Chapter 11 - The Newbie

So, having dealt with yet another threat to the peaceful life of New York, Peter jumped from house to house in search of the perfect angle for a new photo. He ran through the options in his head, thinking about where he could take a picture and successfully sell it to his beloved boss, Jameson.

"Yay!" Parker shouted happily, doing a triple somersault in the air. "I'm on a roll today!"

At that moment, Peter's phone rang. He took the gadget out of a secret pocket in his suit and answered.

"Parker speaking.

"Hi, Pete, it's me, Miles. Miles Morales.

"Oh, good to hear from you, Miles. How's life?

"Pete, can we meet up?

"Okay, where?

"I'll send you the address.

The call ended, and Parker received a message from Miles. Ten minutes later, he arrived at the meeting place. The youngster didn't know yet that Peter was Spider-Man, so the Friendly Neighbour had to switch to being a photographer and just a fun guy named Peter. He climbed onto the roof via the fire escape and looked around.

"Miles! Are you there?"

"Pete!" greeted the youngster, jumping off the water tower and landing like a superhero.

"Whoa! Miles, what are you doing?

"I was bitten by a spider, and now I have Spider-Man's powers. But I don't know what to do... You happen to know Spider-Man, and I'd like to talk to him about this...

"Well, you've come to the right place, Miles.

Peter shot a web at the familiar tower and, jumping up, pulled himself to the top.

"What?!

"Nice to meet you, Emergency Man 2. First, always keep your abilities a secret. Second, try not to put your family in danger. And third, be friendly to everyone, even the gangsters who shoot at you. That's about it.

"Wow!

"Well done. So... how long have you been Spider-Man?

"About two weeks ago. Or maybe a week and a half.

"A week and a half, hmm... How do you like it? How does it feel?

"I don't know... It's all kind of weird. It's like I've been given this gift and I can be a hero, but I'm scared.

"Don't worry, Miles. You have a responsible mentor who will always help his student.

"Thanks, Pete.

"You're welcome. Take care of yourself and your mum, don't forget your studies, and get ready. We'll start training soon. Heh.

Miles shook Parker's hand, and they parted ways.

In the evening, Spider-Man finished his day's patrol, taking a couple of photos for Bugle, and now he was looking forward to an evening surprise from his beloved Jess. But what had she prepared for him?

Peter flew home. On the way, he bought a couple of hot dogs and enjoyed the "hot dogs," as they like to joke in New York, for the entire flight. It turns out that there are really delicious hot dogs in Midtown! Soon Spider-Man arrived at his rented apartment, quickly took off his costume, took a refreshing shower and landed on the bed to take a nap. He had dreams, vague and strange, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that an hour later, Jess burst into the apartment at breakneck speed.

In some unknown and slightly silly but amusing way, Spider-Girl lost control of her web. Spinning in mid-air, she crashed into the window, breaking it, landed on the bed where Pete was sleeping soundly, and bumped slightly into the wall. Pete jumped up to the ceiling in surprise. Jess lay with her legs in the air and looked at him, taking off her mask.

"Hi!

"Jess, are you okay?! You just flew into the room, broke the window, and now you're smiling?! What if the landlord sees this? He'll kick me out immediately!

"Well, sorry, I didn't mean to, it just happened by accident...

Parker jumped down from the ceiling and helped Jessica to her feet. He was still trying to figure out why he was being punished like this on such a beautiful day, his right eye twitching slightly.

"Peterrr," the girl said flirtatiously.

"Don't even think about it.

"Ha, just kidding! Anyway, I promised you a surprise — here's your surprise.

Jessica held out a small box wrapped in gift paper. Pete took the gift and began to open it.

"Wow. What's in there?

"Open it and you'll see.

Peter unwrapped the box and saw a neatly folded new costume inside. However, when he picked it up, Parker was horrified. The costume turned out to be a cheap jumpsuit, and instead of a mask, there was a cardboard bag.

"Are you kidding me?!" Peter was furious. "First the window, now this damn costume! Jess, you... you...

"It was a joke, silly! Here's your real costume," said Jessica, handing him the now accurate new Spider-Man outfit.

"Wow..." Parker was speechless. "Well, now I'm happy. Although, you know, I'll take the first costume too. You never know..."

Peter put Jess's gifts back in the box. He walked over to her and kissed his girlfriend.

"You're welcome, Peter.

"Want to go for a walk? I know a great place.

"Well, I'm not really into wandering around aimlessly, but with you, I wouldn't mind doing more than just walking," she replied.

Jess waited for Parker to change, and fifteen minutes later, the spider couple landed in Central Park. It was already dark outside, but the day wasn't particularly bright and clear; it looked more like a brutal, cloudy day, so the clouds didn't let the moonlight through.

Peter and Jess walked along the path in their costumes, chatting about something.

"You know, I've been wanting to ask you..." Parker began.

"Yes?

"Did you really make this costume yourself?

"Of course.

"You know, those are really cool costumes, both of them." Parker suddenly stopped. "Is it just me, or would those two oak trees be perfect for making a soft hammock out of spider webs and just lying under the open sky?

Jess smiled at Peter's suggestion, and he immediately put his plan into action. The couple lay down on a really comfortable blanket made of threads and held hands.

"Shall we look at the stars?" Peter asked.

"Sure... I even know all the constellations.

While the girl told Peter about the celestial bodies visible from their hammock, Parker couldn't take his eyes off Jess's beautiful face. Noticing that he was hardly listening to her, Jessica fell silent and turned to him.

"Aren't you interested?

"No, of course you are... It's just that I have a question...

"Go ahead.

"How did you become like this? I mean, Spider-Man.

The smile disappeared from Jess's face, and she turned away from him, continuing to stare at the starry sky. But, apparently deciding on a frank conversation, because it would have happened sooner or later anyway, the girl turned back.

"My father... He was a scientist. He was conducting experiments with radiation, and one day my mother accidentally got exposed to his device... It was completely accidental. But nothing happened to her. But I... I got these abilities.

"God, Jess... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... First I yelled at you, then I started this conversation...

"No, it's not your fault, Peter. I should have told you about this a long time ago.

"Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" Parker asked, making puppy dog eyes.

"Well, try, Peter," the girl replied.

The couple joined in a passionate kiss. Passion overwhelmed them, and the spider web hammock began to sway from side to side. Suddenly, in another burst of passion, Pete accidentally touched the net with his hand, and it tore. The couple fell onto the grass. They laughed and decided to go home...
