor of killing everyone.

" Let's use that as a last resort" Jack said.

For me what we were going through was a situation that needed every single resort and option, including murder, but Jack didn't think so, and even Orus, who had screamed and rampaged when he had found out that we couldn't just go in, told me we couldn't kill everyone. They hated fun.

I huffed at Jack's words and turned to face the officials in charge of this side of the breach. By now I could tell how long their shifts were and who they were, but that wasn't the problem. If it was we would've entered a long time ago. No, the problem were the demons coming through the other side.

We had no intentions to fight them, well Jack and Orus didn't, but the demons didn't know that. The one time that we had managed to sneak past the guards the demons had come at us, claws ready to shred us to pieces. We had managed to stand our ground but at the end they had overwhelmed us and we had to retreat, relaying on the guards to keep them at check while we backed away and into the nearby port town.

Just as the guards took their positions the breach rippled and a new wave of demons came out. All of them had different colors and shapes, but they had one thing in common. They were all heavily armed and wanted us dead.

Their eyes glimmered maniacally as they rushed forward, weapons clashing against the guards, who immediately sent a signal for more soldiers to arrive.

Black and red blood poured out of the bodies in the middle of the battle as it got more and more intense, the number of bodies laying on the ground intensifying.

" Now's our chance" I whispered, moving slowly towards an unprotected section of the breach were there were no guards and no demons.

" Wait" Jack pulled me back from my jacket and made me go down to the floor as an arrow passed just right above me, where I had been standing a few seconds ago.

" Over there" Jack said, pointing to where a demon was standing near the section I wanted to approach, quiver and bow in hand. This was going to be fun.

I smiled as I crawled through the ground, moving closer and closer to where the demon was. I hadn't killed anyone for a whole week. My whole body was tingling with excitement at the fact that I would be able to feel blood trickling down my hands while I saw the light in their eyes go away.

" Keep it down you psycho" Jack said from where he was crawling beside me.

I just smiled even more, Jack wasn't going to take me down, and kept crawling.

Just when I was finally within range I took out my dagger, I loved getting dirty, guns were too cold and impersonal for me, I loved seeing the look in their eyes when they died as I stared at them just a few inches away, and got up to my feet, rushing to where the demon was, ready to feel the incredible sensation of a kill.

" Really?" I asked, all my excitement gone.

Orus was besides the demon's corpse, his claws covered with his intestines.

Instead of answering me Orus just shrugged and pointed to the unprotected section of the breach that I had spot from where we had been hiding behind the few bushes that grew in this area.

" Next time leave something for me" I whispered as I walked past Orus, who was licking his claws clean, and into the transparent section of mist that separated the demon world from ours.

Seeing as no demons came out, they must've not have heard us kill their friend, I took a step forward and plummeted a few feet down into the middle of a jungle.

Orus and Jack didn't take long to follow me, falling besides me. As soon as we were all there we studied our surroundings, but no matter how I looked at it there was nothing there I recognized. The green things were clearly plants, but none I knew of. Not even the insects were recognizable, all of them were too strange to belong to Earth, bit fit oddly well inside the demon world.

" Where to?" I spun to face Orus, the only one that could tell us where Lyan was thanks to his mate bond, and crossed my arms.

If he told me we couldn't reach her I was seriously gutting someone. The whole week I had to spend without Lyan was hell. All my emotions were dulled and except for when I got to kill a rabbit for dinner I hadn't killed anything in over two weeks and it was starting to get on my nerves.

I could feel I was more prone to snapping and murdering than when I was with Lyan, but that was other people's problem, not mine. Jack and Orus had also been in a bad mood since Lyan had disappeared and like me they sometimes looked back when they heard a noise, as if they expected her to be there. We had become fools, but truth be told I didn't care about what other people said at all, I just wanted my little demon back, and if I had to murder for it, well so be it.

Orus stopped for a second and stayed still, listening to his bond. Then he pointed North.

" That way" He muttered.

We all turned to look at the direction Orus had pointed at, where only forest could be seen.

" Turn into a dragon" I ordered Orus, but instead of obeying me he just turned to face north and started walking. " Did you just ignore me?" I said in my sweetest voice.

Since we had started this journey Orus and Jack had constantly told me not to kill anyone and had gotten on my nerves, and just now Orus had the guts to steal my prey. I was pissed. If he wanted to play I would play. I caressed my dagger in my inner pocket as I caught up to Orus and faced him.

