Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: An Elf’s Soul-Searching Interrogation of the God

Orario—the Labyrinth City—was, without question, the center of the world.

Countless fortunes, glories, and dreams lay buried in the bottomless abyss known simply as the Dungeon.

The gods descended from Heaven in search of excitement, sealing away most of their divine power and authority to live in what they called the Lower World. There, they bestowed "Blessings" upon mortals, forming Familias, and sent their children to challenge the Dungeon's depths.

After all, it was easier to thrive beneath a great tree's shade. To a rookie adventurer, joining a strong, flourishing Familia was the perfect start.

Adventurers hunted monsters, leveled up, and traded magic stones and dropped materials for wealth.

And the gods? They enjoyed the spectacle—watching their children grow, competing with other Familias, turning mortal struggle into the grandest of games.

But the world always had exceptions.

For the fifth time, Haimer watched a passing adventurer glance at his recruitment notice with open disdain, then hurry away. At last, he couldn't help letting out a long sigh.

He leaned against his "temple"—if it could even be called that.

In truth, it was just a small two-story building.

Standing by the doorpost, Haimer held up a wooden sign with crooked Common written across it:

HAIMER FAMILIA — RECRUITING ADVENTURERS!

ALL GENDERS WELCOME. ALL RACES WELCOME.

FOOD AND LODGING PROVIDED. EXCELLENT BENEFITS!

People would glance at the sign, then at the shabby building behind it, then finally at Haimer's face.

Most would pause for a split second, their expressions twisting into a complicated blend of pity, suspicion, and deep doubt about the "food and lodging provided" part—before quickening their pace as if afraid he might latch onto them.

Haimer understood. His "presentation" really was terrible.

He was a transmigrator—someone who'd stumbled into this world and, through sheer absurd luck, became an ancient god.

In theory, he should have been laughing in his sleep.

Reality, however, slapped him so hard his ears were still ringing.

In Orario, whether a god prospered came down to two things: fame and money.

A famous god—someone like Loki, with her vast connections, or the Goddess of Beauty Freya—didn't need to recruit. People lined up to join, trampling their threshold flat.

A wealthy god—like Hephaistos, the goddess of forging—could lure adventurers with top-tier gear and enviable benefits.

Haimer had neither.

No fame. No money.

Crushingly, humiliatingly neither.

If nothing else, he was finally experiencing what it must have felt like for Hestia—the eternal flame's goddess—to descend to the Lower World and still fail to recruit a single member.

"Ugh…"

Haimer sighed again, tipping his head back against the chair as his thoughts sank inward.

He'd been in the Lower World for a month now.

Last week, he'd emptied what little savings he had to make this recruitment sign—his first step toward a grand plan: building a Familia from scratch.

And Orario had answered with yet another clean, brutal slap.

"Hah…"

"A god living on the streets."

The nickname described his situation with painful accuracy.

Then a light, graceful set of footsteps stopped in front of him.

Haimer looked up.

An elf girl stood at his makeshift stall, studying the wooden sign with curious interest.

She had the pointed ears and refined features typical of her race. Long, pale-gold hair fell smoothly down her back, glinting under the sun. She wore fitted, lightweight leather armor—sharply cut to show a slender figure without losing an adventurer's practicality.

A delicate shortbow hung at her waist, and a quiver rested across her back. An archer, clearly.

More importantly—she looked like a newcomer.

A truly seasoned adventurer wouldn't spare Haimer's roadside pitch a second glance.

A chance.

Haimer straightened at once, putting on what he believed to be his warmest, most sincere smile.

"My lady, greetings. You wouldn't happen to be a new adventurer to Orario, would you? Are you currently searching for a suitable Familia?"

The elf's gaze lifted from the sign to his face.

When she saw him clearly, surprise flickered through her emerald eyes, and a faint blush warmed her cheeks—quickly suppressed by impeccable manners.

Haimer's looks were, at the moment, his only asset besides a god's inherent nature.

Black hair, black eyes, sharp features—handsome enough to be mistaken for a divine masterpiece. Which, technically, was no longer a metaphor.

Even in plain homespun clothing, his clean, composed aura couldn't be hidden.

By looks alone, he could make ninety-nine percent of Orario's gods jealous.

But Orario was practical. People could admire a face, sure—but stake their life on it? Not without seeing what kind of Familia stood behind the god.

"Yes," the elf said with a polite dip of her head. "My name is Leila. I've just arrived in the city."

Her movements were elegant, her tone measured.

Her eyes moved back and forth between Haimer and the dilapidated building behind him—quietly appraising.

"May I ask… are you the Familia's god?"

"Indeed," Haimer said, lifting his chest and trying his best to appear dependable.

"My Familia is newly established, but its potential is limitless! Join now, and you'll be a founding member—core staff, an elder, the first page of our history!"

He launched into a passionate sales pitch, drawing on every "start-up dream" technique he'd seen in his previous life.

"And think about it, Lady Leila—when our Familia rises to the top of Orario, what glory will belong to you as the first to join? Your name will be carved into the very first page of our legend!"

Leila listened quietly without interrupting.

When Haimer finally finished in one breath, she spoke—calmly, unhurriedly—cutting clean through all his polished rhetoric with a single, surgical question.

"Then may I ask, Lord Haimer… are you well-known here, or in Heaven? Or do you have close ties with any of the established gods and their Familias stationed in Orario?"

Haimer froze.

"Ah… I'm rather low-key. My name isn't widely known in this world," he said vaguely.

Because—truthfully—while he wasn't a household name here like Loki, Freya, Hera, or Zeus…

In distant Heaven, he was far from unknown.

It was just that in Orario, if he rattled off those titles, no one would believe him.

Fortunately, Leila didn't react with hostility. Her posture remained perfectly courteous as she continued, her questions growing steadily more serious.

"Then your Familia's base… is this building?"

"Do you have plans to repair it, or relocate? And what is your source of funding?"

At those words, Haimer began to sweat in earnest.
