Chapter 41 - Chapter 40. Death

Lyan

My whole body was on fire. It felt as if all my bones were breaking and healing in a matter of seconds. I shouted and shouted, but no one came to my rescue.

From behind me I could hear my attackers laughing. I was going to get out of here. I had to. Using up all my strength I managed to get myself upright and slowly got up.

" What do you think you're doing?" A woman laughed. " You'll never get out"

I ignored her and moved my feet, feeling as my body failed me little by little. They just laughed as I tried to run, not making it far before I fell to the ground again.

I crawled through the ground, breaking my nails and blooding my hands, but I had to get out. I kept trying to move, while my whole body was on fire, sending pain all over my nervous system.

By now all I could feel was the pain. Even moving my hands forward sent me spiraling. I was genually beginning to think that I'd die there. I couldn't move and my guys wouldn't come to my rescue.

Even as I despaired I kept clawing at the ground, moving inch by inch away from them. Maybe if I got far away enough the artifact would stop working and I'd be free, but even I knew it was just a false hope. I could see my attacker's shadows looming over me like a death sentence, ready to strike.

Suddenly someone grabbed me by the hair and my whole head tilted backwards.

" You put up a good fight, I'll give you that" The same woman that had laughed before said" but now it's time to end it"

She took a silver dagger to my neck. This was it. This was the end.

Just as I closed my eyes, ready to accept my death, there was nothing else I could do to stop it, something tore the woman's neck out and she fell to the ground, a bloody mess of limp meat instead of the lively woman that had tried to murder me mere seconds ago.

In front of me Fluffy was seating on top of the woman, glaring at the others and groaning.

" Kill them" A man said, a murderous gleam in his eyes. He teared up looking at the dead woman, but quickly looked away from her body.

All of them came at us at the same time, but unlike what anyone would've expected Fluffy managed to hold them back. He began bitting necks and destroying legs. The attackers went down fast, either badly hurt or dead.

My body was still on fire, but the pain had somewhat dimmed after Fluffy had destroyed the artifact, so now I could move.

I thought about running, but I couldn't leave Fluffy alone, even if I had no idea how he had managed to escape the academy and how he had known where I was. I got to my feet and threw my shadows at them.

They were repelled by most of them, but not by all. I watched, healing quickly, as my shadows grabbed whoever they could and threw them into Fluffy's claws.

The whole area had become a brutal battlefield. There was blood everywhere and the corpses littered the ground, but even after seeing all of that more of them kept coming.

Fluffy was beginning to slow down and I could even feel my shadow's strength dimming. We had to get out of there, and fast.

" Fluffy!!" I screamed.

Fluffy tilted his head and looked at where I as pointing, the way out of the forest. I could've sworn he nodded.

I began running in the direction I had pointed and saw Fluffy running behind me, quickly catching up to me. We were going to get out. I was feeling better just by running. My body no longer hurt and I had discovered someone had betrayed me and that the gem was very much real. Today had been an eventful day. I was dying to get back to my bed and see my guys.

I jumped to avoid a branch on the floor and suddenly pain rippled all over my neck.

I fell to the floor and looked down at my neck, where half my head had been severed. ' Oh, God. This is bad' I thought. I began to panic. This couldn't be it. I couldn't be dying, but I felt my strength leave me as my blood flowed out of me. I could've sworn I heard Fluffy scream in an otherworldly fashion before the shadow between the trees, which was the man from the cave, I should've killed that motherfucker, pulled my head backwards.

All I could think about was that I was at least going to join my family and that I wished I had seen my guys one last time as I saw how my body fell to the floor without my head. Then it all went blank.

Oscar

I could tell something was not right the moment Lyan got up with tears on her eyes and ran away from us. I got up, ready to follow, but Orus pulled me back.

" She needs time" He whispered into my ear.

Fine. I'd give her her God's Damm time.

Hearing Abamma praise herself was downright torture. I just wanted to blow my ears up so that I wouldn't have to listen to her anymore.

I looked down at my dagger, maybe I could carve out my ears, just for a little while and I wouldn't have to hear her speak anymore.

I was thinking about my own stuff, Abamma still going strong despite two hours having passed by, when Orus tensed up.

" What's wrong?" Jack asked him, clearly distressed too. Orus being stressed wasn't a good sign.

" Lyan" He muttered and got up without saying anything else.

I got up too and ran after him, following him through the academy halls until we reached the door that led out to the forest. Orus tried to open it, but it was stuck.

" Let me try" I pushed him away and pulled with all my strength, but the door didn't blulge.

" To hell with it all" Orus took his clothes off and transformed right then and there.

