The ride back to the Ferrante estate was quiet.
Marco's driver pulled the luxury car to a smooth stop just outside the heavy iron gates of the Ferrante estate. Marco didn't try to invite himself inside.
"You played a perfect game tonight, Mara," Marco said softly, turning to look at her in the dim light. "The syndicate saw exactly what they needed to see."
"Thank you, Marco. And thank you for the escort."
Marco smiled, but his eyes were serious. "I meant what I said on the dance floor. Nico doesn't look at you like a stepson looks at his father's widow. He looks at you like a man guarding his most prized possession. Be careful."
Mara kept her face perfectly neutral. "Well, I'm technically the head of the family according to his father's will. He is just protective of the family."
Marco reached out and gently kissed the back of her hand. "The Vitale shield remains on the border. Have a good night, Regent."
