Chapter 4 - A Good Life

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The wooden windowsill creaked as I climbed through. I sighed as I let my backpack fall to the floor, kicking my boots off and sitting on my bed. I looked up at my apartment.
It was nothing fancy, but it was home. White walls encompassed a small flat, with a kitchen in the corner separated by a counter. The entire space was an open floor plan, so the kitchen opened into the lounge where my white leather couch sat, alongside a large flat screen that lay on top of a small table across from it.
My bedroom was through a door, the walls inside being a dark blue in color. The room had a king size bed, a desk lining against the wall and a closet. And maybe one or two posters of the Dazzler.
I stood up and walked to the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water as I processed the fuckery of the last 2 hours. I robbed a Mob boss, jumped out of a thirty story skyscraper, fought a woman in a spider costume, and then shot electricity from my hands.
What a life.
I shook my head as I walked back into my bedroom, peeling my black turtleneck off, and then the black shirt I had on above my black combat pants.
What can I say? Black is tactical.
I reached into my backpack and pulled out the canister, examining it.
The hell was this doing in Fisk's lab? He doesn't seem like the science type.
I turned the cannister over and... oh.
On the back of the cannister, in big orange letters, was written WARNING: HAZARDOUS.
I let out a very manly yelp as I dropped the cannister onto my bed.
"Why the FUCK is Fisk keeping Hazardous materials in his office?! Please don't tell me that's uranium or something. Did I just get super cancer??"
I quickly grabbed the cannister and shoved it into the back of my closet, deciding to deal with it later.
I slowly walked over and flopped onto my bed. I took the time to think over everything that's happened, and what the hell I was gonna do next. As I stared at the ceiling, I heard a purr as something jumped on my chest.
I grinned as I scratched the chin of my pet cat, Moxie. She melted into my touch, her gray fur shining in the moonlight streaming through the window.
"Hey there girl, did you miss me?"
Her response was a small chirp as she curled into a ball on my chest, seemingly content now that I was home. I just chuckled as I closed my eyes, letting myself drift off to sleep.
My eyes shot open as my alarm blared by my side. I closed my eyes again and groaned as I rolled over and slammed the alarm clock's button as usual. Only, instead of silence, there was a sickening crunch. I slowly opened my eyes, to see my alarm clock now in pieces.
"That's...odd."
I slowly sat up, staring at my hand in confusion. I didn't think about it too long, though, as Moxie started meowing at my feet, no doubt asking me to pour her some breakfast.
I stood up, stretching as I walked over to kitchen with her bowl and poured her some kibble.
"Relax, Mox, I'm getting to it. God, you'd think I starved you with how desperately you beg for food." I chuckled as I walked into the bathroom to shower and get ready. I splashed my face with water, glancing at myself in the mirror. I looked back down at my hands and... wait, what?
My eyes shot back up at the mirror, taking a proper look this time.
Now, don't get me wrong, I was kind of fit before. I had to be to pull off half the shit I did.
But now? By comparison, I was fucking ripped.
My arms weren't huge, but there was clearly muscle packed under the skin, definition visible. My traps were prominent, leading upto a strong neck. Below, my stomach was toned, with a six pack slightly peaking through my skin. My thighs and calves displayed explosive strength, like I was an athlete.
"...Electricity and a rocking bod. Cole, your life keeps getting weirder, doesn't it?" I spoke to myself, wide eyed at what had happened overnight.
I finished washing up and walked out, grabbing a fresh pair of jeans, a black T-shirt and an oversized hoodie to hide my overnight body change. I ate breakfast while watching the news, seeing the aftermath of my fight, including the havoc I left on the street.
I turned off the TV as the news reporter began to interview a traumatized Garbage truck driver, slipping on some sneakers as I walked out of my apartment.
I popped in my earphones as I walked down the sidewalk, headed towards the subway station. I might have gotten the judge to let me take care of myself despite being 17, but I still had to go to school.
I scrolled through my phone, before finding my new favourite song;
Pixelated Kisses, by Joji
My sneakers squeaked against the floor as I walked into Midtown High. I pulled my earphones out as I walked through the hall, glancing around to make sure nobody was looking at me weird.
I shrugged off my paranoia as I reached my locker. I input the combination for my lock, and it popped open. I started sifting through my books for the day, grabbing what I needed for my first class. As I shut my locker, I got scared out of my skin by someone standing behind the door, waiting for me to close it.
"Jesus, man. Are you trying to give me a heart attack or something?" I exclaimed, already tired of this day.
Danny just laughed as he slung his arm around my shoulder.
"Come on, man, chill out. You're looking even more tense than usual." He said, walking with me to our first class.
"And your face looks even dumber than usual" I shot back, grinning as we walked through the door of the classroom.
We both walked to the back of the class and took our seats, still joking as the teacher walked in.
"Good morning, class" She spoke out loud, receiving a bunch of grumbles as response from the teenagers.
She squinted at the class in annoyance, before turning towards the door.
"Come in, dear." She said at no-one apparent, catching the attention of the class.
Danny and I watched as a girl walked in, a new face neither of us recognized.
She was about 5'6, with dark brown hair, green eyes and a fierce look on her face.
"Everyone, this is a new transfer student that will be joining you all from today. I expect you all to make her feel very welcome." She announced, before turning towards the new girl. "Please go ahead and introduce yourself, sweetheart."
The new girl nodded slowly, before speaking.
Her voice was hesitant, yet calm and authoritative.
"My name is Laura. Laura Kinney." And with that, her introduction seemed to end.
The teacher waited a few seconds for something else, but gave up and just nodded before telling her to take a seat anywhere.
Laura looked around the room, not moving from where she stood. Her eyes finally landed on me, and she finally showed her first bit of emotion... a smirk?
She quickly walked over, not to me, but to the guy sitting to my left.
"You. Get up." She spoke with indifference.
"I- Uh, what?" He stammered out in response.
She didn't reply, and just continued to stare threateningly.
The poor sap just stood up and shuffled away to find a new seat. Guy never stood a chance.
She sat down in the seat next to me, and just looked over at me.
"Book."
"Actually, I'm human."
"Something like that, at least." She muttered under her breath, but I barely just caught it.
"What was that?"
"Nothing. I don't have a textbook, share with me."
Before I could respond, she had already shoved her desk next to mine. I turned to Danny for help, but he was just snickering, clearly enjoying my situation.
Remind me to smack him across the head, I thought to myself.
I flipped open the textbook, and she leaned over to get a better look. Before I knew it, I caught myself looking at her. Her eyes were almost emerald in color, shining in the sunlight beaming through the windows. She had the smallest freckles adorning her cheekbones and nose, and a hint of pink in her cheeks. She was... stunning, in a word.
"Take a picture, it'll last longer" She said, her tone surprisingly neutral.
My head snapped back to my textbook, now very slightly blushing from being caught. From my right, I heard full blown laughing from Danny, who I was now considering frying with my newfound powers.
I slowly exhaled, before turning to my new captor/deskmate.
"My name's Cole Mercer. Nice to meet you." I whispered as the teacher began the class.
She finally looked up from the textbook, staring me in my eyes.
"I'm Laura. And it's nice to meet you too, Shadow." She whispered, a smirk replacing the resting apathy on her face.
...Shit.
