Chapter 50 - 50. Beach Day and Night Revelations

Chapter 50: Beach Day and Night Revelations

The sun hung high and golden over Akane Resort, painting the ocean in shades of turquoise and diamond-bright light. The beach stretched before them like a postcard come to life, white sand soft as powdered sugar between their toes.

Gray was the first to hit the water, shirt abandoned before his feet touched the shore. "LAST ONE IN BUYS DINNER!"

"That's not fair, you had a head start!" Lucy shouted after him, laughing as she kicked off her sandals.

Happy zoomed past in a blue blur, a tiny inner tube somehow procured from nowhere. "Aye! Fish reconnaissance mission! I will find the best seafood spot!"

Lucy waded in after them, the warm water lapping at her knees, her waist, her shoulders. She floated on her back, staring up at the impossibly blue sky, and let herself forget.

Forget the weight of keys and contracts. Forget the shadow in Natsu's eyes when he thought no one was looking. Forget the strange tension that had hung between him and Erza all morning.

Just for today. Just for now.

A wave splashed over her face.

"NATSU!"

He surfaced beside her, grinning that stupid, wonderful grin, water streaming from his pink hair. "You were being too peaceful. Looked boring."

"I WAS RELAXING!"

"Relaxing is boring." He ducked under the water and came up behind her, lifting her effortlessly onto his shoulders. "Now THIS is fun!"

"Natsu, wait!" She grabbed his hair for balance, laughing despite herself as he spun in circles, sending spray in every direction.

Gray appeared beside them, attempting the same maneuver with Happy, who shrieked with delighted terror. "AYE! GRAY, YOUR SHOULDERS ARE TOO BONY!"

"BONY?! I'll show you bony!"

The afternoon dissolved into chaos. Swimming races ended with Happy cheating via flight and Natsu cheating via foot-jets of flame. A sandcastle competition ended with Erza constructing a perfect scale replica of the guild hall and Gray accidentally sitting on it.

Through it all, Natsu was present. Laughing. Playing. Being exactly who he had always been.

But Lucy caught the moments between. The way his gaze drifted toward the horizon. The slight tension in his jaw when he thought no one was watching. The way he flinched, just slightly when Erza's hand brushed his during a game.

Something was wrong.

Something had been wrong for a long time.

But for now, she let it go.

For now, she laughed and splashed and let the sun warm her skin.

Tomorrow was for answers.

That night.

Erza's room.

The mirror reflected a woman she barely recognized.

Her hair was still slightly damp from the shower, falling in soft waves instead of its usual severe lines. Her skin glowed from a day in the sun. And her eyes…

Her eyes held a guilt she couldn't name.

She pressed her palm to the mark on her collarbone. Still there. A bruise in the shape of his mouth.

'Natsu mentioned the same thing happened with Lucy,' she thought. 'What does that mean? The same thing... what thing? The loss of control? The beast? The...'

She couldn't finish the thought.

'He won't tell me. If he wanted me to know, he would have said something. He keeps things locked away, things he thinks we can't handle.'

Her jaw tightened.

'Maybe I have to ask Lucy.'

The thought felt like betrayal. Like going behind his back. But the questions were eating her alive, and she had no other way to…

The door burst open.

Lucy stood in the doorway, already dressed in a sleek black dress that sparkled under the light. Her hair was done up, her makeup perfect, her smile bright.

"Erza! Get dressed! The others are already at the casino downstairs and it looks AMAZING!" She stopped. Her smile faded. "What's wrong?"

Erza's reflection stared back at her. Frozen. Caught.

"Erza?" Lucy stepped inside, closing the door behind her. "Talk to me."

The words came out before Erza could stop them.

"Natsu and I had sex last night."

Lucy froze.

The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy. Lucy's expression was unreadable, her eyes wide, her lips parted slightly.

"Last night..." Lucy's voice was careful. Measured. "I don't understand."

Erza looked away. "I don't want to lie to you. I know he and you are together, but…" Her voice cracked. "I couldn't stop it. I couldn't stop myself. It was like something took us both over and…"

"Erza."

Lucy's hand found hers. Warm. Steady.

"I know you knew about us," Lucy said quietly. "Natsu told me. He also told me he likes you too. He told me you know."

Erza's head snapped up. "You... knew?"

"From the beginning. From the village."

"And you're not... mad?"

"I was." Lucy's smile was sad, honest. "At first. But Natsu was honest with me from the start about you. I knew he was hiding something, he's always hiding something these days, but I also knew he was serious. About you. About me. About... whatever this is."

Erza stared at her.

"So you're alright if I... if I also became his..."

She couldn't finish.

Lucy squeezed her hand.

"Honestly?" A soft laugh. "I've been looking forward to talking with someone about Natsu. About everything that's been happening. And if you're alright with it..." She met Erza's eyes. "I'm good with it."

The tears came before Erza could stop them.

Lucy pulled her into a hug, fierce and warm, and Erza buried her face in her shoulder and let herself shake.

"It'll be fine, Erza." Lucy's voice was soft against her hair. "I've come to trust Natsu more than I ever thought I would. More than I've trusted anyone. If he says this can work, if WE say this can work, then it will."

They held each other in the quiet room until the tears passed.

When they finally separated, Erza wiped her eyes and managed something almost like a smile.

