Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The bells of Myeong Cathedral rang across the bright spring sky of Seoul, clear and proud, as if the whole city had gathered to witness history.

Inside the grand hall, sunlight streamed through tall stained-glass windows, painting the marble floor in soft colors. White roses lined the aisle in thick clusters with silk ribbons hung from golden chairs. The scent of fresh flowers and perfume filled the air.

Every seat was taken. Business leaders, politicians, celebrities, and families dressed in their finest clothes whispered among themselves as cameras flashed with reporters waiting outside the cathedral gates, hoping for a glimpse of the most talked about wedding of the year.

At the end of the aisle stood Adrian Kingston.

He looked calm, but his fingers tightened slightly around the bouquet he held for his bride. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, sharp and clean against his broad shoulders. His dark hair was neatly styled, his expression steady, controlled.

Adrian Kingston was not just any groom. He was the heir to Kingston Global, one of the largest technology empires in Asia. Young, powerful, brilliant. A man the media called cold and untouchable.

But today, as he waited under the high ceiling of the cathedral, there was something softer in his eyes. The doors at the back slowly opened, a quiet gasp moved through the crowd like a soft wave.

Kate Vale stepped inside. She looked almost unreal in her white gown. The silk shimmered gently as she walked, hugging her figure before flowing down in delicate folds. A long veil trailed behind her like a line of morning mist as her father held her arm, but it was clear she was the steady one. Her chin was lifted, eyes were fixed on Adrian.

Kate Vale was known for her beauty, but those who truly knew her spoke of her kindness and sharp mind. She had built her own art foundation from nothing. She had refused to live only in someone else's shadow.

Today, she walked toward her future. Adrian's breath slowed when he saw her. For a moment, the powerful CEO disappeared, replaced by a man who looked simply in love. Then the music swore.

Step by step, Kate moved closer. The crowd watched in silence, caught in the magic of the moment.

When she finally reached him, Adrian extended his hand, and Kate placed her hand in his.

Her fingers were warm. "You look beautiful," he whispered, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

She smiled softly. "You look nervous."

A faint curve touched his lips. "Only a little."

The priest began to speak, his voice echoing gently against the stone walls. Words about love, trust, loyalty and how two lives become one.

Outside, the city buzzed with its usual life. Cars moved along wide roads, no one noticed the small window open in a tall building several streets away where a man is lying flat behind a dark rifle. From his hidden position across the skyline, the cathedral stood clear in his sight.

He adjusted the scope carefully. Inside the cathedral, Kate's voice trembled slightly as she began her vows.

"Adrian, from the first day we met, you challenged me. You saw me not as someone fragile, but as someone strong. You believed in me, I promise to stand beside you, not behind you, and to protect what we build together."

Her eyes shone with unshed tears, which moved Adrian to emotion. When it was his turn, his voice came out steady but still filled with emotion.

"Kate, you brought light into places I did not know were dark. You taught me patience, and how to trust. I promise to protect you, choose you every day, no matter what stands in our way."

A few guests quietly wiped their eyes. The priest smiled warmly. "If anyone objects to this union, speak now or forever hold your peace."

There was silence, soft and peaceful. The sniper inhaled slowly, and through the lens, Adrian's head was perfectly framed.

His finger rested on the trigger, inside, the priest continued. "By the power given to me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"

Adrian gently lifted Kate's veil, her heart pounded with joy. He leaned forward, at that exact second, the world shattered. A loud crack split the air! It was sharp and violent, so different from the soft music and gentle whispers.

For half a heartbeat, no one understood what had happened. Then Adrian's body jerked, as a small red bloom appeared against his white shirt under the suit jacket.

Kate's smile froze, and Adrian's eyes widened slightly, confusion flashing across his face making another echo roll through the cathedral as people screamed. Adrian's hand slipped from Kate's waist.

His body collapsed forward. Kate caught him instinctively, but he was heavy. Too heavy that they both fell to their knees. The bouquet hit the marble floor and bounced. Blood spread quickly across the white silk of Kate's dress, staining it deep red.

The guests erupted into chaos, some ducked beneath their seats. Others rushed toward the exits. Glass shattered as someone knocked over a tall flower stand, making the music stop abruptly.

"Call an ambulance!" someone shouted.

"Get down!"

Kate barely heard them. She held Adrian's face in her trembling hands, looking confused. "Adrian," she whispered urgently. "Adrian, look at me."

His eyes fluttered. His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but blood pooled under him, dark and shocking against the polished floor.

Kate pressed her hands against his chest, trying to stop the bleeding. Her white gloves turned crimson within seconds. "Stay with me," she begged, her voice breaking. "Please, don't leave me."

Around them, security guards rushed forward. Some dragged guests to safety, others scanned the upper windows through the shattered glass, and outside, sirens began to wail in the distance.

The sniper calmly pulled back from the rifle, he did not rush nor panic. He had taken the shot meant to kill. Inside the cathedral, Adrian's breathing grew shallow, and Kate leaned close, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"You promised," she whispered through sobs. "You promised to choose me every day." His fingers twitched faintly against her arm.

For a second, his gaze seemed to clear, he looked directly at her, then his body went limp.

"Adrian!" Her scream cut through the chaos louder than any gunshot.

Paramedics burst through the doors moments later, pushing through the crowd. They carefully lifted Adrian from Kate's arms and placed him on a stretcher.

Kate tried to follow, but someone held her back gently. "Miss, please, let them work."

Her veil had fallen away. Her perfect makeup was ruined by tears and her once flawless gown was soaked in blood. She watched as they carried him out of the cathedral.

Flashing lights painted the walls red and blue. Reporters outside began shouting for questions. Cameras clicked wildly, while security tried to force them back.

The wedding that had begun with music and joy now ended with sirens and screams. Kate stood alone in the center of the ruined aisle.

White roses were crushed under hurried feet, with silk ribbons lying torn. Her hands shook as she looked down at them because they were covered in Adrian's blood.

Just minutes ago, she had been a bride, but now she did not know what she was. Outside, the ambulance doors slammed shut. As it sped away, Adrian Kingston lay motionless inside, machines beeping around him.

In the tall building across the skyline, the window quietly closed. The city of Seoul continued to move, but for Kate Vale, time had stopped at the sound of that single shot. "I'm sorry, Adrian," she whisper.
