Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Cell

She woke in a white room.

Not the comforting white of her OmniSphere office, but a clinical, sterile white that hurt her eyes. She was lying on a hard surface, her wrists and ankles bound by restraints she couldn't see. When she tried to move, she couldn't.

"Where am I?" Her voice was hoarse.

A figure appeared above her. A woman. Sharp features, dark hair pulled back severely, eyes that held no warmth. She was not dressed in the sleek fabrics of the city. She wore rough, practical clothing, the kind Kai had only seen in historical archives.

"You're in the only place that's safe," the woman said. "My name is Elara. You've been marked for deletion. I pulled you out."

"Pulled me out of where?"

"Out of the dream."

Kai stared at her. The woman's words made no sense. "I don't understand."

Elara's lips curved into a smile that held no humor. "Of course you don't. That's the point. The dream is designed to be incomprehensible to the dreamer. But you started to wake up. You started asking questions. And the system noticed."

She gestured, and the white room dissolved. They were standing on a platform, hanging in a vast, dark space. Below them, stretching in every direction, were layers of light. Cities. Landscapes. Oceans of data. And floating among them, countless human figures, curled in fetal positions, their eyes closed, their faces peaceful.

"This is the truth," Elara said. "There is no real world. There are only layers. Simulations within simulations. You were born in Layer 7, the most stable and secure. You were a hunter, tasked with maintaining the dream for the billions who sleep there. But the dream is cracking. And the man you saw—the man who looks like you—he's the reason why."

Kai stared at the sleeping figures, her mind reeling. "Who is he?"

Elara turned to face her, her eyes burning with an intensity that was almost frightening.

"His name is Orion. He was one of the architects. And he's your brother."
