Chapter 7 - Decree of Blood

The night did not recover after the Warden vanished.

It fractured.

Wolves remained on edge, their eyes flickering between Elena and the treeline as if expecting the land itself to split open again.

Elena stood at the center of the compound, silver still faintly shimmering in her irises.

She felt different.

Not stronger.

Wider.

As if her awareness had stretched beyond the walls of Adrian's territory.

She could still feel the perimeter.

But now—

She felt distance.

Empty lands.

Cold patches in the world where something had once lived.

Dead territories.

Adrian watched her closely.

"You're still connected," he said quietly.

She nodded slowly.

"It doesn't stop."

Kael stood a few paces away, arms crossed, studying her without trying to hide it.

"You won't be able to ignore it," he said.

Adrian shot him a warning look.

"You're still here."

Kael's mouth curved faintly.

"I'm curious."

"You're opportunistic," Adrian corrected.

Elena exhaled.

"Stop."

Both men went silent.

She turned to Adrian.

"You said that thing was called a Warden."

"Yes."

"And it said it feeds on abandoned bonds."

"Yes."

Her gaze hardened slightly.

"How many territories are abandoned?"

Silence.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Kael did.

"Too many."

The air grew heavy.

"After the Sovereigns were slaughtered," Kael continued calmly, "territories without pack anchors began to collapse. Some were absorbed. Some died."

"And some," Adrian added, "are fought over constantly."

Elena's pulse thudded.

"So the land suffers because of politics."

"That's one way to put it," Kael replied.

Before she could respond—

A deep horn echoed through the forest.

Low.

Resonant.

Not a wolf call.

A signal.

Adrian's head snapped toward the eastern ridge.

"That's Council metal."

Kael's expression shifted from amusement to alertness.

"That was fast."

Elena felt it before she saw them.

Three separate presences approaching the boundary.

Not stealthy.

Not aggressive.

Official.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"They don't send Elders twice in one night."

Kael murmured, "Unless they're not sending Elders."

The gates opened again.

This time, ten wolves entered.

All in human form.

Black cloaks bearing a silver crescent insignia.

Uniform.

Disciplined.

And behind them—

Marius.

His expression was no longer neutral.

It was resolved.

Adrian stepped forward.

"This territory is under my authority."

Marius stopped several paces away.

"Not in this matter."

Elena's pulse quickened.

"This is about me," she said flatly.

Marius looked directly at her.

"Yes."

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"I thought the Council preferred subtlety."

Marius ignored him.

"By order of the Lunar Council," he said evenly, "an awakened Sovereign constitutes a destabilizing force."

Elena folded her arms.

"I'm standing right here."

"Good," Marius replied calmly. "Then hear this clearly."

The wolves behind him straightened in unison.

"Effective immediately, the Sovereign known as Elena Moreau is to be placed under Council custody."

Silence detonated.

The pack behind Elena growled low.

Adrian's voice dropped into something lethal.

"She does not belong to you."

Marius met his gaze.

"She belongs to no one."

"Exactly."

Marius continued, unmoved.

"The last Sovereign awakening led to three decades of territorial collapse."

Elena's heart hammered.

"What happened?"

"They refused Council guidance," Marius replied.

Kael spoke lightly, "They refused Council control."

Marius didn't deny it.

"And the result?" Elena pressed.

"War."

The word echoed through the compound.

The wolves shifted uneasily.

Adrian's hand hovered near Elena's arm.

Not touching.

But close.

"She will not go with you," he said quietly.

Marius's gaze hardened.

"Then you defy the Council."

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

A collective inhale rippled through the compound.

Kael smiled faintly.

"Bold."

Marius's expression darkened slightly.

"You are Alpha of this territory."

"Yes."

"Then you understand the consequence."

Elena looked between them.

"What consequence?"

Marius didn't look at Adrian when he answered.

"Revocation."

The word hit like a blade.

Adrian's posture didn't change.

But something behind his eyes did.

The weight of it.

Kael's tone softened.

"They would strip you."

Marius nodded once.

"Effective immediately."

The wolves behind Adrian stiffened.

Shock.

Anger.

Fear.

Elena's chest tightened.

