Chapter 16 - Winter to Spring

A lone path made of dark grey stone hung suspended above the great abyss. Tendrils of shadows reaching up licking the stone, desperate for any opportunity to escape. The pillars of its cage rose high above the path. The great symbols of imprisonment lined each pillar with the Tue's light running through them, driving the shadows downwards.

The centre of the path widened into a circle with an opening in the centre. A god waited at the other side of the circle. He stood thirty feet tall and wore long robes of pale green, falling slack on his shoulders revealing his bare torso. New vines of pale green twisted around his arms and chest weaving in and out of his skin. Smaller branches sprouted from larger ones creating a cage around his body. A lantern hung from a branch above his head chasing away the heavy shadows around him.

Off in the distance the sound of winter chimed to heavy footsteps. A god of similar height emerged from the oppressive darkness. His shoulders adorned in thick layers of snow. Long icicles hung from his shoulders creating a constant chime as he walked. A long spear peeked out from behind his shoulder. In his hands he cradled something precious, swaddled in cloth like a newborn babe. He stops at the edge of the circle looking over to the man at the other side.

"Sereus." Said the god of winter.

"Tilous." Sereus replied. Their words echoed throughout the chamber.

They both began walking round the edge of the circle meeting in the middle. Tilous, the god of ice and snow lifted the swaddled sphere towards Sereus. The cage of vines pulled back and Sereus reached out to cradle the world. The cage rebuilt itself with the world safely tucked inside.

Sereus looked down through the vines at the world in his hands. "Brother, can you feel the abyss shifting?"

Tilous stopped and chimes rang out as the icicles knocked against one another. "Something is coming. The abyss shifts for the shadows anticipate his return."

Sereus nodded with a grim expression and started making his way back to the garden of Paeneya.

Tilous turned away and began his journey back to Ibaris.