The whole hall rippled as the walls broke and the whole wing came crushing down. I could hear the screams of the teachers, telling Orus to shift back, but he ignored them as he lowered himself and both Jack and I got up.

Riding a dragon was freaking awesome. It felt like riding a bike, but so much better. Not even my best bike could compete. I'd have to trick him to do it again some other day.

I held onto his thick scales as the forest passed down below us. We were gracefully soaring through the sky until we weren't. We suddenly stopped and Orus looked ahead as if there was something there, but there wasn't.

" What's wrong?" Jack asked, clearly nervous.

" There's a spell here. I can't go any further" Orus growled more than said.

" I'll fix it" Jack started casting a spell and when he was done he threw it against the invisible barrier, but it didn't move. Useless, as usual.

" Agggghhhh!!!" Jack screamed in frustration.

" How about we go down?" I suggested.

" The barrier goes all the way into the earth" Orus grumbled.

Freaking awesome. We waited while Orus roared at the barrier and Jack cast spells against it, all to no avail.

Orus suddenly roared so loud that my whole eardrums hurt. I would've loved that a few minutes ago, but now it was annoying. I was thinking about stabbing him in the back when he looked at us with teary eyes and roared even louder.

Blood was flowing out of my broken eardrums, but I didn't care. I liked a little bit of pain. I was way more concerned by the look on Orus's face that said he was willing to just close his wings and let us all plummet to our deaths.

" What's wrong?" I asked, ready to take out my dagger and stab someone, anyone at all.

" Lyan's gone" He said in a deep voice.

I didn't believe him. He was wrong. The only thing I cared about in the world couldn't have died.

Just as I was thinking that Orus roared and soared through the sky again, the barrier no longer a problem, whoever had cast it was dead, and that didn't mean anything good.

Orus suddenly dropped to he ground in the middle of the forest and shapeshifted, running towards a pile of corpses. Me and Jack ran behind him, praying that Lyan would be alright.

The whole area was a massacre. There were guts and body parts everywhere. It was as if a vicious beast had destroyed them and shredded them to pieces. If I hadn't been in a hurry to check if Lyan was okay I would've stopped to admire the masterpiece. I doubted even I could've killed so many people in such a creative way. If Lyan had done it I was going to kiss her senseless. Once I found her I would hug her and kiss her whole, the air still smelling like the coppery scent of blood.

I stopped on my tracks when I saw what was in front of me. Lyan was ... dead. Really dead this time. Her body was on the floor and her head was apart, a few feet away.

I dropped to my knees. She couldn't be gone. She was the only person that ever made me feel anything. Tears started streaming down my face and I took some with my finger and stared at them. Even dead she was the only person that managed to make me feel.

Now that she was gone I felt so hollow. I had failed her. We had failed her.

I got up and took my daggers from where I had hidden them inside my pockets.

" You didn't protect her" I muttered as I attacked Orus from behind, stabbing him on the leg.

He went down to the floor but didn't resist as I straddled him and raised my dagger, ready to strike.

His face was covered in tears and snot and he was looking at me like a defeated man. He deserved to look that way. We all deserved it. We had failed her.

I didn't hesitate as I lowered my dagger with all my strength, right into his eye socket, but before the dagger could connect Orus spun around and avoided the hit.

" Coward!" I sput, venom in my voice.

" I feel her" He whispered.

" What do you mean?" I raised back my dagger, waiting for him to say his last words.

" She's alive"

I let my dagger drop and looked at him with disbelief. I had always had a few loose screws, but I hadn't thought he was the same. Lyan was clearly dead. Her body was just in front of us.

" What do you mean?" Jack, who had been petting her hair, left her side and came to us, looking at Orus as if he was a dead man, but he was, we all were. I had just chosen Orus as my first victim because he was stronger, but Jack's turn would come.

" I feel her"

" She's dead!" I pointed out, pointing at the corpse just in front of us.

" I know, but I still feel her"

" Then where is she?" Jack's eyes were also red from crying and he seemed ready to either break down or punch something.

" In the demon world" Orus whispered.

I laid back and thought for a second. What he was saying made sense, and if she was in the demon world it meant she was alive, though how she had survived I had no idea, but if I ever found out Orus had lied to get away from me with his life....well.... let's just say he would've begged me to kill him now.

" I guess we're going to the demon world" I said as I got up and away from Orus.

If my little demon was dead the whole world was going to burn. I'd kill Orus, then Jack, then Abamma, the dean and everyone that stood in my way. I'd bring the world down to its knees and then I'd follow her.

They could only pray she was alive, because if she wasn't all of hell was going to be unleashed on them, and when I found the person who ordered all those people to attack my little demon... Let's just say he would be begging me to kill him.
