Chapter 8 - Smiling Prisoner

Sora's eyes had returned to complete darkness. The strange reflective surface that had filled them moments ago was gone, leaving only the hollow black void that had always unsettled those who looked into them. He stood beside the female knight as both of them stared toward the distant city where the awakening creature continued to rise. It was forming slowly before the market road, its enormous body reshaping itself as if the stones of the city were answering its call. Pieces of the road broke apart and drifted upward toward the growing mass while dust, shattered fragments of buildings, and even the faint glow of the surrounding light seemed to bend toward it.

Everything was being swallowed.

The creature absorbed the stones from the ground, the air around it, the light itself, and even the bodies of humans who had been caught too close to its forming shape. All of it disappeared into the expanding darkness that made up its body. From time to time the stone surface shifted, and when it did something inside could be seen moving beneath the rock. Flesh. Dark, wet flesh pulsed beneath the stone layers in slow waves like the beating of a gigantic heart trapped inside a prison of masonry.

Its glowing white eyes looked down upon the city. Slowly the pale light inside them began to tremble, and deep within that glow something darker started to form. Thin crimson lines appeared first, spreading through the white radiance until they shaped themselves into irises. Moments later, dark pupils followed. The eyes of the creature were becoming human.

Then suddenly an explosion erupted.

A violent bloom of fire burst upward from the place where the creature stood. A massive burning flower expanded into the sky, its flaming petals spreading across the fractured crystalline heavens like a sun made of fire. Sora watched silently as the flaming blossom rose higher and higher before fading.

Beside him the female knight spoke quietly, almost whispering to herself.

"So… they began."

She kept her gaze on the distant creature for a moment longer before turning toward Sora. "Kid, you saw everything that happened here, right?"

"Yes," Sora replied calmly. "There were two cre—"

She interrupted him immediately. "Not here."

Her eyes moved back toward the distant city as another distant explosion echoed across the night. "Follow me. We will talk somewhere safer."

Sora watched her carefully. Something about the situation felt strange. She had not asked many questions. She had not demanded an explanation. Instead, she seemed strangely eager to move him somewhere else, almost as if remaining here for even a little longer would cause trouble.

For a brief moment doubt appeared in his mind. But soon another thought followed it.

I must trust him.

Without another word Sora began following the female knight. Together they walked toward the towering iron wall that surrounded the city. The massive metal barrier rose high above them, its dark surface reflecting faint fragments of light from the fire on the banners.

When they reached it, the woman stepped forward without hesitation and drove her hand into the iron. The metal tore open beneath her fingers with a sharp grinding sound. She grabbed both sides of the split and forced them apart, widening the opening until there was enough space for a person to pass through.

Inside the wall was darkness.

Yet when Sora looked closer he noticed something unusual carved into the metal surface within. Countless rune arrays covered the interior of the wall. The symbols resembled the message rune the dead knight had carried earlier, but these were far more complex. Circles, intersecting lines, and layered characters stretched across the iron and even continued onto the cobblestone ground beyond it, forming a network designed to control and carry light itself.

"Kid," the female knight said, "step inside. Quickly."

Sora glanced once more toward the distant city. The enormous creature continued watching the flaming explosions that struck its body. Each burning flower shattered against its surface before disappearing into the darkness that made up its form.

Then Sora stepped through the opening.

For a brief moment the world became completely dark.

Then everything changed.

The iron wall behind him vanished, and the narrow space suddenly expanded into a vast chamber far larger than the thickness of the wall should have allowed. Tall ivory candles stood in long rows along the stone walls while gas lamps hung from iron brackets above, filling the chamber with warm golden light. Two stairways stood before him. One led upward into unseen halls above while the other descended downward into deeper darkness beneath the structure.

The architecture of the chamber was strangely refined. Smooth stone surfaces reflected the candlelight softly, and intricate carvings decorated the walls with patterns that resembled flowing streams of light.

Then Sora noticed something strange.

The candle flames were moving slowly, swaying in quiet motions that did not follow any wind. Their movements seemed deliberate, almost as if the flames themselves were observing the room.

"Follow me," the female knight said as she walked toward the stairway leading downward.

Their footsteps echoed softly as they descended the wooden stairs together. Step by step they moved deeper beneath the structure until another stairway appeared below. They continued downward once more until the wooden floor ended and the ground beneath them became cold cobblestone.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

The air here felt heavier and quieter. Dim gas lamps lit the stone corridor ahead while thick walls surrounded them from every direction. At the end of the passage stood a heavy iron door painted black.

The female knight stepped forward and pushed it open.

The moment the door moved, noise exploded from the corridor beyond.

Curses. Screams. Mad laughter.

The air carried the scent of damp stone and blood.

"Kid," the woman said calmly behind him, "walk in front of me. Here we will maintain your safety. Do not think we will harm you."

Sora found the statement slightly amusing. Compared to the life he had lived before, this place might actually be safer.

He began walking forward. Iron cells lined both sides of the corridor, each one holding prisoners. Some were human, some were barely recognizable as such. The moment they saw the red sun symbol on the knight's armor many of them began screaming.

Those who still possessed reason shouted words.

Those who had lost their minds screamed nonsense.

And those who had lost both simply hummed quietly to themselves.

The corridor stretched onward until they finally stopped before a single cell. The female knight unlocked the iron door and pulled it open.

"Go inside," she said. "You will remain here only for a short time. You will be alone. It is better for you."

Sora nodded and stepped into the cell.

Then he lifted his head.

Inside the small stone room, sitting quietly on the bed, was a boy dressed in yellow.

The boy looked directly at him.

And slowly—

He smiled.
