Chapter 1 - chapter 1:The quiet girl and the green eyed smile

Emma Parker had perfected the art of blending into the background. Her days in Ridgewood High were predictable—she arrived just on time, carried her sketchbook everywhere like a talisman, and moved through hallways quietly, avoiding attention like it was a physical force. Friends were few but loyal, her world small and safe. Yet, all of that careful equilibrium shattered the moment she collided with Lucas Bennett outside the school library.

He was leaning against the brick wall, one hand tucked into his jeans pocket, green eyes sharp, yet easy, as if the world bent slightly in his presence. When Emma's books slipped from her arms, he bent down with a grace that seemed effortless and handed them back. "Careful," he said, his voice casual but carrying a warmth she wasn't expecting.

"I… thanks," Emma muttered, cheeks flaming, fumbling with her sketchbook.

"You're Emma, right?" Lucas asked, studying her as if he were trying to memorize every detail.

"Yes," she whispered.

"I'm Lucas," he said with a small grin. "And… I think your sketches are amazing. You have talent."

Emma blinked. Compliments weren't new, but the sincerity in his voice was disarming. For the first time, she felt noticed for something more than being quiet or average.

Over the next few weeks, Lucas became a quiet presence in her life. He appeared in the library when she was alone, joked with her in the cafeteria, offered to carry her art supplies. Each gesture was small but cumulative, building a delicate bridge between them. Her friends, Olivia and Noah, teased relentlessly, but Emma couldn't deny the thrill of anticipation that made her chest race every time Lucas entered her world.

One afternoon, as golden sunlight spilled across the oak tree behind the school, Lucas tossed a pebble into the river beside her. "You know," he said casually, "I've been watching you. You're different from everyone else."

Emma felt heat rise to her cheeks. "Different how?"

"You… see things," he replied. "You notice details, the little things, the things everyone else misses. It's kind of incredible."

She laughed nervously, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I guess I just… pay attention."

"No," he said gently, tilting his head. "You notice. And that's rare. That's… special."

Her heart raced. Every word, every glance, every subtle smile was electric. For the first time in her life, Emma Parker felt that maybe being seen wasn't frightening—it was exhilarating.
