Chapter 6 - Chapter Six: The Room That Listens

The Archive was colder than Kai expected.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The building rose at the center of Veyra like a blade pushed into the earth — smooth white walls, no visible windows, light reflecting without warmth.

People entering lowered their voices automatically.

Even laughter seemed inappropriate here.

Kai walked beside Serah through the main corridor, hands in his pockets, eyes quietly observing everything.

Security drones floated overhead without sound.

Walls displayed faint streams of data moving like slow rivers of light.

"Comforting place," he muttered. "Feels like being judged by architecture."

Serah ignored the comment.

"Stay close," she said.

"I wasn't planning a dramatic escape."

"That wasn't concern for you."

He smiled faintly.

Fair enough.

---

They stopped before a circular door.

No handle.

No visible lock.

Serah placed her palm against the surface.

Light spread outward beneath her hand.

ACCESS GRANTED

The door separated silently.

Inside waited a small room.

Empty except for two chairs and a suspended ring of pale light hovering above the floor.

Kai stepped inside slowly.

"This looks like the beginning of a bad decision."

"It's an observation chamber," Serah said.

"No mirrors?"

"The room itself observes."

He paused.

"…I liked mirrors better."

The door sealed behind them.

The hovering light activated.

Soft waves expanded outward, passing harmlessly through his body.

Kai felt warmth — familiar warmth — spread through his chest again.

The system reacted immediately.

A calm artificial voice filled the room.

> Anomaly detected.

Serah's eyes sharpened.

"Begin passive scan."

Light intensified slightly.

Kai shifted uncomfortably.

"What exactly is this doing?"

"Listening," she replied.

"To what?"

She hesitated.

"…Memory resonance."

He laughed once.

"That sounds fake."

The system interrupted.

> Resonance increasing.

The light flickered.

Serah frowned.

"That shouldn't happen during passive observation."

Kai felt pressure behind his eyes.

Not pain.

Recognition.

Images flashed briefly—

Lanterns falling upward.

An empty city skyline.

The fracture opening wider.

He grabbed the chair for balance.

"Okay," he muttered, "now it's definitely doing something."

The voice spoke again.

> Cross-reference initiated.

Data streamed rapidly around the room.

Then—

Every display froze.

Silence.

The system spoke one more time.

> Identity match… incomplete.

Serah stepped forward.

"Define incomplete."

Pause.

Then:

> Subject corresponds with restricted archival imprint.

Her breath caught slightly.

Restricted imprints were sealed beyond investigator clearance.

Kai straightened slowly.

"Should I be worried?"

"Yes," she said quietly.

Before she could continue—

All lights shut off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

For one second, nothing existed.

Then the fracture appeared above them.

Not outside.

Inside the chamber.

A projection — or something pretending to be one.

The crack widened slowly.

A presence pressed against reality.

Kai stared upward, unable to move.

The same voice from his dream echoed silently in his mind.

You are closer now.

The lights snapped back on.

The projection vanished.

The system rebooted instantly.

> Error. Scan terminated.

Serah turned sharply toward the console.

"What just happened?"

No response.

No record displayed.

As if the moment never occurred.

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…Please tell me that was normal."

Serah looked at him.

For the first time since meeting him—

She looked uncertain.

"The Archive," she said carefully, "does not hallucinate."

A notification appeared across the chamber wall.

SYSTEM PRIORITY UPDATE

NEXUS EVENT STATUS: ESCALATING

Serah read it silently.

Kai watched her expression change.

"That's bad, isn't it?"

She met his eyes.

"Yes."

Outside the Archive, alarms began to sound softly across the city — not panic alarms.

Preparation alarms.

Veyra was adjusting.

Something had officially begun.

---

High above, the fracture pulsed again.

Longer this time.

Almost like breathing.