"You mentioned wanting to talk about Natsu," she said. "I think I have something to add to that."

Lucy's expression shifted. "What is it?"

Erza took a breath.

"Yesterday, Natsu had a headache. He came to my room to rest. Then suddenly..." She closed her eyes, the memory surfacing like a nightmare. "He started wailing. Kicking. Rolling in the bed like he was being torn apart from the inside. He was screaming at me, GET AWAY, over and over but he was in so much pain, I couldn't leave him."

Lucy's face had gone pale.

"Then a wave of black energy burst out of him. And after that..." Erza's voice dropped. "It was like I was a passenger in my own body. I couldn't control anything. Natsu was there but he wasn't, he was like a beast, full of... full of lust. We had sex over and over. I don't even remember how many times. Dozens, maybe."

She looked down at her hands.

"When I woke up this morning, he was already awake. Swearing. Angry at himself. Saying things like 'it wasn't supposed to happen like this' and 'first Lucy and now you.' Then he just... left."

She left out the part about Siegrain and Jellal. That was Natsu's secret to tell, not hers. Lucy had enough to carry.

Lucy was quiet for a long moment.

"Did you feel it?" she asked finally. "The magic? Did it feel like everything just... drained?"

Erza's eyes widened. "Yes. Exactly. Like I had no magic left at all. Like the air itself was empty."

Lucy nodded slowly. "It was the same with me. The first time. At the village after Galuna."

She began to pace, her mind racing.

"And during the fight with Gajeel," she continued, "something similar happened. Natsu partially transformed, scales, claws, everything and for a moment, all magic in the area just... stopped. Nullified."

Erza's breath caught. "You think this is connected?"

"I think Natsu didn't want this to happen. Either time." Lucy stopped pacing, her expression troubled. "I think he's been fighting against something. Something inside him."

'That explains the training,' Erza thought. 'The forest. The days away. He wasn't just getting stronger, he was trying to gain control.'

"And it explains the change," Lucy added quietly. "Since that first night, he's been different. Not just the old flame-brain idiot we knew. More serious. More focused. More... aware."

"He's been preparing," Erza realized. "For this. For whatever is coming."

They stood in silence, the weight of their shared realization pressing down on them.

"We have to talk to him," Lucy said finally. "Confront him about it. Find out what's really going on."

Erza nodded. "But not tonight. Tonight, we promised the others…"

"Tonight, we enjoy ourselves." Lucy managed a smile. "Tomorrow, we get answers."

Erza looked at her for a long moment. Then, slowly, she smiled back.

"Agreed."

She turned to the mirror. Silver light shimmered, and when it faded, her Heart Kreuz Armor was gone, replaced by something entirely different.

A dress. Rose-patterned, form-fitting, with a neckline that plunged in ways that would make most men forget their own names. Her hair, still soft from the shower, fell in elegant waves around her shoulders. The mark on her collarbone was visible now, a small, dark bruise against her fair skin.

She looked... stunning. Seductive. Classy and dangerous all at once.

Lucy's jaw dropped. "Erza. That dress. Where did you…"

"Requisitioned it years ago," Erza said smoothly, examining her reflection with a critical eye. "I believed it might prove useful for undercover operations requiring... distraction tactics."

"Distraction tactics." Lucy's voice was flat. "You mean seduction."

"I mean tactical infiltration." A ghost of a smile. "The principles are similar."

Lucy laughed, a real laugh, warm and surprised. "You're impossible."

"I prefer 'multifaceted.'"

They linked arms at the door, two women bound by secrets and tears and something that felt dangerously like hope.

"Ready?" Lucy asked.

Erza glanced back at the mirror one last time. At the woman in the rose dress with the bruise on her collarbone and the questions in her eyes.

'Tomorrow,' she promised herself. 'Tomorrow we get answers.'

"Ready," she said.

They walked out together, into the glittering lights of the casino, into the laughter and chaos of their family, into a night that demanded they forget, just for a few hours, the weight of what waited in the morning.

----

Beyond the window, pressed into the shadow of the adjacent balcony, Natsu Dragneel stood perfectly still.

The glass was thin. The night was quiet. He had come to check on them, to apologize again, to say something, anything that might make the morning less broken. Instead, he had found them talking. About him. About everything.

He heard Lucy's voice, steady and warm: "I've come to trust Natsu more than I ever thought I would."

He heard Erza's confession, the words he already knew but could not escape: "He was like a beast, full of lust."

He heard them piece it together. The black energy. The magic drain. The change in him since that first night with Lucy. The forest training. The fight against Gajeel.

They were close. So close to the truth. And they were still here. Still choosing him. Still holding each other and planning to confront him tomorrow with questions instead of accusations.

His hands gripped the balcony railing. The metal creaked softly under his fingers.

'They deserve better than this,' he thought. 'They deserve better than me.'

But they had chosen. And he would spend every remaining moment trying to be worthy of that choice.

He slipped away into the darkness before they reached the door.

Tomorrow, they would come with questions. Though tomorrow was not the next day, another terrifying and brutal arc was about to begin. One that would push him to his limits and test his supposed metal. He remembered that they were coming now. But before that, he had to win some jewels.

Next Chapter: TOWER OF HEAVEN arc begins.
