Chapter 11 - The King Under the Mound

The air inside the Duende's cavern was thick with the smell of wet earth and ancient, undisturbed minerals. Unlike the humid jungle outside, this place was cold—a biting, subterranean chill that settled into Leon's marrow. Luminescent fungi clung to the damp walls, casting a sickly, pale-green glow over the jagged stalactites that hung like the teeth of a sleeping giant.

"Stay close, Maya," Leon whispered, his hand resting on the hilt of his Ancestral Bolo. The blade was humming again, a low-frequency vibration that warned of a different kind of threat: one not made of flesh, but of corrupted stone.

They reached a wide, circular grotto. In the center, sitting upon a throne of raw obsidian, was the Duende King. He was twice the size of his subjects, his skin not mossy, but encrusted with jagged crystals that pulsed with a rhythmic, violet light—the color of the Rogue God's corruption. His eyes were no longer coals; they were hollow voids leaking a thick, black smoke.

"The shadow..." the King rasped, his voice a landslide of grinding rock. "It promises a world where the sun never burns. A world where the earth is the only master."

"That's not a world, Your Majesty," Leon said, stepping into the light of the fungi. "That's a grave. And I've seen enough of those for one lifetime."

The King roared, and the floor of the cavern buckled. Massive pillars of stone erupted from the ground, nearly pinning Leon against the ceiling.

"Leon, the crystals!" Maya shouted, leaning against the cavern entrance. "The violet stones on his chest—they are the anchors of the hex! Shatter them, or the earth will swallow you whole!"

Leon didn't hesitate. He dived over a rising stone spire, his "Calm Under Pressure" trait kicking in. The world slowed into a series of tactical vectors. He saw the King raising a massive, stony fist, the air around it shimmering with gravitational force.

THOOM.

The fist smashed into the ground where Leon had been a split second before, shattering the obsidian floor. Leon used the debris as a ramp, sprinting up the King's arm.

"Anito's Justice!" Leon roared.

He didn't aim for the head. He drove the point of the Bolo directly into the largest violet crystal embedded in the King's sternum. The rusted metal of the blade groaned, then flared with a brilliant, blinding white light as the "Spirit Essence" he had gathered from the Manananggal surged into the strike.

The King howled, a sound that shook the very foundations of the mountain. Black smoke billowed from the wound, but the stone fist swiped Leon off his chest, sending him flying across the chamber. He slammed into the wall, the air leaving his lungs in a pained gasp.

Everything went dark at the edges. Leon felt the familiar pull of the void—the same cold embrace of the Agno River. But then, he felt a warm hand on his brow.

"Not today, Protector," Maya's voice echoed in his mind.

A surge of violet-starlight energy flooded his system. Maya had cast her remaining life force into a final blessing.

Leon stood up, his eyes glowing with a fierce, amber light. He didn't just hold the Bolo; he became the weapon. He lunged one last time, a blur of motion that bypassed the King's defenses. He thrust the blade into the remaining crystals, twisting the hilt.

"Back to the earth," Leon growled.

The crystals shattered into a million harmless glass shards. The violet light died instantly, replaced by a soft, warm gold that radiated from the King's heart. The smoke dissipated, and the King's hollow eyes returned to a calm, glowing red.

The King slumped on his throne, no longer a monster, but a tired old spirit. "Go, Last Anito," he wheezed, gesturing to a wall that was beginning to melt away into a shimmering portal of roots. "The path is open. Sanctum is under siege. Tell the mortals... the earth still remembers its debt."

Leon scooped up a faint and exhausted Maya. He looked at the portal—the "Path of Hidden Roots"—and then at his blade, which was now completely free of rust, shining like a mirror.

"We're going to Sanctum," Leon said, stepping into the light. "And then, we're going for the Rogue God."