" You know perfectly well that I can't shapeshift inside hell" Orus said in an angry voice. Oh, right. There was that thing called demonic power.

I backed away, no longer so pissed.

" My powers won't work either" Jack added from my left.

As usual they would just rely on me. As I always said they were completely useless.

A few hours later

We had been walking for hours and had yet to see something besides green plants and a thing I was sure was a mix between a bear and a butterfly flying right past us and into the opposite direction.

I was getting bored and had nothing to do. I yawned as we walked past another man eating tree that had already tried to swallow Jack whole and past a suspicious looking pond that we had discovered was an ant nest.

" How much longer?" I bitched to Orus again.

" I told you it'd be days" Orus growled, pissed at me. Good, at least now we were getting somewhere. Playing with their emotions and reactions was so much fun that I could actually forget my tedium for a few minutes while I did it.

" If only you could shapeshift" I sighed. " But as usual you must be useless or you'll die"

Orus turned to look at me with murder in his eyes and I smiled. I was finally going to get some action.

" Stop it you two" Jack stood in front of us and looked at us like a disappointed mother.

If he'd thought he could make me back away he was in for a fun surprise. I smiled as I looked at Orus with a smug smile, daring him to come closer, but instead of taking the bait Orus spun around and took a fighting stance just as a giant demon, easily 8 feet tall and bulky as a bull, appeared from behind a tree and charged at him.

I sat on a rock and watched as Orus got hit on the face by the massive demon again and again as Jack tried to stab him in the back with a branch. None of them had thought ahead and brought weapons. Tipical useless behavior.

As I looked at them getting their asses kicked I felt absolutely nothing. I had been with them since I was little. They had always looked after me. I knew I should've felt something, but I didn't. All I felt was a slight amusement at seeing them get their asses handed to them, nothing in me urging me to help. Well, Mark did, but he was annoying so he didn't count.

' Go help right now!' His screaming voice inside my head was annoying, which was why I usually tunned him out, making him unable to see or hear, but when the situation was dear, or something that Mark loved was in danger I couldn't push him out, so I was stuck hearing him scream in my head to help them as I felt absolutely nothing at all.

" Are you not going to help us?" Orus screamed from where he was barely standing his ground against the demon, holding his arms still while Jack stabbed him in the side with the branch.

I watched as the demon's skin ruptured and black blood came flowing out, but before any real damage could be caused the demon threw Orus over five feet away, right into a tree, and took the branch from his side, the wound healing instantly as he glared at Jack.

" No, thanks" I said loud enough for them to hear while I picked at my nails

' Help them. Please' Mark begged me, but I ignored him as I continued watching.

Orus had managed to get a hold of the demon's neck and was now choking him, using all his strenth, but the demon was stronger. He smashed Orus against a tree and he let go, wimping away as Jack distracted the demon. Not having their powers was making them really weak. That was why I didn't want to rely on them.

' If they die Lyan will be sad' Mark's voice was now barely a desperate whisper.

He was right. Lyan would be sad if they died.

I got up from my rock and launched at the demon, who was already bleeding from several wounds where Orus had managed to claw at him with his sharp nails, including his troath. That meant that his regenerative ability had a limit. Good to know.

" That's not how you slit someone's throat" I mocked Orus as I ran. " This is" I jumped and dragged my dagger all over the demon's neck as he hit me in the stomach and sent me flying.

As I hit the ground and pain bloomed all over my ass and stomach I laughed. Finally, a fight.

I got up puking blood from my mouth, staining the ground red even more, Jack and Orus had already done their part in that, and launched again.

While I was in the middle of a jump and Orus and Jack were ganging up on the demon to hold him while I killed him the demon suddenly turned and took off after casting one last glance our way.

" That was easy" I said, calming down as the rush from the fight disappeared.

" Why'd you left us there to die?" Orus's face was lit with anger and I chuckled internally. This was fun.

" Do I need a reason?"

I could see Orus's amber eyes twitch as he looked at me.

" At least he helped us, even if it was at the end" Jack intervined.

" Come on, we don't want to keep Lyan waiting, do we?" I said as I started walking again towards the North, where my little demon was waiting for me.

I watched from the corner of my eye as Orus cleaned some blood from his face and Jack did the same, complaining about the blood and not been able to clean it, and then they followed me, clearly excited to be closer to Lyan that we'd been for a week.

' Wait for me, my little demon. I'm coming for you' I thought.

' We're coming for you' Mark corrected me.
