Chapter 3 - The First Rule of Our Marriage

I didn't sleep.

Every sound in the apartment felt unfamiliar, hostile even. The knock at the door from the previous night replayed in my head over and over, but when morning came, there was no sign of whoever had stood outside.

At exactly seven a.m., the door opened.

Damian walked in as if he owned the place.

Correction—he did.

"You're up," he said, glancing at me on the couch.

"I didn't know I was allowed to sleep," I replied coldly.

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Good. You'll need that attitude to survive."

He placed a folder on the table. "Rules."

I opened it. Pages. Too many pages.

"No love. No public defiance. You will appear at events when required. You will not contact your former boyfriend."

My chest tightened.

"And if I break a rule?" I asked.

His gaze hardened. "Then I stop protecting you."

That word—protecting—sent a chill down my spine.

"Who was at the door last night?" I asked quietly.

Damian paused.

Then he said, "Someone you don't want to meet again."

If Damian was protecting me… who was hunting me?
