Chapter 2 - Chapter Two-Rules of the House

The morning sun had barely pierced the thick velvet drapes when Elena awoke, stiff from a night of tossing and turning. Her mind replayed every moment from last night—the cold precision in Alessandro's gaze, the weight of his presence, the way he made ownership feel like both a threat and a promise.

She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, the silk sheets whispering against her skin. Her feet touched the cold marble floor, and she shivered. The mansion was vast, silent, and imposing. It wasn't a home. It was a fortress.

A soft knock at the door startled her.

"Enter," she called, trying to sound calm.

The door opened a fraction, and a young guard stepped in, bowing his head. "Breakfast is served, Mrs. Moretti. The Don requested it be in the east wing dining hall."

Elena's stomach twisted. The way he phrased it—requested—reminded her she wasn't just a guest. She was part of his world now, whether she liked it or not.

"Thank you," she said, smoothing her gown.

As she walked through the ornate hallway, she noticed small details that marked the mansion as Alessandro's territory. Security cameras hidden behind paintings, guards stationed at every turn, silent and alert. Even the servants moved as though afraid to breathe too loudly.

In the dining hall, Alessandro waited. Not formally. Not sitting behind a desk. He leaned against the edge of the massive table, arms crossed, dark eyes scanning her with sharp precision. His presence filled the room. A predator in a room of prey.

"Sit," he said, his voice low but commanding.

Elena chose a chair opposite him. Every instinct screamed that she shouldn't, that he might punish her for even this small act of defiance. But she sat anyway, chin up, shoulders squared.

He didn't speak immediately. Instead, he watched her—like she was a puzzle to be solved, a challenge to conquer. Finally, he leaned forward, hands resting lightly on the table.

"You will follow the rules of this house," he said. "They are simple. Obey the guards. Obey the staff. Obey me. Disobey…" He let the word hang in the air. "And you will learn why fear is an effective teacher."

Elena's lips pressed into a thin line. "I don't intend to break the rules," she said evenly.

He smirked, a faint curve that didn't reach his eyes. "Good. You will survive longer than most."

The breakfast that followed was tense. Not a word was wasted. The servants hovered silently, glancing nervously at Alessandro whenever he moved. He didn't eat, merely observed her as she picked at her meal.

Then, the first test came.

One of the junior guards, a brash young man who clearly wanted to impress his superiors, stepped forward as she reached for her water. He placed a hand on her wrist. "Miss Rossi, allow me—"

The moment his fingers touched her skin, everything froze. Time slowed.

Alessandro's head turned, just slightly, but it was enough. His dark eyes locked on the guard, and Elena felt the air change. The room seemed smaller, tighter, like a trap closing in.

"You touched her," Alessandro said calmly.

The young guard swallowed, thinking maybe the Don would scold him. "I—she—"

Alessandro rose smoothly, deliberately, each step echoing in the dining hall like a drumbeat. He stopped directly behind the guard. The man's eyes darted nervously, now realizing this was no ordinary warning.

"Remove your hand," Alessandro said. Voice still calm. Controlled. Deadly.

The guard hesitated, lips trembling.

"Now."

And then… Alessandro's hand shot out. Not fast, not violent, but precise. The guard's wrist was twisted sharply; a sharp crack echoed. He dropped to his knees, clutching it, pain burning through him.

Elena's stomach churned, a mixture of fear and awe.

"You see?" Alessandro said softly, turning back to her. "No one touches what belongs to me. No one. Understand this, and you might survive your first week."

The guard didn't need to hear the rest. He scrambled out of the room, moaning, leaving the silence heavier than before.

Elena's eyes met Alessandro's, unblinking. "I understand," she said quietly. Not from fear—because fear had already made its presence known—but from recognition. He was lethal, and he meant every word.

He studied her a long moment, expression unreadable. Then, he stepped back, the tension easing slightly, but not fully.

"Good," he said. "Breakfast is over. We begin your orientation."

Orientation. Another word for rules, expectations, and the invisible cage she was trapped in.

First Lesson: Territory

Alessandro led her through the mansion, explaining every rule with meticulous detail. No room was private. Every exit monitored. No communication left unobserved. Even the gardens had guards hidden in plain sight.

"You will move like a shadow," he instructed. "Silent, deliberate. You will see, hear, and observe. You will know who belongs to me—and who doesn't. Anyone who poses a threat, anyone who touches you…" He didn't finish the sentence, but she didn't need him to.

She swallowed. His energy, the touch her and die presence, was suffocating.

By the end of the tour, she knew two things:

She was under constant watch.

She was his. In every way that mattered.

The First Encounter With Danger

Later that evening, as she practiced walking through the halls, a soft sound caught her attention. A shadow moved too quickly in the corner.

Before she could react, a hand reached for her shoulder.

"Not again," she muttered, spinning around.

And froze.

A man in a dark suit, unfamiliar, smiling too easily, stood before her.

"Hello, beautiful," he said. "I just wanted to—"

Before he could finish, Alessandro appeared.

Not rushing. Not shouting. Just there.

The man froze. Alessandro's gaze locked on him. The room seemed smaller. Time itself slowed.

"You touch her," Alessandro said softly.

The man's smile faltered. "I—I was just—"

Alessandro raised a hand. The next sound was a sharp crack. The man collapsed, clutching his arm. Pain burned across his body.

Elena's breath caught.

Alessandro turned to her. Eyes dark, controlled, lethal.

"You are mine. Everyone knows it now. Remember it."

By the end of the day, Elena realized the mansion wasn't her prison. It was Alessandro's world. And in his world, touching her without permission was not just dangerous—it was deadly.

She might not be ready to submit. She might fight every inch. But one thing was clear: surviving him—and his enemies—would be harder than anything she had ever imagined.

And somewhere deep in the shadows, she sensed that this was only the beginning.
