Chapter 20 - The Gala Incident

Chapter 19 — The Gala Incident

The grand ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers, soft music, and elegantly dressed guests. It was Adrian's annual gala, an event designed to impress high-profile clients and society elites.

Lina, dressed in a flowing gown, moved gracefully among the guests, practicing the poise and etiquette Adrian had drilled into her over the past weeks. Every step, every gesture, every word mattered.

Yet beneath the glamour, her nerves were taut. She remembered the intruder's recent attacks, the hidden passages, and the cryptic notes. Someone dangerous was watching, planning, waiting for the perfect moment.

As she offered a polite smile to a guest, a subtle movement caught her eye — a shadow near the service corridor. Her stomach twisted. The intruder had slipped in unnoticed.

Clara, discreetly by her side, leaned in and whispered, "Stay calm. Watch them carefully. Don't panic."

Lina's mind raced. Every step she had learned, every lesson from Adrian, now mattered.

Suddenly, a tray of champagne glasses tipped over near the entrance, sending glasses crashing to the floor. Guests gasped, stepping back. Lina's heart leapt — sabotage.

Moving silently through the crowd, she spotted the intruder attempting to slip through the chaos. Without drawing attention, Lina intercepted them, her hand gripping the intruder's sleeve just as they tried to vanish.

"You're not getting away," Lina whispered, her voice steady despite the pounding of her heart.

The intruder twisted free and fled into the shadows of the hall, but Lina had caught a glimpse of something — a distinctive ring, faint but unmistakable. Someone she had seen before in the mansion, someone trusted.

Adrian appeared just then, calm but commanding. "Are you unharmed?" he asked, his gaze sharp.

"Yes, sir," Lina replied, her hands still shaking slightly. She handed him the tiny clue she had caught. "This… this might help us."

Adrian examined it quickly, then his eyes softened for a fleeting moment as they met hers. "Good work, Lina. You handled yourself well."

Despite the brief praise, Lina couldn't shake the tension. The intruder had struck at a public event — bold, daring, and dangerous.

As the gala resumed and the music played on, Lina's eyes scanned the crowd. Someone was watching. Waiting. Planning their next move.

And she knew that the mansion's secrets, the intruder, and the shadows surrounding Adrian's world were far from over.