"You'd remove him because of me?"

Marius answered calmly.

"No."

A pause.

"Because of his choice."

The mate bond flared sharply.

Adrian stepped forward.

"She is under my protection."

Marius's voice sharpened.

"You were chosen to guard this land."

"Yes."

"Not surrender it to her."

The land pulsed beneath Elena's feet.

Not surrender.

Not ownership.

Recognition.

She stepped forward.

"Stop talking about me like I'm a weapon."

Marius's gaze flicked to her.

"You are."

She inhaled slowly.

"And what are you afraid I'll do?"

Marius held her stare.

"Bind what you should not."

Kael murmured, "Which means?"

Marius did not break eye contact.

"If she binds dead territories without Council structure, she could unify them."

Elena's breath hitched.

"Unify?"

"Create a network outside pack authority."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Independent."

"Yes," Marius said quietly.

"And that," he added, "cannot be allowed."

Silence.

Heavy.

Electric.

Elena felt it clearly now.

This wasn't about balance.

It was about control.

"You're not trying to protect the land," she said softly.

"You're trying to protect your hierarchy."

Marius didn't respond.

Which was answer enough.

Adrian stepped forward again.

"She stays."

Marius's voice grew colder.

"Then as of this moment, you are no longer recognized as Alpha by the Council."

Gasps rippled through the compound.

One of the cloaked wolves stepped forward and unfurled a thin strip of silver metal.

An insignia.

Council crest.

It glowed faintly.

Adrian's gaze did not waver.

"I never ruled because of you."

The cloaked wolves shifted subtly.

Not attacking.

But ready.

Elena's pulse spiked.

This was about to fracture.

Kael stepped sideways slightly.

Positioning himself not with Adrian.

Not with the Council.

With opportunity.

Elena felt the land tremble faintly.

Not violently.

Uncertain.

The territory did not want instability.

She exhaled slowly.

"Stop."

Every head turned toward her.

The silver in her eyes brightened.

"You want me?" she said calmly.

Marius didn't blink.

"Yes."

"Then I'll come."

Adrian turned sharply.

"No."

She didn't look at him.

"If I stay, you lose everything."

His voice dropped dangerously.

"I do not care."

Her breath caught.

For a split second—

She almost wavered.

The mate bond pulsed intensely.

But she felt something stronger.

The land.

"It's not about us," she said quietly.

Marius studied her.

"You will come willingly?"

"Yes."

Adrian stepped in front of her.

"You do not understand what that means."

"I understand enough."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"This is not a prison transfer."

Elena looked at him.

"I know."

She turned back to Marius.

"But I'm not surrendering."

Marius tilted his head slightly.

"Explain."

"I will walk into your custody," she said evenly.

"But I will not be bound."

The cloaked wolves shifted.

"That is not how this works," one of them muttered.

Elena's gaze sharpened.

The land pulsed.

Stronger.

"You do not bind Sovereigns."

The statement hung in the air.

Marius studied her carefully.

"And if we attempt to?"

Her silver eyes flashed.

"Try."

Silence.

Adrian's breathing grew heavier.

"You are walking into a cage."

She finally looked at him.

Softly.

"If I don't, they'll burn your territory next."

The truth of it lingered.

Kael spoke quietly.

"They will make an example of her."

Marius did not deny that.

Elena's pulse slowed deliberately.

She stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

The land did not resist.

It followed.

The cloaked wolves parted.

Adrian's hand closed around her wrist.

The mate bond surged violently.

"Do not go," he said quietly.

Her breath trembled slightly.

"I'll come back."

His jaw tightened.

"You don't promise what you cannot control."

She leaned closer.

Just slightly.

"I don't promise," she whispered.

"I decide."

And she pulled her wrist free.

The mate bond snapped tight.

Pain shot through both of them.

But she didn't stop walking.

Marius turned and began leading the procession out of the territory.

The cloaked wolves surrounded her.

Not aggressively.

But firmly.

Kael watched.

Amused.

Interested.

Calculating.

As Elena crossed the boundary—

She felt it.

The territory didn't let her go.

It stretched.

Like a thread refusing to break.

And far beyond the trees—

Something else responded.

Another territory.

Waking.
