Chapter 6 - 6 Echoes of the Awakened

The first time he felt another one clearly, it nearly stopped his heart.

They were standing on the outer ridge above Halren.

Sunrise bleeding orange across the fields.

Mira was explaining something about trade routes.

He wasn't listening.

Because suddenly—

There.

Southwest.

A flare of Muna so violent it twisted the air.

Not corrupted like Carrion.

Not clean like Mira's.

Sharp.

Hungry.

Intentional.

[Awakened detected.]

[Distance: 42 leagues.]

[Resonance: Hostile alignment probability 63%.]

He sucked in a breath.

Mira stopped mid-sentence.

"You felt it."

"Yes."

She didn't ask what.

Just:

"Is it coming here?"

"I don't know."

The flare pulsed again.

Stronger.

And then—

It vanished.

Not faded.

Hidden.

Someone else had learned to close their channels completely.

"Kael," Mira said quietly.

"Yes."

"We need to leave Halren."

He didn't argue.

Because for the first time since arriving in this world—

He understood something clearly.

The monsters were not the greatest threat.

The System had not chosen one host.

It had seeded many.

And if even one of them learned to hoard Muna instead of resonate—

They wouldn't fight like Carrion.

They would conquer.
